The Original Daves Ice Cream

I think the last time I went to Dave’s Ice Cream before this trip was when I was in middle school! Or sometime when I was younger. As a kid, I distinctly remember getting those chocolate-​dipped sugar cones that came with rainbow sprinkles on top and vanilla ice cream inside.
After a recent dinner with a friend at Grace’s Inn, we walked next door to Dave’s. She said she loved this place because of the ube ice cream flavor available. I’m not the hugest ube fan, but I know there were a lot of great flavors to choose from at Dave’s.
Since we went there the day before Halloween, the ice creamery wasn’t crowded … and actually, it looked exactly as how I remembered it to. Some kids walked in wearing costumes, but as a whole, we were the only customers dining in, except for one other family.
My friend was torn between «Ube» and «Kulolo,» but she ultimately chose the latter, since she just had the «Ube» one a few weeks ago. After trying several samples – and much contemplation – I went with the «Hawaiian Mud Pie.»
It’s always nice to visit Dave’s, especially when I haven’t for 10+ years! I really enjoyed what I got; plus, it’s always great to support a local business.
Here’s my take on our ice cream, as well as what I would get next time:
«Hawaiian Mud Pie»: This flavor featured an award-​winning combo of OREOs and coffee. I loved how it was an even blend of both – I enjoyed the crushed-​up OREOs and the coffee flavor balanced it out perfectly. I got a single scoop in a cup, since they couldn’t split two flavors in a single-​sized cup (and I didn’t feel like getting a double scoop).
«Chocolate Cookie Dough»: I love all things cookie dough, and since this flavor involves chocolate as well, I’ll have to try it during a future visit.
«Chocolate Chip Mochi»: I don’t recall seeing this flavor available during my visit, but it’s listed on the website, so hopefully they throw it in the rotation at some point! I wonder if it includes the delicious, chewy texture of chocolate mocha. Definitely interested in getting a sample of this flavor.
«Frosted Sugar Cookie»: I don’t think this is a seasonal flavor, but I actually do like sugar cookies (if they’re not too bland) in cookie form, I’m sure I will like the ice cream flavor as well.
«Chocolate Macadamia»: I love chocolate-​covered macadamia nuts, so I’m certain I’ll love this ice cream flavor. I love macadamia nut flavored ice cream in of itself, but with chocolate, it’s bound to be even better.

So sad! Unilocal said they close at 10:30pm on Saturdays we got their 9:40p & they said their schedules said they close at 9:30p. That’s what my son wanted to eat after his boxing match that day:(someone’s timing is wrongly posted.

Absolute best local ice cream. No questions. My twin sister loves the green tea flavor in a waffle cone so much, it’s become her regular order when we swing by. My personal favorite is the chocolate mac nut. It’s so creamy and the chocolate isn’t as overwhelming as I’d initially assumed. The nuts are a great local touch, reminding you that this is an experience you can’t get anywhere else. Dave’s is number one!

The store was really gross. The ice cream was good, but that is only because it was made off site. If they made their own ice cream I would not eat it.

Who screams for ice cream? I do!
I have been coming to Dave’s for over 16 years and the ice cream has always been the same. Sweet and perfectly balanced with just the right consistency. They have all your standard flavors, but the true fun is trying the unique flavors that Dave’s has to offer. I have yet to find another place that makes great Blueberry Cheescake Ice Cream. The Green tea ice cream is legendary and cannot be missed as well!
Overall, Dave’s is a place that is sure to stay around for a long time. The only negative experience I had was that sometimes the freezers didn’t quite keep the ice cream cool enough. No big deal though.

Craving ice cream. Waited in traffic to eat there. But they are closed. Its 840pm they are supposed to be closed at 9pm

We were at Grace’s and we decided to get ice cream. We tried several flavors. The sugar cookie was the best and we got it. We got the sugar cone because they were the same price as the regular cone. It was da bomb.
Why did I give this 4 stars instead of 5? It’s because they use comic sans for their menu’s, and comic sans hurts people.

Dave’s ice cream is so ono.

