What a great use for an old train depot. My family and I went here on Small Business Saturday and they were giving away cookies to children and letting them decorate the cookies. The ordering setup is a little confusing, but everything is fresh and tasty. They even have a great gourmet peanut butter and jelly sandwich. My veggie sandwich was phenomenal and the pasta salad was flavorful and a little spicy. The veggie hero contained the following ingredients: cheddar and havarti cheeses, lettuce, tomato, onions, cucumbers, olives, pesto and mayonnaise served on multi-grain bread. I even had a cookie on the way out and it was fresh and tasty.

I haven’t been to visit Depot Deli yet, but I have had their catering and was thrilled with the sandwich selection. My favorite was the Jive Turkey, topped with rhubarb apricot jam(!!!). The bread was perfect and everything on the sandwich fresh and delicious. I will definitely be visiting Depot Deli soon and frequently!

What a wonderful deli to have in Ames. Especially downtown! The curry chicken sandwich on multigrain bread was absolutely wonderful!!! I also had the cheddar apple soup which was perfect on a cool fall day. Both were unique items that I don’t find at every other restaurant. The salads looked great also, I just didn’t have room to try them. Everything is homemade which I love! Atmosphere was great. I took mine to go but wish I had time to stay. I will definitely be back!

Great sandwiches and soups. The place is always very clean, they have fast free wifi, and they usually have good music playing. Prices are reasonable — I paid $ 9 for a combo that included a half sandwich, a bowl of soup, and a fountain drink. Ames really needed a place like this that’s open through dinner, as Panera is over-priced, usually messy, and their wifi doesn’t work. Great to have such a nice local option.

Ames desperately needed a good deli with good bread and homemade sides. There is no other deli in town that compares. I’ve had sandwiches here twice. The quality of their food is top notch. The other deli in town has 4.5 stars which is sort of ridiculous to me but I’m a foodie who likes quality food and quality ingredients. There is no reason this place should rank below the other deli besides cost. But with cheap food comes cheap ingredients.

We visited Depot Deli on a Thursday with another family and two toddlers. My husband and I each got the lunch special, a half sandwich side and drink. I had the Italian hero with Greek pasta salad. My husband had the pig with wings and potato salad. I also ordered a cup of soup and two pickles. I did not see a kids menu so I ask what they offer for children. They offered a PB&J or grilled cheese. Our sandwiches were good. They had a nice amount of meat and great flavor. The Greek pasta salad was good also but the potato salad was extremely bland, white in color and lacked flavor. What was really disappointing was my cold soup and my daughter’s meal. We ended up ordering her a grilled cheese with fruit. Due to not having children’s options we ended up paying full price for her meal. It cost our family $ 32.00 to eat lunch at the Depot Deli and my husband and I got HALF sandwiches. I was really disappointed in that. Not a good place to take kids!

I ate at the Depot Deli twice in their first week of business. Both visits were great. The Jive Turkey sandwich might be a new personal favorite(I’ve had it twice now…). The staff is cheerful and quick to help. The food is fresh and delicious, though a little pricier than expected. The outdoor seating on the depot’s covered patio is fantastic. The Depot Deli looks like a solid addition to Ames’ list of great local restaurants!
