This place is not there anymore. There is no Chaun Yu Noodle Town. I just tried to eat there. I didn’t try the replacement restaurant because I wanted NOODLES.

I found out about this place by accident – just saw it mentioned on a couple of bulletin boards and wanted to try their dan dan mian. So I really had no expectations. But the food was so exciting to me that I actually signed up for Unilocal just to write a review. There are a few unique dishes here – like the spicy jellied mung bean salad – but to my mouth, that’s not what makes this place so good. I can’t remember the last time I had food in the SGV with such an amazing mix and balance of flavors. Really, it seems like the the owner really does taste what he’s cooking, and he must have a great palate. Everything we had here was just fantastic. For me, it’s the kind of excitement that makes you want to pound the table, slap yoursefl in the face about 10 times and start planning your next trip back. And yes, I’m going back next week, as soon as I finish the giant mountain of leftovers I brought home from lunch. Spicy, sour, salty, chewy, crispy, tart, savory, sweet – all of it at the same time. The greens and cilantro added were fresh and perfect and delicious. Jesus this place is good. Be forewarned: it’s not the cleanest place around. At least the dining room isn’t – the kitchen looked immaculate from what I could see, but the tables were sticky, the menus were filthy, and… you get the picture. I know some people freak out about that – I could give a crap as long as the food is good and fresh and seems properly prepared. I had a friend with me who can speak Chinese. You’ll muddle through without a Chinese speaker, but the menu is terribly vague and the descriptions aren’t very accurate. You’ll suffer a bit if you’re an English speaker. It’s worth making the effort though. I can’t wait to go back to this place.

I felt like being adventurous today and stepping outside of my comfort zone, so I decided to wear my Birkenstocks today WITHOUT any socks! But that has nothing to do with this review, so I’ll talk about my second adventure. My life partner kept bugging me to find some place to eat, so I sought out the sage advice of Unilocal. It led me to some«real deal» Sichuan food. I can’t vouch that statement because I’ve never had any at all. I didn’t even know what I’d be ordering, but I was still dizown with the crown though. They don’t call me dangerous for nothing! I googled the directions, but I still ended up passing the location. It’s a tiny establishment with seating for about ten. There was no wait when we got there(late Sunday night) and our food came out pretty quickly. There was one small snafu though: Our waitress didn’t speak a lick of English. There was a lot of pointing at pictures and praying that I would get what I ordered. Food came out: –Sweet Sour Spicy Yam Stick Noodles It largely consists of glass noodles, chili oil(like half the soup base), and some type of ground meat. If you dab oil with a napkin from your pizza, you’re gonna freak out. There’s a lot of oil. It’s a little sour and a little spicy. Didn’t taste the sweet nor could I figure where the«yam sticks» came in. It tasted alright and I’m not a pizza-dabber by any means, but even I felt out of control eating the stuff(although I did finish it). It’s still a steal at under $ 4, but it might be healthier to eat four Jumbo Jacks instead. –Pork belly with Sticky Rice Looks like slabs of uncut bacon on squash. Once again, if you’re the type to cut out all the fat from your steak, and maybe even neurotic enough to cut it out of your bacon, you’re gonna freak out. Lots of fat, but like bacon, it’s meant to be consumed. Taste was fine, but nothing extraordinary. –Steamed Juicy Dumplings It’s the XLB. Tastes bland and has a slight chemically aftertaste. I didn’t really enjoy it, but I liked that we got 12 for less than what you’d normally pay for 10. Don’t get me wrong, I did eat them all. So what’s the takeaway here? 1. Lots of oil. 2. Lots of fat. 3. Waitress no habla ingles. 4. Waitress is still very friendly and nice. 5. Cheap! As I write this review, I’m still buzzing from the MSG and I have chest pains. On the brightside, at least my stomach is full, right?!?

I found this place on Unilocal and went with my girl friend this Saturday for lunch. Around noon, no waiting at all. However, parking is limited, only street parking available. We tried #2 and #3, the portion is big, flavor is fine, but you can taste MSG. As other ppl said, noodle is chewy and nice. I probably will go back and try other dishes

I usually take my time writing reviews about places but my friend, who does not have a Unilocal account T_T, has told me that I *NEED* to write that this place has the BEST noodles in LA. Yesterday, it was possibly one of the best. And today, after eating the leftovers… THE best in LA… haha. Honestly, I thought it was okay. The noodles were nice and chewy when they first came out but as it sat in the broth, it cooked more and became soft and soggy. I LOVE carbs and let me just say, I would devour those noodles cold, warm or hot(but not hot enough to burn myself ;P). This is what I’ve tried from them and in order of what I liked the most. –Sweet Sour Spicy Yam Stick Noodles: I have been informed that things were lost in translation and that these are not made out of yam but they’re GOOD regardless =d These noodles are chewy, slippery and just very satisfying. This dish comes hot and with lots of chili oil. I’m not sure what is in it but it seems like there’s green onions, ground pork, crushed peanuts and satay sauce(???). For $ 3.50, you can afford to at LEAST try this dish once. BTW, portion is HUGE on this dish, it’s the same size as their beef noodle. –Beef Noodle: Handmade noodles in a sweet-ish beef broth, topped with pieces of beef(with or without gristle, if you ask) and some greens. Depending on how spicy you want this dish, you can ask them for less or more chili oil to be put in it. I don’t think the noodle I ate that night with Karen and Mara had much chili oil in it, if it had any at all. –Spicy Sour Stick: These had a texture like that of almond jello but a little bit firmer. These were pretty good but probably an acquired taste. –Pork belly with Sticky Rice: The lady said this was their specialty… I don’t see it. It was okay but it wasn’t a WOW for me. It was interesting but I probably wouldn’t order this again, there’s wayyyy too many other things for me to try =d –Chicken Noodle: Bland broth, overcooked chicken, no.

