Jay T Kanegawa, DMD

What can i say about Dr Jay that these other people already have? Dr Jay Kanegawa is simply one of a kind and the reason why i have faith in going to see a Dentist now. I have always been frightened about going to the Dentist because i can’t stand the smell of a drill grinding your teeth and the tools that you see that they use would be something they use on Silence of the Lambs or some other Horror Movie. Let’s just say it’s been a while since the last time i’ve visited a Dentist and let’s just leave it at that.
So here i am in August of this year, and i had cracked a tooth. My teeth wasn’t in severe pain but i needed to do something about it. I have known Dr Jay for well over 15 years now and he was a regular customer of mine when i worked at a Fine Dining Restaurant back in the day. Well he always told me to pay him a visit every time he’d come to visit me and i always put it off. It was always that fear of going to the Dentist that made me gun shy but i thought this would be the right time to give Dr Jay a call and see if he could fix my cracked tooth.
So when i told his wife that i was in need of his services, he called me as soon as possible and asked me if i needed this situation taken care of right away. This was on a Sunday when he was closed but he was willing to go back to his office and take of my situation if need be and that’s when i had restored faith in seeing a dentist and Dr Jay Kanegawa was the first person i thought about and i have no regrets at all.
My only regret is not seeing him sooner and i would have never been in this situation that i’m in right now. When i first went to finally visit Dr Jay in person, he hasn’t changed a bit and certainly gave me a lot of heat for not visiting him sooner. What i like about Dr Jay is that he doesn’t mess around and really cares about all his patients. He has a really big following here at his Dental Practice in Aiea and has won numerous awards as well so i know i would be in good hands.
Me and Dr Jay have a lot in common as well as he is a big fan of wine, sake, and good food. We can carry a conversation about food and restaurant’s like we’ve known each other for ages. He tells about Restaurant’s to check out and what Restaurant’s not to go to as well. I really feel at ease when Dr Jay takes care of me and now i look forward to see him every now and then. In that one month i have seen him at least five times already and it’s because of my fear of seeing a Dentist and now i’m paying the price but now i’m gonna pay Dr Kanegawa a visit whenever i have another situation with my teeth or if he thinks something else should be done as well.
Dr Kanegawa’s office is located in Aiea and you can find parking where the Aiea Manapua and Snack Shop is located. If you make an early appointment with him, the parking situation isn’t too bad, but if it’s later in the day, then the parking situation can be quite difficult. Dr Kanegawa’s Office is very clean and well organized for an older office and Dr Jay’s assistants are very friendly and keep you at bay so you won’t have to worry about a thing. Dr Kanegawa has a lot of patients so i am very lucky to be one of his regular patient’s as well.
So if there is a Dentist that you are currently not happy with, give Dr Kanegawa a shot. He tells it like it is and ain’t gonna sugar coat anything. I learned the hard way but at least he was very honest with me. That’s what i like about Dr Jay. Even while working on me, he’s always got a sense of humor and he’s lucky he didn’t get saliva splashed all over him because he made me laugh.

As much as I don’t like going to the dentist, I do like Dr. Jay. He makes me feel at ease — our conversations run all over the place — and he’s got a great sense of humor.
I like how they keep an eye on what insurance will pay so my out of pocket is minimized.
He’s good and if you’re looking for a dentist, I highly recommend him.

Oh, I posted my review under Aiea Family Dental, which I know is another name for his practice. I’ll just copy and paste here too:
Dr. Jay is the best! He’s super friendly and very attentive. He’s a straight-​shooter and won’t recommend needless operations like other dentists. I’ve been going to him for years, as have most of his patients. He’s definitely a local favorite. I think he’s won Best Dentist in the «Best of Honolulu» a few years running now…

More than just a dentist, he’s become a family friend. My family has known him since my Grandfather and Dr. Jay’s father were good friends. He has a great personality and talks to you instead of having pure silence and the sound of the drill entertain you during your visit. It’s a very small office and very family oriented I feel that you get better service here than my previous dentist. I’m pretty sure I’ll be taking my kids here when I’m older providing that Dr. Jay is still gonna be practicing of course. He is very fast and professional and he does a really good job. My teeth feel super clean when he’s done with them. And I feel really bad because immediately after my appointment I make a Aiea Manapua and Snacks run (haha). Of course I catch a lot of crap from him because somehow no matter how long or good I brush, floss, Listerine and whitening strips I do, it never seems good enough.
The only bad thing about here is parking is a pain in the ass here. Because of the dance studio and the anal retentiveness of the nearby parking lots I’d highly suggest making an appointment here are the earliest possible time. Oh and don’t flake out on your appointments (I never do) he does charge a missed appointment fee.
