The food here was pretty good! I went here on a whim after reading some reviews. Hindsight, I wish I went with medium spiciness instead of mild. The service was okay. The cook brought out the food. There were no windows in the place. Overall it was a 4⁄5. Will go back.

Do not order anything above«mild». We do spicy food all the time in Los Angeles, but when the waitress said are you sure you want«medium» spice? We figured we can handle it. Soon we were dying trying to eat our food. Our lips were burning, and our faces turned red. It was getting uncomfortable. I had to order another dish just so I could have something to eat. Meanwhile my husband continued to eat the extremely hot food. We can only blame ourselves as we were warned about the spice. Overall, the food I could taste was ok. Not bad for Thai food in the wilderness.

The food here is beyond delicious! It’s spicy, so be careful about ordering anything beyond mild plus(spicy medium in other restaurants). Flavorful dishes, especially the Tom Kha and Bitter Melon soups. The only dish that I didn’t love is the Pad Thai, as the sauce was too sweet for me. This place is a regular for me. Parking tip: they only have 3 free spaces, so arrive early if you don’t want to pay to park.

I’ve eaten here several times and every time it’s been delightful! The food is always delicious and the service is wonderful. They are always very accommodating too!!! Kinda hidden in the downtown area, but maybe that’s a food thing. It is conveniently located across the street from the Captain Cook’s Hotel. They also have a small sushi menu too there, so you can get more than just Thai food.

This place is a little whole in the wall with a nice atmosphere. The service was great and delicious pad thai. My thai coffee was so delicious. We don’t have anything negative to say about this place.

Wonderful Thai food! Spiced how you like or can handle. Customer service is great, not quick but worth the wait.

There isn’t anything really terrible about this place, because the food is quite good and moderately spicy compared to other Thai places downtown. However, I got to have dinner with a child of one of the workers who spent most of his time yelling into a computer with the friends he was playing online with. I was treated to KGOT radio, two different waitresses, virtually no windows, and just in all… a mediocre experience. It seems like the experienced people call in for pick up.

It was extremely busy for lunch on a weekday and they only had 2 women running around serving everyone. I could tell they were overwhelmed. Because of that, the service was pretty slow. Took awhile to take my order and get my food but when it finally came I was glad I waited. The Tom Yum soup with chicken was piping hot and had the perfect amount of sweet and sour and spice. Then the chicken pad pek was delicious, with just enough heat for my mouth to handle. Plenty of food for the price you pay.

I asked a dude from out of state if he knew any Thai places in Anchorage that were spicy by lower 48 standards. He immediately said Bangkok Café. I checked the Unilocal reviews and saw people affirming that indeed this place was actually spicy. Long drive from work, but I have to try it. I ordered the beef pad thai very hot. The waitress warned me that the food here was actually hot, unlike other Alaskan Thai joints. I reiterated my desire for the cook to burn my face off, she said ok, while shaking her head. The food arrives. OK, read this next part in the voice of Morgan Freeman. «I wish I could tell you that the pad thai fought the good fight, and caused me moderate discomfort and later gastrointestinal distress. I wish I could tell you that — but Anchorage is no fairy-tale world. The waitress said it would be hot, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile — Anchorage life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, the pad thai would show up with fresh peppers and lime. The Unilocaler kept at it — sometimes he was able to get decent noodles and sprouts, sometimes not. And that’s how it went for the Unilocaler — that was his routine. I do believe those first two months were the worst for him, and I also believe that if things had gone on that way, this place would have got the best of him.» Alright, bottom line the spice level was 3⁄5 lower 48, and that may be a bit generous. I didn’t finish the plate, and when I got up to pay the waitress was smiling. She asked, «Too spicy?» I simply replied with a «nope.» I didn’t have the heart to tell her that in addition to not being spicy enough, it wasn’t very good. The noodles were super over done and were sticking together. The beef was weird, like tiny flakes of greasy beef, gray in color. The quest continues, starting to think Thai Village might become the winner and I’ll just have to douse the food in ridiculous amounts of the pepper sauce.

Don’t let the somewhat drab exterior or tucked away location fool you. This place just across the street from Hotel Captain Cook serves up some excellent Thai food. I got Tom Yum soup and a tofu curry and they were both very tasty. Some places steer away from a lot of heat even if you ask for it, but not Bangkok Café. I asked for the dishes to be spicy and they delivered. Friendly and timely service. Great, inexpensive food. Next time I’m in Anchorage I’ll be coming back for another curry.