I grew up eating Dave’s Ice Cream, and come here every time I’m back on the island. Service here is less than desirable (–1), but I always come back because of the ICE CREAM. Tons of unique island flavors; you can’t find ice cream like this on the mainland. I come in and buy a few pints of my favorites: Green Tea, Lychee, Hawaiian Mudpie. At $ 4.99/pt for gourmet Hawaiian ice cream, I’m paying for the ice cream and not the service so it’s all good.

When in here on a Sunday night. G. P our cashier was friendly and helpful. He talked story with us, letting us taste different flavors of ice cream with no rush. I mean the place in a little bit of cleaning but customer service was awesome. I appreciate that. ‘m/​for sure coming come back to get some ice cream from here now.

I like this place more and more every time! The customer service is good. And I just love the ice cream and homemade waffle cones!!! I went in the other night and they had just run out. So they quickly made me some since that’s what I wanted. I even got two cones one time I went because it was so good I wanted more! Love this place!

I came here on a Monday night and was greeted with an unhappy glare from the worker. I know they close early on Monday… But jeez I came in at 715 lol. I’d expect that kind of look if I came in 10 mins before they closed… Anyway,

The green tea ice cream was ok… The location is pretty good and parking seems fine. Still thrown off by how unprofessional my experience was, at least I was told ‘goodbye’ as I left the store. Lol

I have been coming to this Dave’s since I was in intermediate school. My brother would pack me on the back of his moped and reward me with an icee float when I would help him with his paper route.
One of my most favorite treats in this world is their icee float. The icee here tastes better here than at other stores. It’s very creamy and airy and perfect. I get the strawberry icee with strawberry cheesecake ice cream. The strawberry cheesecake here does not have Graham crackers crust in it, which makes it taste better. I usually pay for an extra scoop of ice cream, which comes out to about $ 8 (large icee is $ 4, each scoop of ice cream is $ 2). When I was In high school, it used to be $ 4. I’m willing to pay the price.
What is funny is that they have an ice cream challenge here. It’s about $ 36 dollars and if you can eat the ungodly amount of ice cream and toppings, you get your picture on the wall of fame. If you lose, your picture goes in the loser section. It’s fun to look at the pictures.
Customer service is hit or miss here, but it doesn’t matter much to me as long as my order comes out right, I just love my icee float that much!

Dave’s Hawaiian Ice Cream is my personal favorite local ice cream maker. I grew up on mini cones, nutty buddies, and bon bons as a young local boy, and have since ‘graduated’ to hand packed pints for special occasions.

Dave’s Ice Cream lives up to its label as a gourmet ice cream. Every bite and flavor leaves you with a full, satisfying feeling. Dave’s selling point is producing unique local favorites, including ube (Okinawan sweet potato), macadamia nut, chocolate chip mochi, among others.
Ice cream takes special form in Dave’s ice cream cakes which are beautifully crafted. These ice cream cakes are ideal to serve parties of 8 – 12, and are best when custom ordered.
The Original Dave’s Ice Cream location in Aiea /​Pearl City serves a wider array of treats, including Icee, shave ice, sherbert, yogurt, and pop corn. You can mix and match any of these treats with Dave’s ice cream, of course.
I’m personally a fan of hand packed pints for flavors which are outside of the norm. Blue cotton candy, pink cotton candy, and frosted sugar cookies will get you through any potluck of children or adults.
If you’re in a rush, you can always pick up pre-​packed pints including:
– chocolate macadamia,
– coconut macadamia,
– green tea,
– hawaiian mud pie,
– lychee sherbert, and
– mango sherbert.
Ever since the Ala Moana Sears location closed, the Aiea and Waipio Dave’s Ice Cream locations have become the best source of their gourmet ice cream. It’s well work the drive from town for these treats, especially if you’re expecting a little more from your ice cream.

something good: my all time favorite dessert that makes me think of little kid times! the lemon custard ice cream… i can’t think of another place that serves this flavor! i love, love, love it! if i lived or worked next to a dave’s ice cream, i would be in serious trouble because i could eat ice cream everyday :) !! this location is cute, i thought the artwork was cute!

