Freddo Café

Freddo is a wonderful coffee shop owned and run by extremely friendly people. I’ve been here many times now and I’ve never had a bad experience. The Freddo (their signature drink) is to die for. Quite a few shots of strong espresso over ice with a thick sweet foam. I don’t know how they make it, but it is some of the best dessert coffee I’ve ever had. Their baklava is perfectly sweet and nutty. The chocolate cake is dense, rich, creamy, and dark. Just the way it should be. If you’re feeling tea, they always have a few to choose from. I often come here late with friends as they are one of the only coffee shops in all the suburbs to be open till midnight. Because of the lateness, I occasionally get the tea as I don’t want to stay up till 6am on the espresso in the Freddo (no, I would never drink decaf). The café is always very clean, and the atmosphere is friendly and very european. Tax is included in all the prices and you can sit down, drink, eat, and pay later, or pay at the start — however you like.
I haven’t had much of their food (as I said, I’m usually here late), but from the one meal I did have here, it was great. So I would definitely recommend coming here for great coffee, food, pastries, and a wonderful late hangout. Highly recommend.

This is a cute homey Greek café that serves several fancy coffee drinks, but also has plain coffee, hot tea, desserts, and some food items.
I’m not a big alcy drinker and preferred a coffee/​tea tonight post-​dinner. The big chain was closed by 9, but Freddo Café was open until 10. Score!
The owner was a 1-​man show, making drinks, washing dishes, etc. He was friendly and welcoming, asking us if we enjoyed, welcoming us back. He was so sweet to give us cookies with our drinks!
My friend had an iced frappuccino, which he really liked! I had been eyeing a Nutella drink (whaaaa?!), but behaved myself and ordered a plain green tea. It came piping hot in a cool glass mug. Our total was $ 9 before tip.
We enjoyed the atmosphere — it was clean and kind of neat: the coffee-​themed chairs especially! (See Ericka A.‘s pic.) Definitely nicer than that chain I mentioned!
The owner also operates the cigar shop in the same strip mall. If you’re paying by credit card, he has to run over there to swipe. (Whoops, I didn’t realize and feel so bad!)
I’d definitely head back — especially to try something indulgent!

Came in at 1120p on a Friday night looking for coffee and dessert. My cousins and I sit down and no one was in the shop. We sat for 10 minutes and no one came. So odd. We looked around, called out… no one. Very odd. I could have served myself dessert from their cooler but decided not to. I’m not quite sure what was going on so we decided to leave.

Best coffee I have had! Delicious! Not to mention their amazing spinach and cheese pies. Cute décor too.

I had the pleasure of enjoying the best freddo I have ever tasted — by far-​at this wonderful little café. I have been to several places that serve this delicious concoction and never have I been more delighted. I also enjoyed some small cookies and a mini baklava. My friend and I sat on the patio that is adjacent and enjoyed our afternoon of gossip on a beautiful setting with flowers and an ornate fountain. They also offer pastries and lunch items its definitely worth a check out if you’re in the area!

Was looking for after dinner coffee before going to the movies nearby. Small shop but the man working couldn’t have been nicer and the freddo was great. Definitely planning to return to try more coffee drinks, paninis, and the desserts.

This place is a gem. Everything was better than I could have imagined. Got the Greek coffee and a chicken mozzarella ciabatta while my friend got a freddocini with the chicken Caesar salad. Divine.

I left Freddo Café with mixed feelings. Most of those feelings circling around confusion.
I had just gotten done with lunch not too far away, and decided to pop into a local café to fire up my laptop and enjoy a hot beverage.
When I walked into Freddo I saw a young guy behind the counter and a couple other tables full of gentleman. There was a small menu on the wall with hot and cold drinks. I’ve been trying to cut back on caffeine, so I asked if they had decaf coffee. Negative. Alrighty then… caffein it is. I ordered a latte.
I went to pay but the guy said I could grab a seat and he’d bring my coffee out to me. Luckily, this worked for me because I planned to stay for a little while, but what if I just wanted a beverage to go? Things to think about…
Anyways, I grabbed a table by the window and opened up my laptop. Of course I was low on battery so I scanned the walls for outlets. Perfect — located right next to my table.
Shortly after my latte was brought over to me. I again tried to pay and was told I could wait until I was ready to leave. Hey — whatever you say!
I browsed the menu I found on the table and it seemed like they have a decent selection of beverages and café treats. I wish I would have known that menu existed before walking straight up to the counter and finding a small hand drawn menu.
My latte although pretty, was not my fave. It went down smooth at first, but the after taste I couldn’t get over. Not sure what it was.
The café itself is pretty cute. The bathroom though… no bueno. There’s only one and it as pretty dirty.
While I was here not one other female stopped in. It was actually quite odd. For two hours it was only men stopping in and they literally all seemed to know each other. I was beginning to think I might have stepped into some sort of underground club on accident…
If I’m in the area again, I’ll probably check out the rest of their menu. Not in a rush though.

