The Well

Perfectly nice pub — airy wooden ground floor that isn’t massive — and several benches outside on the pavement. It is definitely gastro-​pubby in vibe and a bit pricey. A 175ml glass of wine is close to £6.50 — £7 at the cheapest end!
Downstairs is a tiki cocktail bar that could be fun for parties, but a bit sticky for my casual evening drink so didn’t explore much.
They do have a cocktail list and some tempting food.

A decent pub in Clerkenwell, probably one of the best in the region, visited again after having brunch there with some fellow Unilocalers a while ago.
Didn’t head downstairs but the main upstairs bar is nice and bright, with plenty of space to make sure that you will find a table. Had the burger there and was nicely surprised with the quality, pink in the middle and went well with the beer.
Just a short stop to have a pint and some food with friends and then onwards to other things but definitely bookmarked if I’m looking for somewhere for a quiet catch up in the future.

It’s a cute little bar and I’ll be back for drinks again, that’s for sure.
When we arrived, we were welcomed in and given one of their espresso cocktails, which was delicious even though I don’t like coffee, which says something about the quality of it I think. Then we were told that they had a downstairs area and we were welcome to head down… so we did.
The downstairs of the Well is a hidden gem in London. It’s cute, quirky, has its own bar and they change the theme of it every few weeks and hold parties. It’s awesome. When we were there, they had a tiki bar set up, with grasses lining the walls and torches dotted around. With the fish tanks inset into the walls, it gave off a cool vibe. I was told that they’re changing to a snowboarding feel soon though so I can’t want to see what that looks like.
It’s very easy to while away the hours in this place. We arrived at about 6pm and before we knew it, it was 10:30pm and we were going to miss our last train home if we didn’t leave immediately. That’s always a sign of a good bar.
Sure, a glass of wine is £9… but if you’ve got the cash and you’re looking for a cool place to set up for the night and have a chat with your friends, this is it.

An average pub in an average location. I didn’t spend any time in the upstairs area however the area beneath is quite small, very dark and, when I was there, very busy. The drinks were nice but the food I tried was below par. The idea of the downstairs area is to have guest pop up companies and while I was there it was Rum Shack — but they had run out of rum! The staff were all friendly but the general atmosphere, location and food wasn’t up to much.

I had a perfectly lovely dinner at the Well. I have walked past this place dozens of times and it always looks busy and cheerful. The décor and ambiance are welcoming and I was positively surprised by the menu, which was intriguing but not pretentious (maybe a bit too long). I had a nice Mojito (offered via Unilocal promotion) while waiting for our meal, which was promptly served. The scallop and chorizo croquettes were a good starter, but the main courses were the highlight of the night. The goat sausage was very flavorful (a bit spicy), the braised lamb was über tender and juicy, and my veal shin (served like pulled veal burger) was highly recommendable. The fig and almond tart was very nice too and while the final bill was a bit pricer than expected, I’ll definitely come back. Great staff too.

The Well is a really lovely venue where the staff are lovely and the atmosphere buzzing.
The basement has some amazing names hosting pop-​up restaurants and bars so well worth keeping an eye on their website to keep in the loop.
The house white wine was delicious, far better than most we have tried!

The Well is, well, good.
A classic pub with an unusual take on things they do. The last time I was there, we did boozy brunch bingo. And it was excellent (and they do it on the first Saturday of every month, so check it out.)
But beyond that, The Well is quality. I’ve only been here for breakfast but the food is well made, delicious and well prepared. The rest of the menu looks excellent as well. They brought out mussels when we were sitting there and the whole place smelled like delicious cream sauce. Mmm.
It’s a little pricier than maybe your normal pub but you get what you pay for and what you pay for is a quality experience.

This place is about a 10 min walk from Angel Stn, so a nice way to build up your appetite.
We were their for the monthly brunch bingo session which i highly recommend.
We opted for the £15 bottomless brunch option where you get to drink as many mimosas, wine, prosecco or bloody mary in 2 hrs bearing in mind it was about £7 for a glass this is a very good deal. We had a selection off their brunch menu to sample with the others on our table
blueberry pancakes with bacon, eggs benedict with soft shelled crab and the bacon version, advocado on toast.
The bingo caller has us laughing with his take on bingo calls — rathe risqué so perhaps not for the sensitive/​easily offended souls our there. We found it an absolute laugh especially with the free flowing mimosas the calls ranged between listening to music to work out the number, a mathmatical question where the first person to answer won a shot to the bingo callers funny quotes. One line won you a cocktail of your choice and a full house £50 tab. On the 2 bingo game the pot went up to a £100 bar tab.
I will definetly go back with a group of friends as its a great way to spend a leisurely sat.

