Momo Sushi & Cafe

Pretty decent sushi for the DC metro area. The price is reasonable and the fish was good. not as fresh as the sushi in California but very good for the DC area. It was a little bit off the well beaten King St. path so it’s a bit less touristy.
Came here with a friend for dinner and we were seated promptly after a short 10 minute wait. After seating us at a table for 4 they kindly asked us to move to a table for 2 and even gave us edamame on the house. The host and waitresses were very attentive and the rolls and dishes were prepared promptly even though they had a full house.
My favorite is a fried roll: dynamite roll. salmon, cream cheese, and jalapeño.
The standard rolls (tuna, spicy tuna, etc.) will run you about $ 6 or so give or take a dollar or two depending if you want the crunch version or the spicy version.
Their specialty rolls are $ 10 and up. Very nice pricing for the area.
Although they have two stories they are still an extremely small restaurant.
Would definitely come again the next time I’m craving sushi.
And I would recommend this place to anyone who’s looking for good sushi in the DC area.
It’s just a quick King Street Trolley ride from the King Street Metro station.

The push is not bad, some of the fish didn’t seem incredibly fresh, but this could be because we literally went after a terrible blizzard, perhaps their ingredients could have not been up to their normal par. Its a good place, nothing GREAT in my opinion. I have eaten at 100s of sushi places all across the country and for the quality and the options i think it is completely too pricey. I could have gone to one of those fruffy not really sushi but looks like sushi but you’re really paying for the ambience type places for the amount I paid. I most likely won’t be returning! Two people a few rolls, (not all the specials), $ 66.00 not including tip. Yeah not so much!

We really enjoyed sushi from this spot. We are avid sushi eaters and usually get it once a week. This time we decided to stray from a favorite and found this place! We are big on very fresh sashimi and creative, saucy rolls/​maki. We also usually order own or two nigiri pieces of something more special.
What we got:

Flavorless seared tuna. No «ponzu» sauce detected
–Edamame (²⁄₅)
It was very overlooked and not salted
–Sweet shrimp nigiri (⁵⁄₅)
–Salmon belly nigiri (⁵⁄₅)
–Chef’s Special Sashimi platter (⁴⁄₅)
Great selection and very fresh fish! Especially salmon and red snapper
–Spider Roll (⁴⁄₅)
A little heavy on the rice
–Dynamite Roll (³⁄₅)
Giant chunks of jalapeño that were tough to chew through and heavy on the rice
–Japanese Lasagna Roll (⁵⁄₅)
–Fire Crunch Roll (³⁄₅)
Lots of stuff going on but actually a bit bland
Overall we would come back here but now we definitely know what to order and what not to!

Last thing I expect at a Sushi place is undercooked grilled chicken and a bug running across the counter. Even the waitresses saw it and apologized. Roaches and Sushi, not a good mix.

Found this quaint little sushi house by way of Unilocal!Pleasantly surprised, this place was BUSY BUSY BUSY with eat in, and carry out. The sushi was absolutely delicious, but my service was not so great :-(. Upon entering, I was immediately greets and seated at the sushi bar. I immediately ordered a Sapporo Beer and salmon salad, which came out quickly, and accompanied by a hot bowl of miso soup. Next I ordered 3 rolls, which came out quickly and beautifully presented. All of the food was delicious, but I was never checked on, to see if I enjoyed the food, if I needed anything else, or if everything was ok! All other patrons received water refills, extra napkins, and made to feel welcome. After sitting for 15mins, and completely finished with my meal, a lady brought my check, collected my money, and disappeared. I grabbed my things and departed. No one said thank you, come again, NADA. Not sure if I’ll return, merely because the customer service was not to my liking… my money is green like everyone else that was in the restaurant, yet the level of service I received was undesirable.

Great little sushi joint in Old Town. Super friendly and the sushi is fresh and unadulterated. They have special rolls like most places but its not their main focus such that the basic rolls aren’t fantastic. Feels like a neighborhood joint with a small bar you can sit at. Service is prompt and consistent.
Wasabi was light on the first delivery of the food so if you like wasabi make sure to ask for extra.

We walked by this place a few times and based on the stellar Unilocal reviews, it was on my ‘must-​visit’ list. We arrived very early in the evening and got seated right away. This place brings in a lot of patrons. It was mid-​week and the place had a waiting list by 7pm.
I ordered an appetizer plate of tempura (shrimp/​veggies) and the hubby ordered the Beef Teriyaki Dinner Box. I expected the tempura to be mouth-​watering and crispy but it was just average, and honestly was a bit small and greasy. I also ordered my go-​to sushi of Salmon Skin Roll. The skin is usually crispy and tasty and this was almost non-​existent. Hubby’s bento box was small for the price point of $ 17. He commented that the beef was good although not as plentiful as other bento boxes that he has eaten.
Service was quick and accommodating. Parking is on the street and there appears to be spaces available during the week.