The best coffee ever!!! Have been going here for about 10 years. They are super friendly and love the fact that they are a family owned place!

Great coffee (have the Freddo, it’s out of this world!), freshly baked pastries, good eats, many tasty Greek desserts to choose from. Family owned and operated. Extremely friendly. Open late. What more could you want?

After seeing good reviews from fellow Unilocalers, we decided to have a girls night at Freddo Café. I was caught off guard by two things — that were not in prior reviews:
1. THERE IS A $ 3.00 PER PERSON MINIMUM. I get it, you don’t want loiters. In our case, this was annoying and an exception should have been made… I’ll get into details in a minute.
2. WATER — one review said, they don’t believe in tap. the option was not given. WATER IS NOT COMPLIMENTARY. A HALF PINT (8 fl. Oz.) KIRKLAND WATER IS $ 1.
Now that the surprises are out of the way, let’s begin. Freddo is a café located on north-​east corner of Lake Street and Itasca Street. It’s in an unassuming strip mall with plenty of parking.
We had a pretty large party — about 10 people. When we started to put in our orders, we were all good until a couple people wanted to order food. The barista told us the kitchen was closed because the chef was not in. That was a bummer as some people in our party did not have dinner prior to our coffee date. But no worries — there is a grease joint located at the other end of the strip mall… but then another problem arose, no outside food is allowed in Freddo. (Internal monologue — shouldn’t they make an exception since the kitchen is closed and you can’t get any food?) Whatever, a few people from our party hopped over to the grease joint and joined us after they got a bite.
When the people who went to grab some food came back, the barista shared that there was a $ 3.00 minimum per person. Ummm. Seriously. They WERE going to order food, but your kitchen was CLOSED! That was not our fault. There were only two people who ate at the grease joint. You should have made an exception and waived the $ 3.00 minimum. Whatever. They ordered drinks.
On to the orders — I had a decaf coffee. It came in a 6 — 8 oz. mug. There were no refills. It was $ 3.00. Can someone say, highway robbery? Others in my party got hazelnut gelato, a virgin pina colata, the freddo, a fruit smoothie, and tea. From what I heard, the gelato and the a virgin pina colata were quite tasty. The consensus on the freddo and the fruit smoothie was meh — there’s better to be had elsewhere. Apparently, the tea was outstanding — all you do is add hot water. No skill required so that doesn’t count.
Water — We asked for two waters. To our surprise, we got two half pint bottles of Kirkland water with and two glasses of ice. The barista failed to communicate that these were $ 1.00 each. We only found out when the bill came.
Oh, the bill — The bill was an order slip with all our items listed with the price. Just a list with NO TOTAL. We asked to have the bill split or at least pay separately. The barista said, «We don’t split bill for large parties. Just look for what you had and pay your share.» Fine. We collected money amongst our group.
One more thing — While our group was there, some regulars walked in and started talking to the barista about the soccer game that was on TV. (There’s a TV in the café.) The regular asked about the game and the barista said in an annoyed tone, «I haven’t seen any of the game. It started to get busy right when it started. I haven’t even seen 5 minutes of it.» Dude, you are at work, doing a job someone is paying you for. Why did you sound like you were planning on watching the game at work? If you wanted to watch the game, you should have set your dvr.
All in all, a lack luster experience. There will not be a next time.

I’ve never had Greek coffee (turkish coffee) before, so I gave it a try at Freddo’s — and I loved it!
I came to Freddo’s (Greek for «iced» or «cold») with a group of family and friends coming from a wedding ceremony and we were quickly accommodated by the staff and customers. One man saw our crowd and he immediately got up from his afternoon coffee, gave up his seat, and helped the management arrange chairs and tables to seat us comfortably.
We were served complimentary water bottles and glasses of ice (they don’t believe in using tap, they said), which lets me know that they take their coffee making seriously — fresh water + fresh coffee = a better cup. My family ordered a few drinks and got them in 5 minutes, but our Greek coffees took a little while longer. I tasted my wife’s «Freddocinno» and wondered if I should have ordered the same, but either way I respected the process for this new coffee even if it took a few extra minutes. They told me it was this thick strong cup of coffee, and it was cooked in a different manner, but what to really expect was beyond me.
Flash forward to two minutes later, the manager came from the separate kitchen area in the back and handed me my cup of deep dark liquid with chunks of what looked like coffee beans and oats on top… and I dove in. It was sweet, savory, and a bit gritty, but I at least expected that from the description they gave me of what greek coffee is. I then asked about the process, and after he took care of a few more customers who walked in after us, this dude brought a pot out of the kitchen to show me. It was a small copper/​metallic pot that he throws all of the ingredients in and literally cooks them together until the contents soften and a soupy cup of great tasting coffee is made. I took a risk ordering something new and I loved it. I’m looking to make this at home now!
Oh, and when all the liquid is gone from the coffee cup, there is this coffee residue at the bottom that is just too thick for drinking or eating. Flip the cup over, let it sit for a few seconds to a minute, and flip it back over to look at the dregs! Some see shapes and images in the remnants, they also say it can tell the future. My father asked to take a look at what’s in my cup, and he said «I see something! I see… a knuckle brain nut job looking for signs in a dirty cup!»

