Pepe’s Mexican Food

I was craving Carne Asada Fries. Pepe’s has a generous portion with soft fries, mounds of beef, guacamole, cheese, and sour cream. It’s a good amount of food for the price. I would say I would have liked a little more guacamole, because by the time I was hitting the last bits of fries, the flavor was no longer balanced. The serving size is similar to the Chili Cheese Fries at The Hat, and the price is comparable.
I had a bite of my hubby’s Wet Burrito as well. It was okay. It has a lot of rice, which I’m not fond of in my burritos.

Love the Bean and Cheese wet burrito! It is a HUGE burrito covered in red sauce. The tray is filled with sauce and tortilla chips. Saucey goodness! The enchiladas are also delicious. One order comes with 2 in a container. The sauce is sooooo good! The sauce

You can never go wrong with Pepe’s. The chile cheese fries are so… good and breakfast burrito is one of my favorites. The hardest thing for me to what to choose from. The staff is pretty awesome too.#Pepe’s

Fantastic quick Mexican food when you really need a good boost after a long night class. My friend and I come here after nearly every night class. Great pricing, delicious food, you have to try the California burrito!

I’ve been coming here, every now and then, since middle school. Delicious chili cheese fries, hits the spot every single time! Their large chili cheese fries can fill two people (possibly 3). The small order of the fries is pretty small (less than half of the large), but only around a dollar difference. I personally think there is a little too much cheese, so I usually ask for light cheese. I’ve tried their carne asada burrito, which I find to be very heavy. It is filled with a lot of meat, beans as well as some pico de gallo. Tacos are mediocre; sometimes I find the meat to be right, but other times, a little too salty. Prices have been increasing slowly. Only outdoor seating. Drive thru is packed during lunch hours. There is a very small parking lot in the back, but there are a lot of side streets you can park on as well.

This is always my go to place in Alhambra for Mexican food. Just like we had back home in Arizona. It’s always consistently good, large portions, and great service. I recommend getting the rice with their special delicious green chili sauce, shredded beef tacos, and the nacho fries.

Good food. Great carne Asada nachos. Great shredded beef taquitos. Great hard shell shredded beef tacos. Okay burritos.

I had to compare the beef hard taco with that of Pepe’s in Brea. This one is better, the beef is lightly seasoned compared to the plain, tasting oily beef at Brea. The mountain of chilled cheese, lettuce and tomato contrasted nicely with the hot beef, and crispy taco shell. I should have ordered another taco, but I got a tasty red burrito. Very good in this wet,. Rainy day… I’ve been going here off and on for many years. Sometimes I’m in the area so I’ll be here more often.

This is a great late night run for those Mexican food munchies. I love that it opens ’til the wee hours of the morning. The carne asada fries were good and satisfying, albeit they were not the best I’ve ever had. I am not a fan of hard shell tacos but the carne asada hard shell tacos were pretty damn good. I could eat a handful of those!
One night, my boyfriend brought me back a chilaquiles burrito from Pepe’s and it was one of the most satisfying burritos I’ve ever devoured in my life. Melting gooey cheese, slight crunch from the tortillas, flavorful sauce, and all wrapped beautifully in a warm burrito.
However, heed this warning that the drive thru can get hectic. It’s also kind of a squeeze. Also, I was disheartened on one occasion when I realized that they didn’t have al pastor, but no biggie. I can move on to other proteins.
I’m grateful for the flavorful Mexican food, late night hours, and close proximity to my residence. The menu is extensive and the prices very reasonable, so I will be back many more times in the future!

I’ve been coming here on off for over 20 years. Oh my. Yet I’ve neglect to write a review till now. Just lazy I guess and they already have very good review that they really don’t need another.
It’s my go to spot if I want a machaca (⁵⁄₅) or chili verde (⁴⁄₅) burrito. I haven’t gotten one for a long time so I stopped by for a green burrito today. What I got was a Colorado (³⁄₅) burrito. I guessed they got mixed up but I didn’t bother and thought what the hey I’ll just review the red one instead.
You should know that their burrito is not the dry type like say the one you get at chipotle. Their bean is wet and runny and almost smashed. Their chili both red and green are wet and runny. There’s no filler like rice or vegetable. So you have to wrap up the burrito tightly and squeeze from the bottom as you eat or the wrapper will break and everything spill out at the bottom.
Red chili Colorado taste wise is just ok and will do in a pinch but nothing that mama will have to worry about. The taste has some spice in it but is bland overall. The meat is lean but on the dry side even in all of that wet and runny sauce. The spiciness level is almost nonexistent. Hmm. I almost want to call this semi-​Mexican-​food. But maybe that’s over exaggerating. They do have chili bottle that you can squirt more chili but it too is not as spicy as I remember.
Atmosphere: 2.5÷5 stars
It’s a bit of a rundown hole in the Wall Place. It’s really a Togo place with patio seating added on. So on a hot sunny Cal day you’ll be feeling the heat from the sun and the food. There’s a drive through right next to the patio so the exhaust will add to the atmosphere.
Service: 3.5÷5 stars
Not much service except for the food ordering really. But the people are friendly and will get you what you need.
Expense: ⁴⁄₅ stars
About $ 8 for breakfast burrito and coffee. Cheap eat for the amount of food you get. I almost always get food coma after eating here. The carb, the meat, the amount all added up to overload your digestive system.
Return: ⁵⁄₅ stars
It’s delicious and convenient. It’s not fancy but it’s only one of a few Mexican alternative in this heavily biased Chinese cuisine metropolis. After more than 20 years and I still return. Not many places can claim that honor.

