From the outside this place looked like a promising local Japanese joint. Became concerned when I asked for some sake from the drinks menu to be told they didn’t have any. What sushi restaurant doesn’t have sake… The luxury sushi platter was very basic with ¼ of the plate smoked mackerel. The yakitori were so badly cooked I sent back and the Agedashi tofu was covered with a pile of deep fried broccoli. Only where customers have no idea of what good Japanese cooking is — would this place qualify as such. If all you’re after is beige stodge then you’ll probably be ok. Be warned.

Located on Burton Road in the heart of West Didsbury this sushi house is one of my favourite restaurants on offer in this area. The restuarant itself is rather small, with only six or seven inside tables and two or three outside tables so if you really want to eat here, especially at the weekend, I would suggest booking ahead of time. There’s not just sushi on the menu, you can have your pick of miso soup, raman noodles and meaty dishes too! There’s also a great selection of sharing platters and small dishes so if you struggle to make you mind up you can just order little dishes of everything you fancy. They have a vast drinks menu too, along with the usual beer and wine they also offer their delicious green tea, plum wine and also Sake. I would suggest this restuarant to anyone who loves Japanese food!

Really cute café/restaurant with yummy sushi. That’s all I need to be happy. This is small inside which means it fills up quickly and it’s intimate. Last time I was in a nice Irish couple joined in our conversation about what Japanese beer to order! It was a good recommendation though and I enjoyed their input. The décor is very white with flowers and sushi pics, which I liked . They do good food here. I want to be able to afford a whole sushi boat to myself. This place also introduced me to edamame, thanks! I’ve enjoyed anything I’ve tried here though. The waitress/owner? is really lovely too.

Well, what a great little addition to West Didsbury & Burton Road this is. I went on a Sunday night, but had booked ahead which is a good idea as there are only 6 tables, 3 tables for couples and the other 3 for larger groups. The layout is really comfy without feeling like you’re sitting on top of the people next to you. The menu is extensive, but theres plenty of photos for those who are new to Japanese cuisine so dont worry about not knowing what dish you may fancy. For starters I had Ebi Fry(King Prawns deep fried) that was served with a dipping sauce, and I also asked for some Futomaki Rolls which were possibly my personal highlight of the meal. This is how to do sushi, fresh, tasty and on a small sharing platter for two. Main course I plumped for Beef Yaki Soba partly because I had run the Manchester Marathon that morning and quite fancied the idea of gorging on noodles and beef. On another day though I may have struggled to choose a main, but, thats only because so many of the options look tempting. I’ll definetly be going back again anyway, maybe when I havent run 26.2 miles. The menu can be viewed here( ) just remember, if going on a weekend night it would be best to book in advance

Kimono my house? Don’t mind if I do. Especially if the sushi is this good. Had an amazing meal at sakura house. Ordered the veggie gyosa, prawn tempura and sushi platter and definitely wasn’t disappointed. The sushi was very fresh and good quality. The gyosas were delicious and the tempura excellent. The place is very small with about 6 tables so has a real cosy feel. The service is friendly and the place is family run and authentic. My only complaint is the price and limited amount of choice for the wine but I can forgive that as the meal was so good

We just happened to stumble across the newly opened Sakura House on Saturday night whilst exploring Didsbury. It seemed as though a lot of locals did the same too, as people kept popping in to investigate whilst we were eating, in the hope of an opportunistic free table. Despite only opening three weeks ago Sakura Houses’ popularity is clear, the restaurant was packed but it’s also only 6 tables, which may play a part! Either way we were lucky enough to snaffle a table for two off-the-cuff as there was a 45 minute space before a booking and our waitress was happy to make time and space for us. Due to being short of time we decided to stick to a simple meal each, so we didn’t sample the sushi — which seems to be the main fare. I opted for a comforting plate of pork katsu curry and it was very tasty and freshly cooked, so fresh I almost burnt my mouth on the cutlet! My only issues were that it is currently cash only and that my meal came a good 5 – 10 minutes after my partners — but I honestly think these are just opening month niggles. Sakura House isn’t fancy, it’s an honest little restaurant with lovely staff and I think it’s a welcome and refreshing addition to the area.