I really enjoy this place. It has the feel of a European café that you can’t always find in this area. Drinks are really good, for price you’re probably looking around the Starbucks range, intimate, and one of the few places that you can go for coffee and stay till midnight! The staff is generally nice, I love sitting on the patio during nice weather, on the inside there is music playing and Greek TV going in the background. I’ve had some little cookies there before but that’s it for food for me, but they do have some small desserts and such to munch on. Located in a little strip mall, it can be easy to pass by, but I’d recommend giving it a try!

This place is absolutely amazing! Coffee is delicious. The Balsamic Roasted Vegetable Panini was cooked fresh to order. The vegetables and cheese together is a perfect blend. The Feta cheese and olive appetizer was also fresh and delicious. I must say I left full and satisfied. I thoroughly enjoyed the food. The service was also friendly and impeccable. The gentleman that was working was welcoming and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to try a new coffee house.

I was excited to try this place just from the times I’ve gone to Lovely Nails and saw the super cute, gated alfresco dining area with birdcages along the side brick wall.
Finally was able to stop in Friday pre-​mani/​pedi hoping for a nice warm latte but what I got not-​so warm welcome and a cold?? something??.
There was an older gentleman organizing some pre-​packaged cookies who basically gave a nod as I walked in and then ignore me for a bit. There’s a small list of drinks along the wall to choose from, one is labeled iced drinks, so I assumed the other was hot and ordered a mocha something, and the guy responded «you want the Fredo» and walked away. Uhmmmm. Not in the arguing mood and thinking there might be a language barrier I just went with it. I mean, if the drink is named after the place, how bad can it be?
A separate girl came out from the back to ring me up for that drink that I technically didn’t even order and that was the size of a medium cup from anywhere else but cost me $ 5 (more than even a larger 20oz cup anywhere else), was cold when I wanted a hot drink and my first sip was basically a sip full of sugar and invitation to diabetes. I was defo regretting it until the girl doing my pedicure said I need to stir whatever it was up more because the creamer (I thought it was melted whipped cream) was just kind of pooling at the top. It did taste a bit better, but was still way too sweet for me and not what I’d wanted.
The interior was also nothing to write home about. Pretty dark, dreary, pre-​packaged dessert items and what seemed like way more chairs than there should have been.
I prefer indie shops over big box in general, but next time I’ll probably just stop at Starbucks up the road.

After donating blood and eating a crappy Italian beef sandwich at Franky’s (see review), I was a little bummed and looking for something to lift my spirits. As we were leaving this little business area, my boyfriend noticed the Freddo’s sign and that they had gelatos. Seeing as I never had a gelato before, we decided to stop by.
Since they had a lot of coffee and gelato, we couldn’t figure out if this place was Greek or Italian until I saw the Greek coffee. Got it. I had chocolate gelato and he had vanilla. We sat outside in their patio area and waited for the yumminess. The outdoor area is very nice. Perfect place to come and sit on a summer night and they have beautiful plants and neat umbrellas with lights in them that can be turned on when it gets dark.
The gelato was delicious! Way better than ice cream. It’s definitely thicker, yet tastes lighter than ice cream. Apparently it’s hard to find gelato, so it’s pretty neat that this place is tucked away in good ol’ Addison.
I would definitely come back here. It is very relaxing and a nice café. Old men playing backgammon and having conversations make it feel like you’re not even in Addison. Try it out. You’ll be glad you did.

Me: «You seem pretty cranky.»
My daughter: «No, I am just hungry and I need caffeine.»
Me: «Cranky» (said under my breath) — «let’s check my Unilocal bookmarks for the Caffeine Cruise.»
And once again, Unilocal comes to the rescue. We were early enough for our swanky event scheduled for seven that we could choose a cranky intervention in the form of Freddo Café. Yes, I know, the weakest brother in the Godfather was named Freddo but this great spot is Greek.
Oh, how I wish I had actually used the Rosetta Stone Greek version that I won two years ago. This place was so fun, it motivated me to want to be a diligent student and come back here for practice. There was Greek TV on, all the men comfortably installed spoke Greek and we got to eat baklava.
And there was coffee, delicious coffee to wake us up and cure a bad case of the crankies for one of our party.
Yep, the Caffeine Cruise may have been my best pursuit ever.