As Collin S. said, it’s definitely tricky to find quality sushi in the DMV, and I’m not sure why, either. It’s especially difficult having moved here from SF. Le sigh.
For awhile there, I gave up on my healthy love. Until I found Momo last Friday! I was so hooked, I came here again tonight. So far I’ve tried their Island Sunrise Roll, Hawaiian Sunset Roll, Spider Roll, and their Rainbow Roll. (Yes, I know, that’s a lot of fish! I may have gotten carried away on Friday eve. :p) I’ve also tried their Hamachi and Sake — both nigiri and sashimi, and their Maguro sashimi. I haven’t tried anything I didn’t like, and the quality of the fish seemed great! No fishy smell or taste (a clear indicator that something is wrong), and everything was delightfully fresh! Melt in your mouth fresh!
Also, the sushi chefs were super friendly, and their pick-​up ordering process is easy.
I’m glad I’ve finally found a reliable option! Now if only they delivered… ;-)

Momo sushi. I want some more! My friends introduced to me this small hole in the wall sushi joint in a quiet neighborhood in Alexandria and boy am I glad she did! There’s a limited number of seats and they don’t take reservations so come early!
The sushi was super fresh and super cheap. Most places that have cheap sushi usually lack in freshness — but not here! There’s a good selection of sushi rolls and Japanese fare.
The service was really great given how small the restaurant is. FYI there’s two floors and each floor has its own sushi bar so your sushi is made fairly quickly!
By far my favorite sushi spot in the DMV area! Just so sad that I live so far away, but I would definitely make that drive just for the fresh sushi!

Went there for my birthday (10.21).
I really do not understand how this place gets good reviews by so called sushi connoisseurs.
The restaurant is very, very small & cold (the air conditioner was on & blowing right on me).
The shushi is extremely overpriced.
The portions are small.
I ordered the Spicy Tuna, Toro, & Unagi (eel).
The Spicy Tuna was dry, lacked taste, & had too much sauce.
The Unagi was also dry and overcooked/​warmed up (at $ 20.00 not worth it) .
The Toro was actually very good but unbelievably expensive ($ 10.00+ for 2 peices).
If you are a sushi lover, please save your money & go elsewhere.

Definitely the best sushi in the DMV area!
I went to Momo on a Wednesday, arriving a little bit after 7 pm. I got seated immediately at the sushi bar. It was too crowded on a weekday evening. The waitress somehow magically knew when I was ready and came to take down my order.
If I have to name one thing that is slightly disappointing, it would be that Momo does have a lot of take-​out customers. Their orders are also handled by the sushi bar, which delays the dine-​in customers order. I waited a good 30 minutes before my food got on the table. The sushi chef was kind enough to give me two appetizers, on the house, to make sure I don’t starve.
Food wise, the sushi is amazing. Fish is fresh, and the sushi rice has the right balance of softness and vinegar. The size of the sushi is just about right. Small enough to be eaten in one bite, but big enough to have you fed by the end of the meal. I’ve seen some of the reviews, complaining that the sushi served at Momo is warm. Well, THAT’S WHAT SUSHI IS SUPPOSED TO BE! You won’t be able to taste the flavor and the texture of the fish when it is just taken out of the fridge.
The whole experience was good. The waiters are helpful but not intruding. I definitely will go back to Momo, a lot.

Writing this review at 12:45 am is seriously making me hungry…
I have been a long-​time patron of Momo Sushi and it NEVER fails me.
The servers are always nice and the owners are amazing; top-​down approach in servers’ attitude and personalities. Kudos!
The rolls are amazing. Even as simple as spicy tuna roll, their homemade spicy sauce, wasabi sauce, and other specialty sauces are always on-​point. I can’t even pick ONE favorite roll because all their rolls are amazing.
Entrees are good. Not as good as the rolls and the sushi. Try staying away from ordering entrees and order more fish.
They have three choices of ice cream. Ginger, red beans, and green tea. Their turnover rate for ginger and green tea is so high that the quality of ice cream is superb. Must get.
If I can have Momo every single day for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t even be mad; only my bank account but that goes the same way with all the other sushi restaurants.
If you are looking for a new sushi restaurant in this area, you HAVE to visit Momo Sushi.

