The Art League Gallery is a membership gallery located on the first floor of the landmark Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria. With nearly 2,000 square feet of exhibit space and over 1,000 members; visitors are guaranteed a chance to see the best visual art in the mid-​Atlantic region.

As a non-​profit 501©(3), The Art League Gallery provides opportunities for local artists to have their work juried by visual arts professionals from area museums, galleries and universities. In addition to monthly juried group exhibits, artists with a strong, cohesive, exciting body of work are selected for solo shows.

History

Established in 1954.

The Art League, Inc. is a 501©(3) charitable and educational nonprofit organization. The League is a multifaceted visual arts organization that meets its mission through its gallery, fine art school, art supply store, and arts-​outreach programs.

I recently took a beginning stained glass class here– it was WONDERFUL!!! The teacher (Jimmy Powers) was basically the perfect art instructor: professional, knowledgeable, genuinely interested and helpful, and so SO talented. The people in the class were from different art backgrounds trying to do all kinds of different things, and it was the freedom to pursue the projects that interested each of us that made this class particularly awesome. I learned so much– and can now make art in a way I never thought I’d be able!!! Rock on, Art League!

Located inside the Torpedo Factory, this place is both a gallery and a school. It has been at this location for over fifty years– that certainly says something about the Art League’s staying power.
This gallery shows its own artists’ (mostly local folks) work as well as hosts juried exhibits once a month. A good number of the artists that show at this particular gallery also went to its school– The Art League School. Many people confuse the Torpedo Factory with the Art League since the Art League and part of the school reside inside of the Factory.
This is a popular place for art students from other schools to do internships. The Art League also takes volunteers.
Tip: Mark your calendar for January 13th. That’s the day that the tix for the Must See Show– The Patrons’ Show.” For that exhibit, those lucky peeps who get tickets get to pick what artists and which works are on display.
