Evans of Didsbury

Their prime business is really as a fishmongers and this reflects my rating because they are excellent and really know their stuff when it comes to fish. So I am giving this place 4 stars although I believe that for the greengrocer side of things they deserve 2 or 3 stars.
The staff are kind and will give you advice if you want to try something new, plus of course they have excellent cooking tips, which when dealing with fish is always welcome. I love the selection of fish, obviously if you just want a bit of salmon they are good for this too, but I would encourage you to ask them what is good, and see what they have on offer each time you visit as this changes the way you eat, and you get to try things you might never of heard of :)

Absolutely superb. Extensive selection of beautiful fresh fish, vegetables, and knowledgeable friendly staff.
Order oysters from here you can’t get better anywhere in the city. They’ll even lend you a shucking knife if you don’t have one. Same goes for a fish kettle if you decide to poach a whopper! Want to make an amazing stock for your bouillabaisse? They’ll give you a bag if fish bits to boil up. Fresh anchovies, shrimp, all types of prawns, fresh lobster (to order), seabass, trout, mackerel, squid, salmon, sole, and premium roe and caviar, smoked salmonmy mouth’s watering.
Just brilliant to have a good local fishmonger. Can’t rate highly enough.

Great grocers and fishmongers. Would buy our fruit and veg in there (when we could afford it, it was a bit overpriced) and the occasional bit of fish, as I don’t like fish much. They were always very professional and polite.

Unbelievable fish mongers. For me it has to be the second best fish mongery in Manchester. I realize that this is just rumour mongering, and we are not supposed to be concerned with any other mongers apart from fish mongers here, but i’ve gone and said it anyway.
The selection here is as good if not better than anywhere else, from fish to crab to mussels and beyond. I’m not saying that the fish mongers in the Arndale Food Court has a better selection, dont misunderstand me. If anything, in that sense, this place has the edge. I dont mean The Edge from U2, i just mean the edge in terms of having a slightly better stock of fish.
However, the aforementioned fish monger in the Arndale is so cheap, that for me it edges it. They’ve literally got fish available for any budget. So Evans is the second best i’m afraid.

There are only two types of mongery about nowadays — fishmongery and ironmongery. And warmongery but that’s not an actual mongery as much as it is a sort of pejorative term for a set of peace-​hating idiots. Come to think of it you don’t get many ironmongers now and you’d probably be more inclined to call them blacksmiths. So fishmongers are the only mongers left now. Back in the olden days — a hundred years or so ago, around the time of Henry the Eighth — you would have got everything from a monger. Just going to Topmonger, you might say, to get a t-​shirt or I’m just off down The Body Monger to pick up some organic soap. Now it’s just fish. I might be more upset by this except that I really, really like fish.
Evans of Didsbury is the perfect place for me then as someone who loves fish and is concerned by the disappearance of monger from everyday usage. They stock a fantastic array of delicious fish — from jon dory (grab some mushrooms from the attached grocers and pan fry the fish with them) to mackerel (perfect grilled with a squeeze of lemon and some parsley) and fresh lobster and crab (neither of which I’ve ever prepared before so have no ill-​advised Jamie Oliver style ‘bish-​bash-​bosh’ cookery suggestions for). For a quick, cheap fish fix I can highly recommend trying their pre-​stuck fish skewers (consisting of a selection of cuts from different fish stocked that day)

The customer service really is excellent here and the knowledgeable staff are happy to make the cuts that you want at the weights that you would prefer and are perfectly happy to recommend the best ways of preparing what you have bought. Really a fantastic little plaice.

Like the nearby Cheese Hamlet, Evans is one shop that I cannot walk past without gazing longingly into the window. Unfortunately quite a few people also seem to share my predicament, which often results in a pile-​up of buggies and pedestrians attempting to cross Barlow Moor Road, especially on Saturdays. The shop is great, but they need a bigger pavement.
Like out of the blue in Chorlton, Evans sells a wide range of fresh fish and is home to friendly and helpful staff. As Angela B. stated they stock pretty much every type of fish you could dream of. And should you have a particular fishy requirement which they are unable to fulfil, then they will order your desired fish in for you. My personal favourite are the fish kebabs which are often on display in the window. Sure, at £1.99 each they are much pricier than Tesco’s offerings, but they are a really good treat for a summer barbeque.
I’ve never bought any fruit or veg here — there are cheaper and more diverse offerings down the road at freshsave, but it’s worth noting that Evans also sell Christmas trees and turkeys in December.