Ate this place for the first time, I’m not a huge fan of mexican food but this place was definitely one of the best I’ve had. I like how they have a drive-​through definitely make everything a lot faster.
I order the carne asada fries (Small) $ 4.50, i love how their fries is shaped, like thick crinkle cut fries, texture was perfect. Unfortunately the meat is a little bit tough but the taste was overpowering the texture so that wasn’t such a big deal. Their red sauce (Sorry i don’t know the actual name) was delicious. My coworker got their taco which I am definitely going to try next time. Their service was great according to her and the price is average so definitely affordable. I also heard from my friends that pretty much all of their items on the menu are delicious so there no doubt when I crave for mexican food I’ll come back to this place.
Overall, 4 stars for service, 4 stars for food, 5 stars for convenience, and 4 stars for atmosphere. I’ll definitely come back and try their Taco.

These are not your usual chili cheese fries. They are a combination of thick crinkle cut fries and a cheesy gravy with a few jalapeños.
I’ve been here multiple times. My most recent time, I was initially sad. Because I thought they didn’t put a lot of the gravy. However, after about a minute, it was drowned in the deliciousness. Let it sink in, guys!
Large drinks are actually… humongous!!! Very generous place, my fellow Unilocalers.
The only seating at this Pepe’s is outdoor, so if it’s a cold winter night, you might want to get to-​go. I prefer this location over the others.

This is standard SoCal quality Mexican food… which is to say in general it’s probably better than most places in the US.
So relative to other areas in the US it’s above average but relative to other Mexican restaurants in SoCal it’s average at best.
The menu is fairly large with your standard burritos and tacos but they also have a good selection of «plates» like fajitas and enchiladas.
Not a bad option if you are hungry and in the area but for reference it’s not as good as local fan favorite King Taco

HANDS DOWN, MY FAVORITE GO-​TO SPOT!
I’ve been a regular customer since my elementary school days (yes, we go way back!). Every item on the menu is delicious, especially their chili cheese fries and original quesadilla with carne asada (looks like a burrito). I’m telling you, there’s something extra special about that sauce =) Definitely worth the try!

Legit hard shell tacos! Nothing to write home about the ambience of this place. Outside patio seating, order over the counter, plastic utensils. However, the hard shell tacos are bomb! Loaded with meat of choice (get the beef), lettuce, tomatoes, and a big handful of shredded cheese. Topped with red or green salsa (get the red), it’s a party in your mouth with every bite. Also great is the horchata and at $ 1.99 for the large cup, it’s a steal. I am picky about my horchata and Pepe’s does not disappoint. It’s got the perfect ratio or rice flavor, cinnamon, and the right amount of sweetness to bring it all together.
Don’t want to eat there? They have two drive-​thru windows. One on each side of the building ready to take your order. Parking in the back.

Those tacos… Those hard shell beef tacos…
So good. It’s that throwback style done so well. If you aren’t familiar with their hand made hard shell tacos you’re missing out.
Side note: my wife always asks for extra ice when she orders orange bang and almost every time we receive an orange bang with little or no ice. The guy at pepes made sure we got enough ice and was way cool about it. Great customer service!

Item ordered: Green Chili Pork (chili verde) and eggs breakfast burrito
I’ve been here several times but this is the first time getting their chili verde breakfast burrito. I usually like to get their regular breakfast burrito which has bacon.
The size of the burrito was pretty big, and the burrito tasted good. The chunks of pork are pretty big. Overall is was pretty good, but I prefer their regular breakfast burrito.
Other things I would recommend getting here are their nacho fries.

Holy moly batman! Amidst the rest of Asian nation in Alhambra, there’s Pepe’s. Those large size carne asada fries though… they’re the size of a small child! If you have a friend, you should get the large and split because it’s way more than enough for 2 people, and only $ 7.99! The regular is $ 6.10 and much smaller. Go big or go home right? Everything is so cheap!!! There’s also a drive through but if you go at an off time (around 2−3pm) there will be no line whatsoever! This place is dangerous…
For cheap, quick, delicious Mexican food, Pepe’s is your place!

Yep another fan of their famous BREAKFAST BURRITOS! Doesn’t look like Pepe’s has changed much since 1962. Same little storefront where you order/​pay at the window and same picnic-​style outdoor seating. If you don’t want to stay and enjoy the view of Valley Blvd, there’s a drive-​thru.
So, of all the breakfast burritos I’ve tried recently, I think this one was my favorite. Their breakfast burrito includes eggs, potatoes, beans, cheese and your choice of meat. The burrito was a good size and there was plenty of meat (I got the bacon). It’s really good on its own, but even better with some red salsa and green sauce!

In a community (Alhambra/​Monterey Park) filled with too many Chinese restaurants, Pepe’s is a welcome sight for those who are in dire need of some comforting mexican food.
For those of you who are visiting Pepe’s for the first time, it may be a little confusing. At the drive tru-​window, you order and pay at the first window. Afterwards, you drive around to the other side to pick up your order. There is also a back parking lot for those who want to eat at the outdoor patio of Pepe’s.
I always get the carne asasda fries. It is quite a delight; the carne asada fries are filled with an overwhelmingly amount of guacamole, cheese, and carne asada. The half portions cost $ 6.10 while the large portions (2x the size) are almost $ 8. The one thing that sets this Pepe’s apart from many of the other Mexican restaurants is that they put beans & rice with your order. If you don’t specify anything, the default option is beans, located underneath your carne asada fries. If you prefer rice, just let them know!
Even their breakfast burrito comes with beans, but that can get changed upon request as well. Food is good here and the employees are friendly. That makes Pepe’s my go-​to destination for Mexican food in the Alhambra /​Monterey Park area.