Momo has been on my to-​eat list for years and this past weekend, Will C. and I conveniently had a sushi craving that needed to be satisfied. We walked into Momo around 5:30pm and were seated immediately. Momo’s seating is quite cramped and they do not take reservations, so plan accordingly if you plan on dining here. I should note that there’s two levels of seating and while I did not venture up onto the second level, I’m sure it is quite small much like the first level.
We decided to go with some yellowtail, eel, salmon, mackeral, white tuna, and scallop for our nigiri options. For our rolls, we ordered yellowtail, tuna, and a Island Sunrise Roll (very similar to a California roll with a little bit of white tuna and salmon). In terms of the nigiri, I was not a fan of the fish to rice ratio. There was way too much rice, which prevented me from enjoying the fish. The quality of the fish is average — not quite as good as Yoshi, but better than Tachibana or Yama. The mackerel definitely left me with an unpleasant taste in my mouth. I’m well aware of the fact that mackerel is a fishy fish, but DAMN the mackerel I had at Momo tasted like straight up ocean. No bueno. It kinda ruined my appetite for the remainder of the meal.
I definitely think Momo is better known for their rolls, but I wasn’t in too much of a roll-​y mood the other night. I can see myself coming back to Momo again if 1.) I’m at Will C.‘s house we’re too lazy to go elsewhere and 2.) I want rolls. However, for now I feel like good sushi is near impossible to come by unless I make my way over to DC. The hunt continues…

My girlfriend and I are still on the look out for a good sushi place around our area so we decided to give Momo a shot. I tried out Momo a couple years ago and at that point I thought it was decent. We had an early dinner at 5:30 on a Saturday evening and we were seated immediately. At first we were seated downstairs at the bar but then later we requested to be move to a table. Sitting at the bar is a bit cramped.
We were quite hungry so we opted to get a couple of rolls because they tend to be more filling. We ordered the yellow tail roll, tuna roll, Island sunrise roll, and various pieces of nigiri (eel, salmon, yellowtail, white tuna, scallop and mackerel). Their rolls are pretty standard; although I will preface and say they had other interesting rolls but my gf and I did not opt for them since we aren’t huge fans of rolls that are doused in sauces. As far as their nigiri goes, the sushi chefs here use too much rice and the rice itself was a bit dry. The quality of the fish served here is average, however I would like to point out their mackerel has a very strong fishy smell/​after taste. Mackerel naturally has a strong fishy scent but this was probably the worst I have ever dealt with. I had to eat a couple of ginger pieces/​drink water afterwards to wash the flavor away from my mouth.
Service here is good. The food came out quickly (~10 minutes). Now let’s get to the most important point– if you are a fan of nigiri I would recommend seeking elsewhere. From my observation most diners choose to stick with rolls here. I guess my search for a decent a sushi place in the area will have to continue.

Solid four star restaurant. Food here is good and service is good considering how packed this tiny place is. I got the chirashi bowl and beef dumplings. The bowl was pretty good, but not the best chirashi bowl I have tried. The bowl came with a decent amount of raw fish. There were other toppings in it like: pickled ginger, seaweed salad, cucumbers, radish, and more. The bowl came with a side salad and miso soup.
I also tried their beef dumplings which were good. They were pretty pricy though. We got four small dumplings for five dollars.
For dessert we got the green tea and ginger ice cream. The green tea ice cream was good and ginger ice cream was different, but I didn’t really like it that much. It had a strong ginger taste.
Service here is decent and workers are pretty friendly. Cute place in Old Town for some Japanese food.

On my monthly dinner date with fellow Unilocal Elite, Megan C., we decided it was time for some sushi in Old Town. With several options at our finger tips we settled on Momo Suhi & Café and what a wonderful decision!
Upon arrival we were told to head upstairs to be seated for dinner. Check out the stairs as you are walking up them, they are beautifully painted with Koi fish. Like the rest of the restaurant, the upstairs is small and has limited seating options, so be prepared to get cozy with your dinner party!
Here’s what we were eating last night:
Iidako (baby octopus)
Spicy Yellow Tail Roll
Hawaiian Sun Set Roll (Salmon, avocado, cucumber, crab, pineapple on top)
Key West Roll (Tuna, salmon, avocado, cucumber, crab on top w/​wasabi sauce)
All of the rolls were insanely fresh, which is always a positive with sushi! I’ve never had baby octopus in a sushi roll before and I was rather impressed. This tasted like it was marinated in some type of smokey-​bbq-​esk sauce but it really made it stand out. The sushi rice was one the sweeter side as well. I wish the Key West Roll had more wasabi sauce, rather than a mayo based sauce but to each their own. Check out the Hawaiian Sun Set Roll there is just something about pineapple with sushi that made this roll really standout to me!
Upon requesting more wasabi, our waiter immediately brought us another dish. The service at Momo is quick and efficient but you will never feel like you are being rushed. I can’t wait to come back to Momo to try their other offereings!

