Yeah – this food is coma worthy. Looks like breakfast is the thing here, but I was in a lunchy mood. You go through a line to order your food. While standing there you can see all the wonderful meat choices for the breakfast tacos. I noticed that the relleno plate came with choice of one meat. So I had a cheese relleno with red sauce and some pork tips with a flour tortilla. Sweet merciful crap it was all good. Even the rice and beans were good. Only thing I didn’t like was the tortilla. They need some good thick homemade tortillas. I have no doubt these are homemade by someone, but they need thicker chewier ones. There are two types of rellenos in the world, crispy and puffy. These fell right in the middle. They were a soft crispy and rich with cheese. The red sauce had an ancho thing going on which I love. The pork tips were my favorite. They were tender and juicy with not too much seasoning to get in the way. The gravy had enough thickness to it so that it did not run down the arm while trying to eat it out of the tortilla. I hate it when someone tries to pass grease off as gravy. I still stand by my request for big thick chewy flour tortillas though. So, here’s what you need to know. Go to the spot that says«order here» and there will be a piece of paper listing the plates available. They may have a menu but I did not see it. The meats, eggs and potatoes are laid out cafeteria style if you want a breakfast burrito. After you order, take your ticket and go sit down. Chips and sauces are self serve. Get all you want. Bottled sodas are also self serve. They will bring the food to you. Pay at the end. AND – for those of you who are too lazy to go inside, there’s a drive thru!

This is the only place in Abilene you should be going for your breakfast burritos. It’s a bold statement, I know, but hear me out. I had given up on certain other places in town with their $ 3, cigar-shaped burritos served lukewarm with a 1 oz shot of hot sauce on the side. I won’t mention any names but I think you know who I’m talking about. Mi Ranchito changed everything for me. It was right down the street from my school so I gave it a try one morning. The tortillas were hot and fresh, handmade. Everything was made from scratch, wonderful huevos ala mexicana, bacon, chorizo, and some of the best papas con huevos I’ve ever encountered. I found myself going at least three times a week, often waiting in line when I had just ten minutes to get to class. This place is that serious. The ladies are always so friendly and happy to feed you. The portions are large, and at around $ 2.75, the burritos are an absolute bargain for how filling they are. My go to is potatoes, egg, bean, and cheese. Almost equally impressive is the salsa bar. There is a tremendous selection available and all are made fresh. They have a few milder, more approachable salsas, as well as a few that are truly hot and will have you sweating(which I love). All have bold flavor and are some of my favorite sauces anywhere. I happily gained twenty-some-odd pounds here and I don’t regret it. I’ve recently graduated college and moved away but you better believe I’ll be back to Abilene to visit friends… But not before I stop at Mi Ranchito for breakfast!

Happened upon this little gem driving through Abilene. Fast, friendly service, delicious homemade Mexican plates and burritos. Amazing homemade tortillas… corn and flour. Would definitely recommend this place to others.