The Well is part of the well established ETM group, who also owns pubs like The Gun and The Botanist. For this reason, you can be guaranteed a pretty solid experience whenever you visit.
Personally, I really like it for drinks on Friday or Saturday as it’s small, intimate and it is always pretty easy to get a table as this area is a bit quieter on the weekends. I’ve tried the food a few times and it is always ok, but is definitely overpriced. If you are eating, I would recommend the kilo pot of mussels which is their signature dish. There are better ‘gastro pubs’ in the area like The Wilmington, The Eagle or Jugged Hare (which ETM actually own too)
The service is good, they have a nice wine list and they serve ‘Old Engine Oil’ which is one of my favourite bottled stouts.

Had such a great experience. Visiting from The United States so we relied on the staff’s opinions… And they were great! Ordered the steak and it perfect! The drinks and desserts were just as great! And the staff was just so friendly and

Smallish café style gastro pub restaurant in Clerkenwell serving simple well cooked food. I had the steak and chips!
Service is ok but I think you need to come here when they have an «offer on» otherwise it could turn out to be rather expensive for what it is.

I came here with two friends last night because one of them had a Tastecard, which offers a 50% discount here on food, and it seemed like a nice gastropub. I also found out later that it’s a sister restaurant to the Jugged Hare and The Botanist, two other nice bar/​restaurants that I’ve visited in London. To our luck, it also happened to be Tuesday quiz night starting at 7:30 pm, in addition to the daily happy hour from 5 pm to 7 pm… what’s not to love?
We were meant to meet at 7 pm but I arrived a few minutes early and was able to snag the 2-​for-​1 happy hour special on cocktails, and they have to be two of the same so I went with a peach mojito that went down easy but was most likely very light on the alcohol. We were seated at one of the tables on the first floor, which looks a lot like a restaurant than a pub of any sort. There are about 10 – 12 wooden tables and they are well spaced out, so it has a very rustic, relaxed feel. In the basement, they have a modern-​looking bar area that is well lit with aquariums and which I don’t think serves food… very different vibe, but there were quite a few groups down there too.
As for food, we went to town on the array of seafood available on the menu, all of which were 50% off with our Tastecard. So I got 6 raw oysters (normally £13.50), and my friends ordered the pint of prawns and the roast scallops, all of which were amazing. The one thing to note is that the prawns are served cold and with mayonnaise, two things I am not used to, but it was a very generous serving and I loved that it was actually served in a pint glass.
For mains, my friend and I ordered one of the daily specials, which was monkfish served with risotto, and the other friend ordered the venison daily special, which was served beautifully rare with mashed potatoes. The monkfish was perfectly tender and the risotto had bits of chorizo that gave a lot of flavour to the dish. I was very impressed with the standard of the food… clearly this place is more gastropub than pub!
At 7:30 the quiz night started and it is £2 entry per person, with 2 rounds of 20 questions and a very chatty, friendly host. There are prizes for the best team name (free shots), the runners-​up (don’t remember what this was), and the winning team (£100 tab), and there were only 7 teams that night. The questions are fair, not impossibly difficult, and one team even got ²⁰⁄₂₀ in the first half. If memory serves, they won with 37 or 38 points out of 40.
All three of us enjoyed the evening immensely and can’t wait to come again. Such great value and a lot of fun. This place is a great find.

This was the only other gastro pub open on at Sunday noon on this quiet street near City University London. They offered the usual Sunday morning brunch and Sunday roast, but I opted for something lighter as we had a full day of lectures today (!!). My friend had the tortellini while I went for the Scottish salmon fish cakes. The waitress who was really friendly noted both were of small portions, seeing many others dining ordered the much substantial Sunday roasts. My salmon fishcakes was really nice, the poached egg with spinach complimented with the chive sauce was perfect. The ambience is great, not busy compared to other gastro pubs you may encounter in other busier parts of the city. Would definitely return to try their other meals. Highly recommended.