My first time visiting Old Alexandria and we were in the mood for sushi. We Unilocaled it of course and the place got some good reviews so we decided to try it out.
When you walk in, there’s a small eating area but don’t be discouraged there is also upstairs seating, still fairly small but I was comfortable and had plenty of room.
The menu is easy to read through and they give you a pencil to circle or mark what rolls you want. I always find that to be the easiest when ordering sushi.
The edamame came — it was soggy and mushy and there was a very small portion (my boyfriends 6’3 so you understand). That was probably my only complaint. Edamame is the best part of the whole sushi experience BUT I will give them the benefit of the doubt that its not always like that and the rolls made up for it.
We ordered the Hawaiian sunset roll (salmon, avocado, pineapple on top)
Spicy tuna roll (my favorite roll everywhere I go and it was delicious here)
Dancing eel roll (wasn’t my favorite but my bf loved it).
Shrimp tempura– delicious!
Vegas roll — the whole roll is deep fried and there is eel and cream cheese in it. (Sounds a little strange but it was also very yummy).
I recommend this place for a quick lunch to get your sushi fix.

Wowee! This place is seriously amazing. Don’t be dissuaded by the seemingly tiny interior (they have an upstairs area) or the throng of people standing in the narrow hallway, waiting for a table (tables open up quicker than you think). The food here was excellent and very likely the best sushi I’ve had in the DC area. Fresh, tasty, and a very generous portion.
I visited on a Friday evening with a friend who was visiting me from out of town and told me she was craving sushi. Momo, with its great Unilocal ratings, seemed like a good choice. We trudged for half an hour through the snow to get to Momo and it was completely worth it. Let me repeat that: Completely worth it. The restaurant is located on Queen Street in Old Town Alexandria. It’s a quaint little street that runs perpendicular to King Street. It was packed on a Friday night and when we put our names down, they told us it would be an estimated 20 minute wait. We were really cold (it was another 20 degree night) but we were determined to get sushi, so we waited. The waiters/​waitresses are extremely efficient so our wait actually ended up being closer to 10 minutes rather than 20.
As for food, we both ordered our own combo box — the Sushi and Sashimi box (priced at $ 25) and it was a very generous portion! It came with: Very fresh Sashimi (2 pieces each of salmon, tuna, yellowtail), sushi (Salmon, tuna, yellowtail, shrimp), spicy tuna roll (6 pieces), salmon salad (amazing!!!), miso soup, and a cup of rice. Wow wow wow. That was an extremely filling and satisfying meal. The sushi was very fresh and the roll was delicious and very large portions with plenty of fish. And of course, that salmon salad was probably the highlight for me because it was new to me and was extremely rich and satisfying.
The atmosphere is casual and cozy. Service is excellent (polite, efficient, and really seem to care about customer satisfaction).
I can’t sing enough praises about this place. If you find yourself craving sushi and come here and see a long wait, don’t be dissuaded. This place is completely worth it!

Old Town has a plethora of food options, which I love. Many you can find off the «beaten path» of King Street. Momo Sushi and Café is off King Street close to the waterfront. It’s a small restaurant with seating on two floors and two sushi prep stations. My friends and I sat downstairs and looked over the menu. They have different sushi options to choose from.
We chose Yellowtail Nigiri, Rainbow Roll, Dragon Roll, and Spicy Crunch Roll with Yellowtail. We also ordered green tea which came in an adorable tea pot and kitten tea cups. The sushi came out in a big platter and their presentation was good. The sushi was delicious. Fresh, a good balance of flavors, and well made. Even after years of eating sushi, I’m always impressed with how much sushi can fill you up. We ordered just enough for the three of us. No leftovers here!
Service was good and the place is clean and cozy. Prices are average for sushi I think, so not too bad overall.

I don’t know where to start with this review. I ccould eat sushi every day of my life and I finally have found the best I have tried in my life right in my backyard. Momo is small and intimate, as it should be. The warm sake was flowing and warmed the bones on that cold Virginia night.
I had three: octopus, salmon roe and shrimp nigiri. All were fantastic in their own way. Satisfying without too filling and leaving me wanting more. You want this. I try to convince myself every evening why I forgo Momo, and more than often I give in.
