I should have written this in 2004 when I first experience interacting with Leland Traiman, the owner of this business. Let me just say that I have never forgotten the «testing» he performed and meeting him in his office/​home in Alameda, CA. I remember leaving super depressed and feeling that I would never be able to father a child. Let me state from the start that I may not have super sperm that is going to survive freezing and I may not have the highest number of sperm in the world and that could be the reason why he rejected me as a donor. I told many people that I was sterile and could never have children based on Leland’s «testing» results.
The damaged he caused is the following. He took a sperm sample from me and then he called me into the back room (more like a kitchen) where he had me look into a slide under a microscope that showed nothing moving. I had no idea what I was looking at until he explained to me that it was my sperm. He told me that I had no sperm at all! That meant I was sterile and he was so sorry to have to tell me that. He rejected me as a donor because I had nothing to donate! He even kissed me on the cheek. I was shocked. I went on thinking that I was sterile, period.
In 2008 I told my doctor what happened with Leland and he suggested that we do another test. I did a sperm count test and it turns out that I am not sterile! I couldn’t believe Leland would tell me that I was sterile when it was not true. I thought about our conversation when I went through his screening process and he asked me if I was Hispanic. He told me that there was very little demand for Hispanic sperm as the biggest sperm in demand was from Asians or Whites. He even explained that women wanted tall, blue eyed babies and that was the profile that he needed the most. Did he reject me because I didn’t met the racial profile of his client base or because I was too short and he knew he would have to pay storage costs and he wouldn’t be able to earn money off of my sperm? He is operating a business after all.
I went to Kaiser today and I had another sperm count test and fertility test and my tests came back normal. Sorry Leland, but I am not sterile! I have no idea what Leland thinks he is doing, but he needs to focus on being honest with his donors instead of lying to them and causing them unnecessary stress and sorrow. Don’t believe anything he tells you if you go to him to be a donor. Find another organization that will treat you with respect and will not lie to you. I will make my test results available to anyone who requests them.

So, i havent gone in person but i did request some information through email and i have to say that Leland is very rude. First i asked some information for a donor we found on their website and he replied that that donor was only available for people who met him online. Then i inquired if it was possible to meet him online and Leland responded that he would not contact him to ask if it was ok for us to meet him. Ended up going to Pacific Reproductive Services in SF. WAY better !
I also emailed him about the IUI procedure and what we needed apologizing for the earlier miscommunication and he sent back forms and thats its no nothing! If i was leaving my potential child in the hands of this person i would expect more friendly service from a «lesbian friendly» company.
