As a traditional pub carvery this one doesn’t really offer anything to shout about, the food selection is limited but fresh. They ensure that the vegetables are replenished so you should have to wait too long. The atmosphere isn’t the best being a traditional pub and offering a range of discounts for senior citizens this place definitely isn’t one for a young crowd. The staff I found to be rather abrasive when met with simple requests like a soft drink with no ice or a white wine spritzer with tonic instead of lemonade or soda. Not somewhere I would recommend unless you are in desperate need of a cheep meal.

Apart from the price and great tasting food, I have to say that I’ve never really been overly impressed with the Plume. Yes, carveries cost much less here than most restaurants, yes, the portions of meat that you are given are very filling and delicious, and yes you get a great choice of vegetables, but I find the whole atmosphere here a little depressing. The décor inside is dark and dingy, and the walls and carpets could do with a change. I’m sure the place is clean, because it is always maintained by the staff, but the old furniture feels a little dirty, especially when you think about the amount of people that have sat here previously. New furniture would definitely improve the Plume for me. To add to the depressing interior, the staff aren’t any more cheerful and on the occasions that I’ve been in, they’ve taken quite sometime to serve me. However, as previously mentioned, the choice of carvery food is brilliant, and you can even have a slice of chicken pie, rather than meat if you wished to.

There’s nothing like a traditional carvery and the Plume do an excellent one for a decent price. They offer every meat you’d want from a traditional carvery and a great selection of vegetables, sauces and deserts. I love their Yorkshire puddings! On a busy day you could be looking at a long wait for your food. I know this because I’ve had to endure a few waits that are thirty minutes or longer; not good when someone else can hear your stomach rumble(yes this has happened to me) However, like the carvery, their food is tasty and I’d recommend their chicken and vegetable burgers. I’ve noticed that sometimes the staff are friendly and appear happy to serve you and some even have a nice chat. Other times it was the complete opposite and it took a while to get their attention let alone interest. So their excellent customer service needs to be consistent. The drinks are fairly cheap but their drought bear is watered down(probably with good reason though.) The outdoor seating area is nice but not that big. They advertise Plume of Feathers as a family friendly pub but there’s nothing for children to do! So they could expand the outdoor seating area into the large car park to involve a small climbing frame.

There’s nothing more I love than a good old British carvery. One of the greatest are Toby Carvery’s, but the Plume do a pretty good one at a cheaper price. They offer four different meats and have a fine selection of vegetables, gravy and condiments to go with the various meats on offer. They also offer an all you can eat ice cream station that is very popular with kids, a great reason to bring the family here. I have a sweet tooth and usually fill myself to the brim with the whipped delights on offer. I came here 14 years ago and ordered a baked potato with cheese. We waited for an hour and when it came it was cold and the cheese had been cut into little lumps because they couldn’t be bothered to grate it. I glad to say that this has now changed with the new plush décor. The waiting times for the carvery are a lot less than their competitors. I’ll be coming back again.

The Plume of Feathers is probably the most amazing value meal you can have in Shirley — £3.59 for a 3-meat carvery! This place is always packed throughout the week yet they always have plenty of meat and veg available! The staff are friendly and efficient enough, the selection of Veg is not up to the same variety of some more expensive carveries — but honestly, so long as your essentials(spuds, carrots etc) are well taken care of then the rest doesn’t matter! And the Plume is good in this respect. Nothing fancy, just a godo quality, cheap solid British Roast Dinner!

They do a good carvery for about £3 during the week and it jumps to more than double that on a Sunday. The usual choice of three meats, potatoes and fresh vegetables are avaliable. The bar staff are friendly. I have never visited of an evening just during the day for a cheap meal but the pub seemed friendly and relaxed

This has changed from a Pub & Carvery to a Crown Carveries. You can pick up a carvery here for £3.25 and the quality of the food is good. The choice of vegetable is ok, not as good as some carveries I have had but for the price you can not complain. I have just seen the information about the Christmas menus and it will be £5 for a carvery and desert in December. Christmas Eve, Boxing and New Years Eve has a special 3 course menu for £7.95 and kids half price. It had advised to book for the days around Christmas. Generally a nice pub to have a good meal