I’d definitely recommend this hidden gem! Not the easiest to get to but so worth it.
I visited with two friends for a nice Sunday lunch. The website recommended booking but it was really quiet. I’ve heard it does get packed though so do book to avoid disappointment.
The staff were very friendly and the service was quick enough for us to not get hungry waiting but long enough to know the food wasn’t being microwaved!
We each had a starter and a main course and we couldn’t fault the food, except maybe that it was so tasty and the portion sizes so brilliant that we didn’t have room for dessert! My friends both had scallops and chorizo starter then the venison pie. I was a little jealous of the pie as it looked amazing and they said the meat was really tender. I had the goats cheese and spinach tart followed by roast belly pork. Delicious! The portions were so big that some of our veg was served separately but I definitely wouldn’t complain. The crackling could have been better on the pork but overall it was superb.
It’s a little pricey but I’ve paid the same at other places for less food and not as good quality so this is worth it. Plus we had a taste card which gave us 50% off making it a real bargain.
If you love good wholesome british food, especially meat and seafood then I’d recommend The Well.

I had the mutton shoulder with creamed polenta — so nice. Then the banoffee pie. Excessive calories well deserved.

The food is bloody good, and you won’t be complaining about the prices once you’ve sampled your potted kiln roast honey salmon, pear and walnut salad. Lots of fresh fish and sea food on the menu amongst other meatier options. It’s so nice to find a decent gastro-​pub that doesn’t reheat frozen microwave dinners to serve to customers.
Sit upstairs in the more traditional, rustic-​timber-​laden dinning room, or head down to the bizarre underworld of red-​leather stools dotted around circular coffee tables and… a fish tank…

You should book here as it gets quite busy, and I can see why! This gastro pub style joint is very popular. Most items except lobster and high end dishes are available on the Taste Card. The chef clearly cares about his work and presentation with every dish looking as good as it tasted.
The front of house staff are very friendly, however I feel they were lacking one additional body. There were times we were kept waiting for attention.
I will come back here, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Booked here for Sunday lunch to celebrate a friend moving into the area. It’s pretty swanky pub…
We got a bottle of wine and a few beers. The house red wine was nice and light. I shared the chicken terrine starter and it was lovely. The chicken was very flavourful and the accompanying sauce was a great compliment. We got a bowl of their rosemary bread which came out warm and it was very nice. I had a nibble of the shrimp croquettes, which were also nice.
For main I got the beef Sunday roast. The beef was very tender and I really liked that they gave a small jug of additional gravy. The Yorkshire pud was light and fluffy and the roast potato was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I really enjoyed the seasoning on my carrots and the cream sauce on the backed cauliflower was nice. Service was friendly as well.
It came to about £35 per person, so if you want to go for a Sunday roast on a special occasion, this is a great option.

My local literally opposite my house. Pricey but the service is excellent and food simply outstanding. Attracts a variety of different people and is reasonably busy throughout the week and weekend. Lots of excellent competition in the area but if food is the most important variable then this pub is for you. If you don’t lick your plate clean after eating their fishcakes knock on my door and i will gladly show you how its done!
If your a large group looking for more of a rowdy session I would suggest the Crown or Slaughtered Lamb which are all within 200m. Don’t take that as meaning you cant get drunk here though as you can… your really really can!!!

Came here for a business lunch, and it was very nice.
I used to live in this area between 1996 and 1999 and of course, everything has now completely changed including this pub.
I opted for the breaded Veal escalope, and then laughed as it arrived as what I am now very used to being a Wiener Schnitzel something I eat at least once a week now I live in Germany!
So, a very good place to meet business or pleasure. Recommended.

«Das Well» ist zwar nicht in der Stadt Mitte, aber auf jeden Fall wegen seiner Fischauswahl empfehlenswert.
Vor allem die Prawns und die dazu servierte Mayonnaise. Hier kann man nett zum Lunch kommen, aber auch abends.
Die Preise sind für London okay, das Ambiente schlicht und gemütlich.
