Head Of Steam

An old favourite of long standing that I’m glad to see is still holding its own.
Handy enough for that last quick one before you catch your train (need to allow a wee bit more time these days due to the station having ticket operated gates now) and small enough to quickly become an intimate space when busy. Toilets on the ground floor too so easy to make use just of those if your passing and in need.
They stock a good range of guest ales and the usual spirits etc. behind the small bar and the staff are generally of good cheer.

The few times I’ve been in (upstairs), it doesn’t seem to have much atmospherejust a student-​type bar, basically. Okay if you’re passing and want a quick pint.

Yes! Awesome for drinks alone or drinks and gigs. The downstairs is a great venue for the massive Newcastle music scene, and if anyone’s half good will be packed out. Great vibe upstairs too, although it does get a little cramped when busy. it’s the kind of place where the spilled beer smell grows as the night goes on, and it’s all the better for it

The Head of Steam is located across from the central train station (hence the name), and is popular with office workers from the area, students, and aging wannabe rockers. The pub is spread over two floors, often only the upstairs is open if no live act is on. The upstairs is not wheelchair accessible. The pub is quite dated and worn, and could do with a bit of a lick of paint. Drinks are cheap, although seating is limited. The pub is still successful despite the condition due to it’s musical heritage, and the reputation it holds amongst Geordie’s for being THE place to see new acts before they become famous.

this place is well situated and always good for a quick pint though not a place to stay for too long. prices are decent but the bands on there are normally poor bands that will never do anything. i’ve seen many a foo fighters tribute act in here.

The head of steam has tons of live music and a great atmosphere. It’s spread over 2 floors, the downstairs is pretty much just a stage and a bar and is where the majority of all the music is played. Depending on the night there’s usually a different style of music, and if you turn up enough your bound to find something you enjoy.

Lot’s of local bands play here in the basement. There are two floors and you’ve either got to go up or down stairs to get to a bar. Not good for wheelchairs. This bar has a late licence which makes it popular at 1am. The crowd here consists of pretentious business men who work in the nearby offices, indie lovers looking for live music and studenty types. The atmosphere isn’t great. The ceilings are quite low and before the smoking ban came into place, this place was impossible to breath in. Now the air has cleared, it’s a bit nicer. I recommend seeing a band here, going to a few more pubs and then finishing up back at ‘The Steam’ as it’s known by punters.

Head of Steam is bang in the centre of town right opposite Central Station. It is mostly popular with music lovers in particular those who love to see live acts. Head of Steam is spread on two floors. Downstairs is a dark small cosy room with a stage at the front, a bar at the back and not much else. This place feels ‘lived in’ and as though it has seen many good nights and heard plenty of great tunes.
Downstairs is where the live acts take place and afterwards everybody moves on upstairs where the great atmosphere continues in a slightly bigger room with tables all round.
The place is raw and definitely has bags of character! Every night tends to host different kinds of music bands/​events, so check on their website before going– there is bound to be something to suit your taste at some point during the week. Drinks are cheap and it’s a great place to stop by on your way out even if only just for a quick bevvy even if you aren’t interested in live acts.
