Cheba Hut

So, the day after (actually for two days), Cheba Hut sent me a free sandwich (made correctly) and were apologetic. I must say they were a class act and I am amending my review. The Cheba Hut will make it right and has excellent customer service. I will try this place again and all is forgiven.

Today is ⁴⁄₂₀ and i figured the perfect opportunity to try out Cheba Hut. While the food at Cheba Hut is excellent (i got the chicken and ranch sandwich), i have to say my favorite thing was the positive energy constantly coming from the staff– not the fake smiles you get at a lot of other food places, but actual sincere happiness! There was constantly a line out the door and all the while i was conversing with the staff and they all said they were having a great time! Best environment in Albuquerque if you ask me!

Literally have to wait 45+ minutes for every delivery I’ve ever had from Cheba Hut. I live less than five minutes away… Why deliver if you can’t even get there within 30 minutes? Food is fine, usually cold by the time it gets here… I’m thinking that they shouldn’t deliver anymore lol.

If sweaty, beer guzzling, spliff smoking, beard sporting, wannabe hipster, 20-​something year old, college drop out, skateboard toting trophy bros just brimming over swashbuckling immature charm is what is on your menu at all hours of your modus operandi… And you are too stoned and/​or drunk to care about the quality of the sandwich you are eating because you are so excited that it has been named after your favorite strain of weed that you can’t actually get because you live in Albuquerque… Then congratulations. Cheba Hut is your new home away from home.
Otherwise, just get delivery (which takes 45 min even if you live a stones throw away) to avoid mingling with the «crowd.» (People actually hang out there so much you just might run into some body you know. Gross.)

Good place to go for a quick beer and sandwich. The sandwiches are unique and taste great. It’s an order at the counter restaurant but they still have a bar in the corner serving mimosas and local craft beer on tap.

Loooooooooooved the Kali Mist (California Club)! Turkey, chipotle mayo, jalapeños, bacon, pepper jack & avocado served toasty! Mmmm mmmm. I think my La Cumbre beer (order separately at the bar area) was only $ 3 because I purchased a sandwich. Service was friendly. Minus 1 star for the obnoxious bro-​crowd clientele.

Really good food/​staff and you can’t go wrong with a bar inside a sub shop! Their munchies are also on point, love this place.

Went downtown today looking for a different sub shop. Ended up at Cheba Hut instead. What an incredible find. Everyone loved their sandwich. Staff was super friendly. Thanks for the great experience.

I love this joint right here! My favorite sub is the white widow and of course the kool-​aid hits the spot. Both my husband and I love this place we haven’t tried the beer but the food is delicious.

One of the coolest places in the brick light district close to UNM. Nice hipsters ambience, they have a great music sense and all the people are very cool. great service, i loved their garlic bread in the toasted subs and the Jamaican red sauce. Their menu has a marijuana leaf next to all the vegetarian items! and don’t forget to hit their bongo if u enjoyed your sub!

Great sandwiches, good prices, good service! Would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a filling and delicious sandwich. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very relaxed and mellow but is not normal.

If you’re into toasted sandwiches, this is the place to eat. Although the crowd this restaurant attracts is off beat, the food is totally worth it. Yummy sandwiches with funky names and amazing combinations of ingredients for decent prices. What’s extra cool: every week day there is a special. Mondays are free drinks and chips for students! Close to UNM and always satisfying.

I love this cute lil restaurant! It’s right across campus so my cohort comes often for post-​class draaaaanks. Aside the pot references EVERYWGERE, cheba hut has fabulous happy hour specials and their menu is quite extensive. The food is so good, too! Comfortable atmosphere because the employees are really friendly. Bring your friends!

Fun little themed sandwich shop. Friendly service. Way better than subway or anything else in the area when you are craving a sub.

A little pricey for subs but they do have variety out the yin yang. Three different sizes to choose from as well. I had the guacamole which heads up is spicy! Just order regular avocado and you’ll be fine.
They serve beer! It’s right off campus so I’m sure UNM students all know about this place. Draught beers and sandwiches sounds like a win.
Loved the décor. Lot of marijuana references, anarchy, etc. Gotta check out the daily specials like uniform day. Will be back

Haha… This place always makes me crack up. It is notorious for drawing a very interesting crowd sometimes being a bit wild with the mix of munchies and alcohol.
However, I love this place. This joint is so much better than subway or other chain sandwich place. The food is always so warm and tasty. I love the AlbuCrazy with turkey and green chile, and the Midwest Best is also pretty good. The pretzel nuggets are pretty insanely awesome, and the munchies (cereal bars) are pretty tasty as well. I am a sucker for such sticky, sweet, and gooey items, but what can I say? I love that I can get my favorite chips (the hot munchies mix) because they have such a huge variety of chips… Did I mention they have Kool-​Aid? Isn’t that awesome? Who else serves Kool-​Aid in town? I wish they would start to serve the Tropical Punch!
So if you are ever in need of a warm sub, tasty pretzels, and a huge sugar rush come here! If the atmosphere is too much for you, you can always get a carry out. You can’t go wrong with great subs, reasonably priced beer (with the purchase of a sub), and various daily discounts!