It’s an Epicurean’s dream to live in West Didsbury. Not only do the locals have access to one of the best butchers in Manchester, Axons, but only a few steps further is arguably the best Fishmongers too.
Evans has one of the freshest and largest choices of fish and seafood in the North West. It may only be a corner shop but it makes the best use of every counter and window display, packing in quality Cod, octopus, mackerel, trout; Dover soles; Scottish pollack and John Dory direct from Cornwall, Fleetwood, Grimsby to the Faroes and Shetland.
As well as fish, you can buy your meat and veg here too, although neither resource is as well stocked as a supermarket or the neighbouring Axon’s. Still, I do recommend Evans for Game and Poultry. Free range Chicken, Pheasants, Partridge, Guinea Fowls, Pidgeon, Grouse, Gressingham Geese and Ducks are all available but its the prize winning Copas free range bronze turkeys that have the customers coming here in droves at Christmas. Their home made sausages are worth a shout too.
There’s always at least 2 staff eager to help with your order, whether you need your item skinning or boning, dicing or preparing in any other special way. The fruit and vegetables are mostly organic, although the choice is somewhat limited. Overall though, a great place to get most things you need for a great meal.

On the corner of Wilmslow Road & Barlow Moor Road you will find the most amazing fishmongers! Evan’s of Didsbury has been offering it’s extraordinary produce since the seventies, so it is safe to say they know a thing or two about about fish. They also sell poultry (including Game) fruit & veg… as Chris has already stated, the prices are above those you would find in a supermarket, but the difference in quality is instantly noticeable, even more so when eaten!
The staff will cut your fish or poultry to your liking and they will be more than pleased to help… don’t be surprised if they add some free advice on cooking your purchase.

Story of two halves. The fishmonger side of the business is excellent, my only tip is get there early at the weekend if you want the best (highly recommend the tuna steaks!). The greengrocers side looks very presentable but is a bit pricey. All in all though an excellent outlet!

This place has excellent fish and the fishmongers are brilliant — very friendly and always happy to help you out with whatever you need. They have a wide selection of all sorts of seafood and I can pretty much always get what I want. Prices are fairly high but the quality is much better than most places, so it’s definitely worth it.
Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the greengrocers though. I’d say their range of vegetables and fruit is okay, although could be wider, and the quality is not always great, especially for the rather high prices they charge. Much as I’d like to buy from independent places like this, I have had better fruit and veg from the supermarket.

Here on the cross section of Wilmslow Road & Barlow Moor Road lies the quite marvellous Evan’s of Didsbury.
One of the best fishmongers around for miles this has served the folk of Didsbury (and no doubt further afield) since the early seventies.
The fish is sourced from all over the UK (the M20 area situated some 40 odd miles from the coast) and includes such slippery, fresh delights as Octopus (quite blinking large too); sea scallops (proper looking ones too, don’t be fobbed off with the insipid looking ones you’ll probably find in the hyper/​supermarkets); mackerel; trout; Dover soles; Scottish pollack and John Dory direct from ‘Cornland’.
I bagged myself some of the handsome little scallops (they aren’t cheap as such but value for money considering their quality). They also stock fresh poultry (I pulled a nice, plump looking free range bird again the difference between these and the malnourished, depressed facsimile’s you’d pick up in less selective shops is very obvious and they’re reasonably priced).
Service is second to none (one of the reasons I gave up vegetarianism was because this type of butcher were genuinely warm humans whilst the vegan led ‘gaffs’ were full of bottled up miseryI digressed with generalisations)
Ask the staff to cut your fish or poultry to your liking and they’ll happily do so (chucking in free cooking tips along the way).
The perky guinea fowls and sinuous octopus are next on my list and it’ll only be a matter of days before I’m back there. Slowly but surely I’m eliminating certain items from supermarkets (like meat and fish) that I know I can pick up from local independents but with far greater quality and for the most part cost effective
