History
Established in 1967.
Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Winton is nestled both physically and historically in central Virginia. The recorded history of the property dates back to a land grant in the early 1700s. Notably, Patrick Henry’s mother, Sarah Winston Syme Henry, lived at Winton and is buried in the cemetery on the grounds. Her legacy is preserved in her former home, the Sarah Henry Manor, which now hosts elegant events throughout the year and is on the list of National Historical Places.
Today’s Winton Country Club is the result of a bequest of Mr. Keene C. Brown. He gave the property to the County of Amherst under the condition that the property be leased to a corporation and operated as a membership club. Winton Country Club was incorporated in 1967 and continues to operate under a long-term lease from Amherst County. Throughout the property, Winton offers an 18-hole golf course, a junior Olympic swimming pool, an on-site restaurant and a historic banquet facility.
