Well, its time to stock up the freezer again, so I wondered around in search of any of the butchers doing any good deals. Not looking for anything fancy, just the basics, mince, chicken, stew steak, chops etc…
I would like to support a local (rather than tesco/sainbury’s etc) butcher so am looking for someone who has good prices but also good quality stuff. That’s when I happened upon W Powell & Son in Boldmere.
I’m sick of supermarket meat and despite all the talk of national belt-​tightening — we seem to have finally recognized that it’s worth paying a bit more for expertly sourced meat from true specialists. They have a stunning display of meat (no carcasses hidden away here), knowledgeable staff, happy to offer cookery advice and there’s a well-​thumbed collection of recipe books on hand for anything they can’t answer. A real gem. Supermarket meat is all well and good for convenience but for some truly special cuts you must venture to the specialist.
