History

Established in 1905.

In the early 1900s, Andrew Carnegie donated $ 50,000 to build Anderson Public Library at the corner of Tenth and Jackson streets. The city’s only Neo-​classical structure (completed in 1905) includes extraordinary craftsmanship such as oak fireplaces, a stained glass rotunda, classic columns, marble stairway, and special lighting.

In the late 1980s, the Library Board of Trustees recognized the need for more space and for anticipated growth of services, so they selected a Sears & Roebuck building (former site of the Main Street School) with 95,000 square feet at 12th Street and Central Avenue. Following extensive renovation, the building opened in 1987. APL serves hundreds of people each day and offers more than a quarter of a million resources.

Just moving to the area it was a delight to finally get to the library. Nice space and seemingly a good collection. The staff was friendly, and the meeting room I visited was quite spacious. The bad news is that we live out of the city limits so have to pay to get access, but something we’re glad to do to get access!

The Anderson library is very large and clean. Their selection is quite good, and you can request books on their website. I requested five books online and had them within three days.

Oh good oh Anderson Public Library. I spent many days here as a child and teenage kid. I really like the wide variety of books they have. I’ve always been able to find what I’m looking for or obtain the book I want. It’s always been on of my favorite spots in Anderson. Kids should learn to appreciate things like the APL and make good use out of it.

What a great library! The internet is free, compared to $ 3 per day in Pendleton, and the librarians were super helpful and friendly. In less than 15 minutes I had logged onto my ebay account, printed out packing slips and shipping labels for 4 or 5 small items I’ve sold on my trip, and was done with that. When I asked questions about the Indiana History Room and the Madison County Historical Society they were most helpful in giving me the info I would need to go straight to them the next time I come in. No problems. I didn’t feel like I was inconveniencing anyone, but rather that they were glad to help. Because of that I could not only get things done faster, but found out what I needed to need less help next time. Bravo, Anderson Librarians!
Update: On later trips to Indiana I’ve spent many hours in here researching family genealogy, tracing both sides of my family back five generations. The librarians in the genealogy room have been extremely helpful and informative. Since you can access
on their computers you can really accomplish a lot in a short time, not to mention researching census records, cemetery records, old newspapers and more. I look forward to coming back.
