Jeff’s Saab & Sprinter Shop

My turbo in my Sprinter was persistently losing power, forcing me into Limp Home mode, often when I was thousands of miles from home. I took it to a diesel mechanic in Apache Junction Arizona who said that it needed part of the turbo replaced, but Mercedes doesn’t just sell the part, they sell only the entire turbo unit. He quoted me $ 2800 plus labour for a rebuilt or $ 4800 plus labour for a new one. I passed and went for a second opinion at Mercedes of Chandler, in Chandler, AZ. They said that the turbo hose was loose and they tightened it for $ 50. 150 miles later and climbing the hills between Phoenix and Payson, AZ, I lost the turbo again. My head was about to explode as I needed to get to Albuquerque that same day. In Limp Home Mode, with no power on the hills, I made it to Albuquerque, 2 hours later than planned.
I searched for a Sprinter mechanic in Albuquerque and found Jeff. I called him up, told him what the problem was. Jeff said, with little hesitation, that it didn’t sound like a hose issue, it sounded more like the turbo resonator (a muffler on the turbo). He said it has a plastic casing that is likely split and spilling the pressure out. When the plastic heats up, it expands and causes the leak.
I asked if I could bring the van in first thing Monday morning (this was all happening on a Thursday, but I was tied up in ABQ til Monday). He said sure. 8 AM sharp on Monday, Jeff welcomed me into his shop and the van got lifted up. Shortly after the resonator was removed, and sure enough, the plastic was separating at the seam. Amazingly, Jeff had an OEM replacement on hand. Shortly thereafter the new one was in and I was back on the road. 1 week and 1000 miles later, the turbo is running like a dream.
It took an independent in ABQ minutes to diagnose what trained Mercedes techs couldn’t. Plus he charged a fair price and his service was nothing less than top notch, courteous and professional; essential for someone who needs to keep mobile for their work.
I have already recommended Jeff to fellow artists that drive Sprinters to keep Jeff at the top of their list if they need service in the ABQ area. I only wish he was in the Phoenix area where I live as he is one of those diamonds in the rough.

GREAT. Jeff is a great guy! He makes you feel at ease and comfortable with what he is doing. He certainly knows what he is doing! Most recently, I took my 9 – 3 in to get my Xenon bulb replaced. It went out THAT morning, and Jeff was able to fit me in and complete the job before he closed up for the day! (replacing a bulb on these cars is not easy, by the way!)
I have noticed that he does try to get most work completed the same day, which is something that is rare. His pricing is very reasonable, considering that he is working on mostly high end or rare vehicles!

A coworker recommended Jeff’s Auto Repair to me when my car started to make a funny noise. When I first read their reviews on Unilocal,I was happy to see that the shop had good reviews, but I was worried they only worked on Saabs — not true.
Jeff knows a ton about all cars. I asked him to go for a ride to hear the noise. He knew what the problem was within 10 seconds. He had it fixed in 24 hours (control arm and ball joint.) I told him that my old mechanic said my brakes had 50% life left, Jeff told me he was wrong and my brakes were fine. I think the price was fair… more than I wanted to spend, but a necessary repair. All I know is that the noise stopped and my car is running better now so I’m happy.
Jeff and his dad run the shop. They are kind and funny people. They are easy to get a hold of and return calls promptly. I felt very comfortable working with both of them. My husband was equally pleased. We will definitely be returning for our next repair.

If you Own a Saab and want a mechanic who is knowledgeable, personable, fast, reasonable and one that will take the time to properly educate and inform you on your vehicle, then Jeff Benson is your man! I drive two Saabs and I wouldn’t trust them to anyone else. He definitely knows his Saabs and if you own a classic Saab as I do, he will help you keep it rolling smoothly down the road. No B.S., No non-​sense, he just deals with you straight up and gets the job done, so why go anywhere else?

Jeff is the best mechanic to go to for any Saab service. His fees are reasonable, he is friendly, and he knows his stuff! I ended up using another repair shop in town for a minor issue and later found out I would have paid half with Jeff. I am glad to have him in Albuquerque and trust him with my tank of a car (2001 Saab 9 – 3 hatchback).

I didn’t know who he was or if I could trust this mechanic when I first came here, but I spent some time talking to the owner Jeff and he made me feel pretty comfortable. Jeff Benson has been repairing SAABs for over 35 years.
One man shop, takes real good care of his customers and knows his stuff. Works specifically on SAABs mostly, has good relationships with auto parts shops in the Southwest.
His quotes were significantly less expensive than others, since he doesn’t waste your time. He was able to diagnose the problem, call around for a used part if possible, and hook you up. Helped me out with two motor mounts and a inner driver that was causing my car to shimmy.
I was visiting from California, I wish I had a great mechanic like Jeff in the Bay Area. I highly recommend this shop!
