Oakland-Alameda Endodontics

Hallelujah! My normal DDS referred me here for a cracked filling turned infection. Dr. Monzavi is amazing! He thoroughly explained what was happening, showed me cool digital X-​rays and explained what was wrong, and gave me the real deal on what will happen moving forward. Odd enough, this was actually pleasant for dentistry. They had headphones that I jammed away to Badhu on, and the doc gave the least painful shots I’ve ever had, I didn’t even feel them. I wish this could be my regular dentist office!

Yesterday I went here for another root canal. (Dr. Nabipour did my first one a few years ago and the experience was just as great.) Dr. Calvert is handsome, gentle, and describes his every move. He stopped during the procedure to check in on me a few times asking if I was comfortable. His assistant, Elise, was so sweet, down to earth and friendly (plus, she laughed at all my jokes). They were so accommodating and there for me each time I’ve come to this place. I highly recommend getting your dreaded root canal here. Oh, and Dr. Calvert called me today asking how my tooth was feeling.

Dr. Calvert — what a gentleman! Walked in today, scared as ever, holding onto a previous harrowing root canal experience. Dr. Calvert, from beginning to end, explained every action he was going to make. I thought I was hallucinating from the laughing gas when after numbing me with lidocaine, he indicated that that was the worst part of it all, when in fact, all I felt was a momentary inconsequential needle prick. In the end, it was so surreal and anti-​climactic, I felt sheepish for being such a wimp. Dr. Calvert has the best bedside manners and sincerity. Thank you for making this undesirable procedure tolerable and pain free. I would recommend Dr. Calvert without any hesitation. Thanks also to Rose, his assistant, for your caring demeanor and flawless moves.

Are there any words more dreaded at the dentist then «you need a root canal»? Not only that I needed one, but that I needed a specialist to do it! How messed up is that tooth? Apparently a lot.
My general dentist recommended Oakland-​Alameda Endodontics. I immediately checked out their reviews and was reassured. Like most people, I hate going to the dentist, especially for something like this. Called and made my appointment and it was a pleasant enough experience.
When I went in for my appointment, the front desk and dental assistant were very nice and professional. Into the chair. Dr. Nabipour came in, took a look around, then some x-​rays. Because of a complex medical condition, he couldn’t do the procedure that day and needed to consult with my physicians. He contacted them, worked everything out and a couple of days later I went back.
Dr. Nabipour got right to work. You know that feeling you get when someone knows exactly what they’re doing? Like a great auto mechanic or plumber? That’s Dr. Nabipour in my mouth. Fast, efficient and painless (except for the first shot).
A bonus is that have great toys. Like the microscope to look at his work, the digital x-​rays, and the headphones and glasses for the patient. Just get the feeling that they want everything to be first class.
A couple of days after the root canal, Dr. Nabipour called personally to make sure everything was OK. No front office person or assistant here. Really first class dental care all the way, If you need endodontic care, these guys are the way to go.

4 years ago, I had a «partial root canal» done by an Army dentist in Basic Combat Training. What the Army dentist failed to tell me was that they never finished the root canal, and instead drilled a big fat hole in my molar, cleaned it, and put a temporary filling in to «temporary relieve the pain» so that I could return to training. I was instructed to come back in 6 months to get it crowned. to which. I never did.
Many dentists (including mines) were surprised the temporary filling lasted FOUR years. Well, a chunk of it finally fell out and I had to put an over the counter filling in to prevent any food in getting inside the hole. My dentist wanted to refer me to his endodontist, but I like to conduct my own research on professionals. I found Oakland-​Alameda Endodontics on Unilocal and found NUMEROUS positive reviews online regarding Dr. Panella and his office. I’m more inclined to follow the latter in terms of good reviews (while also reviewing bad reviews for WHY they wrote the bad review) and I decided I wanted to see Dr. Panella for my root canal.
Upon arriving, the dental assistant was very friendly and professional. I was a little nervous because the room itself looked outdated and reminded me of the ones you see in the movies that make the dental chair look scary. My heart started racing and I was ready to call it quits even though my face didn’t show it. Dr. Panella came in and was very thorough in explaining what happened to the root canal tooth and that the root canal was never fully completed. He also mentioned that because I had left it for so long, there could be a chance it could be infected and «calcified.» OH GOSH. I told myself. The root canal itself took EXACTLY one hour and the only painful thing about the root canal was (1) local anesthesia shot (I HATE THESE!), (2) the clamp they put on your tooth which also forces your mouth open, and (3) keeping your mouth/​jaw open for an hour.
So I would say. don’t believe the hype that you’ll experience NO pain in root canals. The truth is. YOU WILL but you won’t experience any pain by the actual drilling and filing by the endodontist. in this case. Dr. Panella. I took comfort knowing that my root canal was finally being taken care of by a professional who knew what he was doing. I appreciated his expertise and professionalism. The only thing I found was a negative was that Dr. Panella rushed off to the next patient leaving me to ask the dental assistant my post-​root canal questions.
Recovery: At first, there was no pain. But the next day, the gums and tooth felt tender for 2 – 3 days after. I took some 600mg ibuprofen to help with the inflammation and eventually the tenderness went away.
Overall, if I had to do it again (which I’m hoping I won’t), I’d come see Dr. Panella and his staff again.

Dr Dabipour is great. He is warm and friendly even when you are stressed out and in pain. He is also willing to tell you what you do not want to hear. He convinced me to save a tooth that I did not want pulled and convinced me to pull another one that was probably not worth saving when I have coverage for an implant.