Just walked out without purchasing anything thanks to the rude, unwelcoming, sassy girl in the yellow shirt.
Establishments that run with no manager in charge like this are just asking for disappointment. I came here growing up and enjoyed each visit. Clearly the management of this place has lost care for their business or they just need new workers. I didn’t get to satisfy my ice cream cravings today but I’d rather suffer then give a dollar to a place with such terrible service.

While on a trip to the North Shore, my group decided to stop and get some ice cream here, even though there were rain showers getting everyone (tropically) wet. No matter – the appeal of Original Dave’s is that it is a funky place and the ice cream is great!
I got a cone of something or other with coconut in it, as I usually do and it was creamy and delicious. I was totally charmed with the older lady behind the counter. She was a sweet lady, very helpful, although I did have trouble understanding what she was saying. No matter!
Though the premises seemed a little dingy, the cool pictures and tropical décor lent an air of island awesomeness. While traveling on Oahu or near the North Shore, make a plan to stop at Dave’s.

Gotta get some of those delicious sweet. Ordered the ube and green tea flavor. Cost around $ 6. The flavor wasn’t too sweet. I can taste the green tea powdery taste. Ube. couldn’t identify the taste. But it was good. Omnomnomnom. smooth and not too creamy?

You are in Hawaii, it is hot. You want to eat something cold and you look for an ice cream (or shaved ice) shop! Dave’s was the spot for us. Our group was craving ice cream (OK, just me) and we went out for some dessert after dinner.
Walking in the place is pretty basic, white walls, tables, the case, and signs with the flavors. The lady behind the counter was nice, she let each of us try 2 – 3 flavors and explained what the odd sounding ones like kulolo (sweet potato) were. I ended up getting a POG Shaved Ice instead of ice cream since 1. shaved Ice is more Hawaiian and 2. POG is a very Hawaiian flavor.
The shaved ice is just like a snow cone when you were a kid, except I had a huge cup of it. The top was great and the bottom was very syrupy sweet. Unless you have a big appetite you can probably split one of these.
The guys both had ice cream and enjoyed their flavors. We also brought home some green tea ice cream for a friend and she enjoyed her ice cream. Iif everyone enjoyed the food it is a win.

My friends and I went here for some ice cream and for the 3 person ice cream challenge. The employee that helped us must have been new because they didn’t know how to prepare the ice cream challenge. We ended up waiting an hour and a half after ordering it (it also took 30 minutes for the group to decide what kinds of ice cream they wanted to pick for their challenge, and after that, the employee refused to take their order until everyone in the shop, even the new customers coming in, had their orders taken.)
The challenge was supposed to consist of three people eating 36 scoops in 30 minutes (with 3 bananas, 3 cherries, 24 toppings, whipped cream, 3 cones, and your choice of topping). *TIP: When choosing a topping, DON’T CHOOSE GUMMY BEARS. Once they prepare your 3 person ice cream challenge, they put it in the freezer for a while, to make everything more difficult for you. If you choose gummy bears, they will freeze up and be like surprise rocks in your ice cream. Go with the marshmallows, as they’re easier on your mouth. *TIP: Pick flavors that you all can agree on, that’ll taste good melting together.
The container full of the ice cream is supposed to be 15lbs. WELL, once the employee finally found the scale to measure the weight, the scale wasn’t weighted to be able to measure over 5lbs. It felt as heavy as 25lbs, so there was no way to confirm they weren’t sabotaging us… all we knew was that way WAY heavier than 15lbs. You might wanna bring your own scale if you care about the legitimacy of the challenge.
Needless to say, we lost the challenge and didn’t get anything to show for it other than a photo on their wall to announce how we’re huge losers. I won’t lie, the misery was hilarious! We couldn’t think about ice cream for several weeks without getting sick. One of our group members went outside and puked up pink creamy deliciousness immediately after leaving the beloved ice cream shop.
This place is great, don’t get me wrong… they have funny family friendly movies playing most of the time, tasty dessert options, and a dizzying checkered floor… but we did get sorta scammed by our clueless employee.
Other downsides were that the closest bathrooms are all the way across the street, at the park. Also, they only take cards if you’re above $ 10.