Cheba is my fav low brow spot for cheap beer. It’s the beer drinking spot for people who like Winnings Coffee. Unpretentious to the max. The nachos or cheesy bread are great. PBR is super cheap.

You probably won’t find a more diverse compilation of people in ABQ than at this delectable dive. Yes, Cheba’s made its name by slingin sammies for salivating stoners and coincidentally naming said sammies after variations of the great green ganj itself. My faves of course are the Midwest Best (club) and Afghani (spicey turkey). Can’t go wrong with the Dank (pizza sub), and if you just want something simple, you can always get the Sticky Icky (PB&J). If you order a sammy, you get a $ 2.50 beer. Which brings me to the main reason I go to Cheba… BEER!
Like I said, the crowd at Cheba is quite diverse. You get the usual suspects… college undergrads, post-​grads, guy off the street, people you’re not sure have jobs, and surprisingly… academics like me and my brainy biology buds. Not only is Cheba one of the closest bars to campus, it happens to have killer happy hour prices (cheapest beer on the block, and they serve real pint size beers, unlike The Dive a couple doors down). They always treat us well too!
Being the nature lovers that we are, our favorite spot is on the patio (even when it’s too damn cold to be out there). Recently, we’ve been tending toward the nachos every time (they’re made with Doritos!) — definitely not healthy, but hey — we’re trying to have fun here — let’s leave health out of it ;) You can also get a Beer Bong for the whole table — looks like a gargantuan bong, but has a tap and is filled with beer. Love it! Price per pint is approximately the same as buying individual beers, but hey, sharing is caring!
Did I mention LOCAL BEERs? Yup, Marble, La Cumbre! Highly recommend!

I’ve gone in a few times now and it’s been great every time. They take a while to make the sandwiches but they’re delicious and fully loaded. Beer is only $ 2.50 with the purchase of a sandwich and they’ve got all the best local beers from Marble, Bosque, and La Cumbre. Definitely one of my favorite places in ABQ for a fun and laid back atmosphere.

Cheba Hut is not that bad, so it earns an A-​OK in my book, and my husband is a fan. It earns stars for having:
(1) helpful employees,
(2) great happy hour prices,
(3) Kool-​Aid available as one of the drink choices,
(4) various sizes of sandwiches to enjoy, and
(5) family day on the weekends [where kids eat free for each paying adult entrée].
Cheba Hut can earn more stars by unlocking its restrooms and always having clean restrooms. I guess if Cheba Hut must keep its restrooms locked, there is a reason for it – the area. If this is the case, I can’t blame them since I have seen some of the shady people walking around the Bricklight district. Cheba Hut is just one of the businesses along Central that choses to lock its restrooms. Do you ever wonder how dirty those restroom keys are?
Cheba Hut can earn another star by adding more indoor tables. Perhaps three or four more tables for two can be situated in there for smaller parties. I found it odd that a couple has to take up a table for four because there was limited seating areas. My husband and I like to dine here for a snack during happy hour; I think he can get pour of the Pabst for around two dollars at that time. We will also bring our daughters here if the kiddos feel like having sandwiches for lunch or dinner.
I have not noticed any free parking areas in the area unless you stop in after 6:00 pm when the city parking spaces no longer require payment. But, even if you should need to pay for a city parking space, it’s only a dollar an hour, and you can even pay in minute intervals. We’ve even paid for only 15 minutes to cover us from 5:45 pm to 6:00 pm in order to avoid a parking ticket. Don’t quote me on this, but I heard certain economic cars are able to park for free in city spaces, yet you need to verify this rumor with someone who actually drives one of those cars.
Offhand I cannot recall if you can park for free in the Bricklight parking area or not. If so, there is a lot just west of Cheba Hut. I’ll have to remind myself by taking more photos of the parking areas the next time I’m in the UNM area. At any rate, good job Cheba. I like your place and your name.