Dr. Calvert did a wonderful and painless job on my very first root canal! He is a very thorough, gentle, and calm dentist who will talk you through the procedure and keep you relaxed during the process. Very kind person and will answer all your questions.
I would highly recommend going to Dr. Calvert for any root canal procedures. He works in both the Alameda and Oakland office, I went to the Oakland office my procedure. Great staff as well! :)

I received my first root canal from Dr.Nabipour. It was quick and painless. He was very nice to squeeze me in on a very busy day because I was in a lot of pain.
I did not feel the needles. I was given headphones to tune out. The procedure was completed in less than an hour. Since I was going to travel soon he finished the procedure that day. I was already grateful to be taken in… but now I might as well worship. I sure hope I don’t need another root canal but if I do I know where to go.

Dr. Panella is great.
I came in for a consult and they just went ahead and were able to do my root canal right then and there, no fuss, no muss. It took 45 minutes. It seems that he has done this 100 gazillion times and his calm precise manner made this root canal a walk in the park. They will give you a little radio and headphones and eye shades to let you pretend all this isn’t happening to you. It was fine. I had a 7:45 appointment and was at work by 9:15. Easy peasy.
When I went to work, it turns out that two other people had been to him in my office and had really good experiences as well. We high-​fived to Dr. Panella!

Dr. Jason Calvert was the best today! Who would ever guess I had a root canal 6 hours ago… NOT ME!!! I would highly recommend him to anyone!!! Lily… his assistant was remarkable also. ;-) What a great team to be working on my mouth… a perfect match… calm, gentle, informative, professional and done with perfection!!! Great job Dr. Calvert!!!

I saw Dr. Unes Nabipour. The procedure was painless and efficient — all due to the doctor’s expertise and masterful technique.

Scheduling was a breeze, parking was free/​easy & I was greeted promptly upon entering the office. The receptionist was really nice & she handed me this folder with lots of info about the Dr & root canal procedure, it was a nice added touch.
I saw Dr. Nabipour, He was really nice, friendly & down to earth. His assistant was also really nice but I got the feeling she was new cause while the Dr was working on my tooth I could hear him telling her she needs to get better at «this & that», it was actually a little awkward because I heard it over my headphones & I remember it despite being gassed!
Anyway, there was a series of things I really appreciated, first was the nitrous, second, he did a decent job numbing me up w/​o making me cry… always a plus :) He also used a wedge (something I wish my regular dentist would do) and draped my face with some kind of protecter. He did the procedure through a microscope & was really thorough. The visit took about 90 minutes & when it was over I was given a warm lemon water towel to wipe my face! I have had root canals before, and I was terrified going in, so this experience was a far cry from what I feared & if it ever comes to digging into my tooth roots again… I’ll be going back to Dr. Nabipour!

Dr. Calvert has done three root canals for me over the past few years and it’s been a good of an experience as is possible for a root canal. He explains everything, seems very gentle when working with you, and I’ve not had any post-​procedure problems (and I’ve had root canals from other endodontists where I can’t say the same thing).
Office staff was great. Very accommodating. Easy and free parking in the offices in Alameda and on Pill Hill in Oakland.

Dr. Nabipour was so fantastic with my excitable 12 year old who needed a root canal after busting his tooth. The staff was prompt and polite and the office was clean and pleasant without having that décor that screams Overbilling!
Dr. Nabipour was gentle but not condescending with my son. He explained and even narrated the whole procedure so he’d know what was going on. He was so calm and effective that my son didn’t even need laughing gas — the injections were enough. Previous dental experiences with my son included significant consternation and extra medication to get him to stay calm and still.
We walked into the office directly from our family dentist 2 doors down. Dr. Nabipour was able to see us on the spot and we got our appt for 2 days later, no problem.
Having a root canal is never an appealing thought, but if you have to do it, I recommend this practice.

Dr. Nabipour is the best! I wish that each and every trip to a dental office could be as great as they are here.
Dr. Nabipour is super professional and doesn’t try to talk to you about your day while knuckle deep in your mouth. The other staff there is also nice and very professional.
I have to go in tomorrow to hopefully finish having a botched root canal fixed and while I usually hate/​dread dental office visits, I am actually looking forward to this one.

I never thought having a root canal can be so easy, so painless, and the healing was so easy, with no complications. I took a vicodin later, but maybe did’nt even need it. His staff was also very helpful, and made the paperwork a breeze. With Dr. Nabipour, you can have a root canal during your lunch break, and make it back to work with no problem. He’s very smooth, and simply the best.

He was very kind. He explained things without being condescending. Everything was fast and painless. Thoughtful follow-​up as well.

My tooth is still in good shape — but an amazing thing happened — I got a refund! As with all MD offices they estimate what your insurance will pay and I wrote them a check for the difference. I guess insurance paid for more than they thought, and they refunded the difference before my insurance company sent a statement to me!
Not having to deal with asking for a refund — bumps these people up to 5 stars — good doctor — ethical office practices! YAY

The other day I had to get my first root canal in over two years. I was referred to Dr. Nabipour from my husbands dentist. I was taken in late in the day. I was in serious pain but they could only work on me for an hour since it was already around 5p. m, but they took me in anyways.
I came back to get everything finished a day later and after enduring an hour or so in hell even after pain numbing medication was used. I was in much less pain after everything was finished.
That was yesterday and today my right side is still just a little sore, but I’m almost back to normal. He is good and fast. They accept most dental insurance. I’m so glad that he was able to get me in at the last minute! Although they did a great job, I hope I won’t have to see him anytime soon! Going to any dentist, especially for a root canal is never a pleasant experience!

Not that I really like having root canals, but when i need THREE due to a mountain biking accident, I was recommended to Dr. Nabipour.
All three were quite fast and PAINLESS! He is very communicative, explains the procedure (if you want to the nitty gritty like I do) and has a great personality to boot!
I wish he could be my regular dentist since the entire staff is helpful and friendly, unlike the chick at Berkeley Hills dental who answers the phones.