We were pleasantly surprised by dinner here recently while on a cruise package tour. The surroundings are humble but the service was very friendly, and they were extremely accommodating of my family’s preferences, including the vegetarian kid, the one who wants peanut sauce on everything, and the guy who loves super spicy food. The spicing is pretty serious here, so ask for mild if you’re not sure you’re up for it. My husband had the Gai Gang & it was good, and we especially loved a «salad» with ground pork & peanuts; I don’t recall the name. I thought my kids’ pad Thais were too sweet and kind of oily, but the kids were happy. We had a good order of tofu fresh rolls, too. We are from a big city and eat a lot of Thai food. This isn’t the best, but it was a good traveler option and I’ve certainly had a lot worse.

Hot and convenient. That’s how I’d describe Bangkok. Hot: because this is the hottest Thai food I’ve had in Anchorage, BYFAR. That’s a compliment. If my forehead is not sweatin’, I’m feeling underappreciated. I don’t like to be worked by curry and then put away dry. Convenient: because it’s downtown(near where I live) and rarely crowded. It’s close to home and I can count on their not being a wait. There’s not a wait because the place is kind of hidden. It’s right under your nose! You’ve likely been near it, and not even noticed. It’s near the Captain Cook, right behind the Brown Jug. If you’re downtown, the mood for some Thai, but not in the mood to deal with tourist riff-raff, this is an excellent choice.

Meh. I had Pad Thai and I think they cooked it in sweet and sour sauce. The shrimp were way over cooked. Definitely not the place to go if you’re looking for authentic Thai.

First time to Anchorage and Bangkok Thai. Was impressed! Super vegetarian friendly! I ordered the tofu pad-see-ew and it did not disappoint. It was a little on the oily side, but hey isn’t that the point of noodle dishes? The tofu fresh rolls were okay but not much to them. I ordered Togo and my service was prompt and friendly. I recommend especially if you are staying at the Captain Cook it’s right across the street!

I work smack dab next to Bangkok café and probably go here 3 – 4 times a month. When they first opened, there were some definite kinks being worked out. Based on insane convenience, I stayed committed to them. The food has very much improved and I hope to see this place thrive and stick around(something tells me it will). Takeout is very popular here and the orders are never late. If you like your Thai food painfully hot, this is the place for you. Expect to be hurting into the next day. The curry is rich and flavorful and can definitely stretch into two meals(which my budget friendly pocketbook adores). Stir fry meals hit the spot with ample vegetables and protein. The pad thai is more on the vinegary side with perfectly cooked rice noodles — I think it’s the best in town, hands down. They also make a fantastic phở, with carefully packaged sides including three different hot sauces(one house made), caramelized garlic, fish sauce and a hefty amount of fresh cilantro and basil. Zero complaints on the food. The only thing I wish is that it was a touch cheaper, but they do have punch cards and as mentioned above, meals that can stretch into two… service is very friendly, though this could be because I make a near weekly pilgrimage.

Did ownership change? Because nothing taste right. Flavors are not authentic. Ordered pad thai and basil chicken. The pad thai was ok, they were very generous with the extra peanuts on the side though. I’ve been here before in the past and I’ve really liked the food. But there’s an obvious change in ownership and in their cook because this isn’t thai food.

PRETTYGOODJOINT It’s about 3 ½ stars actually, but I knocked it down because of the terrible Spicy California Roll. It was a truly miserable effort, rendering it difficult to ingest. However, we also had the Spring Rolls, the Larb and the Gang Gai and all were delicious. This is a nice little lunch spot, just across the street from the Captain Cook Hotel. The ambiance is pleasant enough, if Spartan.

The Bangkok Café, located right across the street from the Hotel Captain Cook is under new management – and it is far better than it used to be. The kitchen is sparkling clean and the staff is very accomodating. Ambiance is comforting and homey. I ordered the #8 Pad King lunch special and it was tasty. The Tom Yum was good too. However, I can not reccomend the N4, the Pad See Iew. Just a beige, bland, gelatinous mess. Regardless, I will take my chances eating at the Bangkok Café over the Captain Cook, anyday.
