Spicetree Apartments

I currently live in these apartments. This place used to be ⁵⁄₅ before the new management came in. The new renovation projects are not only intrusive, but they give the management an excuse to double our rent. If you’re looking for a place to live, don’t come here.

I’m a grad student, and it works for me. It’s cheap, despite the price spike of ~50 $ each year. Some ants when it gets cold, but they have pest control free of charge two times a month. The windows are old as hell, and leak cold air in during the winter but you can buy window plastic saran wrap stuff for that. The water pipes are a bit loud, but I’m used to them now. Kids play outside and are loud, but I don’t care really because I just turn the TV up or I’m at school a lot. I don’t expect luxury, so it’s fine for me. Love my patio so I can grill. Great location near the theater, meijer, target, Kroger, all the crap on Washtenaw, close to Ypsilanti for Sidetrack and Red Rock. I love that the office holds your packages if you get a delivery, this is a major plus for me. Overall ³⁄₅ because my ⁵⁄₅ would be a house, new windows, a yard, a dog, a jacuzzi, a jam room, a pool table, and large kitchen. Just saying. I know what I’m getting but I also know what a ⁵⁄₅ is!

I have lived in Spice Tree Apartments for 20 years so far. Today all the tenants found out a new corporation has bought Spice Tree Properties. When our leases run out, we may experience a 300.00 rent hike for the renovated apartments. New leasers will pay it. What upsets me the most is we have to double pay the AUW water bill (Nov and Dec) and will get a refund from the previous corporation since it is obvious the corporation bought it a few months ago. I will have to move. I do give five stars to the management, office and maintenance staff that has given friendly, personable and efficient customer service.

I just moved out of these apartments and I feel so-​so about them. The price was good when we subleased the first month for $ 640 a month later it increased to $ 690. I’m not sure when but they changed it before the year was over to $ 710. As far as maintenance goes they were really fast and effecient. Over the year I had a leaky bathroom faucet, broke the handle off the refridgerator, had a garbage disposal clog, and a huge bed bug problem. There are other problems with earwigs coming in through the not well sealed windows. Honestly I thought they might be cursed at that point. I just thought it be best to start off fresh somewhere else. Even though they fixed all the problems we had… having bed bugs was a living itchy hell. I wish I would’ve complained about the kitchen cabinets doors not shutting cause they weren’t aligned or that the egg shelf in the fridge freezes your eggs, which we found out the first week. Ha ha All in all the apartment was huge and had walk-​in closets. The two pools sold me. The kids are really noisy all day in the courtyard and that was one of the reasons I didn’t want to stay. Also only a few have patios and one never opened up for us to have. With as many neighbors we had not many actually said hi and still to this day in a year I met 5 of them. Thats including the previous tenant.

I have lived here for a few months and I will say they led us on a lot to get us to sign. We were told they paid for water and that because we were signing a lease almost a year in advance we would be getting a patio. When we showed up to move in, we were told water would range anywhere from $ 50 – 70 a month and that they did not cover it and that we did not get a patio.
There are pubic yes, pubic hairs painted into the wall and painted into our bathroom drawers. We complained and they did repaint and take care of that.
There is a lot of bugs, spiders and ear wigs mainly. But, we are on a bottom unit so maybe that plays a factor.
It’s a bit scary at night walking to your car, the parking lot isn’t well lit and we are always getting notices of people stealing and messing with cars in the lot.
I’m not sure yet if we will be signing a new lease, they are big for the price.

I moved into Spice Tree Apartments roughly a year ago and have re-​signed my lease last month because I don’t have the time to move or find a place. I also wasn’t at my breaking point a month ago… I am now. The apartment company raised my rent after the first year 40 $. This might not seem like a lot but my and my boyfriend work and go to school full time. It’s a lot extra right now for us. When I had called the office the week before they raised my rent they estimated it would go up 20 $. A week later a differently lady (I didn’t get names) tells me that they raised most people 20 $ but me 40 $ because we signed so early. So I got penalized by committing early and thinking ahead. When I explained that this makes our budgets way tighter the women said, «listen, I have a line of people out the door who will be paying way more than you for that apartment. So be my guest and try to find something cheaper but I’ll fill your apartment in no time.» Rude right?! I pay my rent every month, in full, on time. I keep my apartment clean and nice and I care about it because it is My boyfriend and my first «home». I didn’t complain when they LOST a $ 100 package of mine because they handed it off to some other tenant and basically just said file a claim and hope it surfaces, I didn’t complain when they inexplicably raised my rent MORE than the others, I didn’t complain when the maintenance company «fixed» my leaky sink and it leaked the next day, I didn’t complain when I put THREE maintenance calls in to have my AC fixed (that hasn’t worked since day one) and they never showed up. But I’m complaining now. I worked hard all day and come home at 6:30 (after business hours of course) to see that all of the stuff that was in my bathroom is in my living room and there is a giant hole in my bathroom wall!!! The best part is there is no note on the door, no note on my counter, no note in my mailbox, and not one attempted call on my cell. After having to go out of my way to contact SOMEONE who can tell me what the hell is going on, I found out that I will have this monstrosity in my wall… until Tuesday. So yeah, basically in the words of that women who took my first call, I will be looking elsewhere for an apartment. DONT SIGN HERE!!!

I was happy to find an apartment in the area that was finally priced appropriately for what it was: decently sized, clean, in a safe and convenient location near the bus. I must mention, however, that the office is managed by people who seem not at all interested in their residents. They gave me a hard time about arranging a lease takeover (as if I had invented the term «prorate»!) and months later I’m being contacted by a collection agency about my final water bill… WHY didn’t the office – which has ALL of my contact information – just get a hold of me to pay it to begin with?! If you don’t mind the not-​terribly-​helpful/​informed office staff, the place isn’t bad.

Everyone I knew stayed at Spice Tree Apartments… and when I say everybody, I mean everybody. This is a popular rental property for college students at Eastern Michigan and also University of Michigan. Although I never stayed here, I was basically here most days of the week hanging with my friends. Plus I worked next door, so I would always try to get free dinner from a friend who was cooking. The size is adequate for two people. We had sleepovers all the time and could easily squeeze seven girls in the living room area. The prices are reasonable and most importantly, if all your friends stay here… you can save on miles.