Seems to be the real deal for Sichuan, inexpensive too! The place has been open for 4 months already. Def. hole in the wall, not recommended for large groups. Each tables sits 2 – 4 people, 6 tables total… the one we sat at was a mini-folding table! The host was gracious and still served us considering we arrived 10 minutes after their posted closing time of 8pm. A bit of an indecision to start out with, but the pictures bordering the top of all the walls helped greatly. These pictures are also useful if you don’t speak Mandarin, or can’t read Chinese because you can still point at a picture and order dumbly. Luckily Mara C. speaks and understands Mandarin, so she was able to converse with our waitress. Tea was a tepid and flavorless… but that was probably because we came at closing time… Steam Pork Belly with Ground Sticky Rice– $ 6.95. I try to avoid dishes like these… pork belly with a layer of fat a centimeter or two thick! The ground sticky rice was not whole grains of rice but more of a coating of cooked rice paste which absorbed the meaty-sauce and gave it a hint of rice flavor. Meaty flavor and not bad if you aren’t health conscious. Sichuan Goulash Soup Noodles– $ 5.95. Yum, bits of beef mixed in a spicy soup base with noodles which seemed ramen-like. I thought it wasn’t too spicy considering the layer of chill oil floating in the bowl, but Mara C. couldn’t eat it! Steamed Juicy Dumplings– $ 5.95. Standard«Tong-bao» made with pork, yes it’s juicy! Take care when picking these up with your chopsticks, you don’t want to puncture the dumpling and have all the goodness leak out before it gets to your mouth! Chongquing Sour and Spicy Yam Stick– $ 3.50. The best value meal out of all the ones we ordered. The noodles were chewy and a bit more slippery than regular noodles. I would order this dish again the next time I go! This place also has frozen wontons(50/bag) and pork buns(48/bag) for $ 11.95. Convenient for stocking up at home and quick to cook!

For a while now, mom had been telling me that this place’s got some pretty tasty noodles. So finally she took me here over the weekend for an early supper. The place is tiny and I recall coming here years ago when it was Dai Ho to get their cold noodles for lunch. The place is still small but the atmosphere is kind of homey. When the Dai Ho man used to operate his restaurant here, you’d have to eat and go… no reading newspaper or relax with friends, and definitely no chit-chatting or he will yell at you. He had a line waiting at lunch hour! So, it was nice to be able to sit and eat at our own pace here. We ordered #2 Chongqing Dandan Dry Noodles, #5 Sichuan Goulash Soup Noodles w/beef and #4 Hot Sauce Cross Bridge Wonton(pork). Some funny names… Basically #2 is Dry noodles with ground pork. #4 is just Spicy beef noodle soup, and #4 is Wontons in Spicy sauce~ although their version is not with wontons sitting in chili oil like some other Sichuan style restaurants. I really liked #2~ the dry noodles. It was really tasty as mom said, but really salty and a bit spicy. I assumed it’s the large quantity of MSG they use. But it was yummy! It came with a small bowl of soup which had little flavor… so I guess, that was to balance out the flavors. Everything else we ordered was not all that special. The wontons were very peppery! I don’t know if the cook(the owner) sprinkled too much white pepper into the bowl or what, but there were so much pepper floating in the bowl. It was ok, not great. My least favorite was the beef noodle soup. It had only 3 pieces of beef in it, though they were very tender. The noodles had this lingering Chinese sweet wine taste to it which was not appetizing. Then we found out from the owner it was from the chopped up pickles they threw in the bowl which had that strong Chinese liquor taste. They pickled the veggies in that kind of Chinese liquor marinade, which I hate! I really did not enjoy that one. The complimentary Sichuan Vegetable Pickles had the exact same flavor. By the way, they throw peanuts into almost all their noodle dishes. Chopped and whole. I’m okay with the chopped, but the whole peanuts are too hard to chew without breaking a tooth. We did tell the waitress to not put peanuts in our food, but she forgot. Since she was nice, we didn’t complain; we just picked them out. I’d go back for the dry noodles and maybe a few other things, but not the soup noodles. I think 4 stars is quite generous since I liked one thing and it’s been a while since I found something new that I like. =)

This is a small family– run eatery located next to the Budget rent-a-car. Some items are spicy. It’s not terribly expensive. $ 4– $ 5 for what looks to be appetizers. $ 5-$ 6 for noodles. $ 7-$ 8 for entrees. Flavorful, not too salty… I would come back to try other items.
