The Members’ Room might be my favorite part of the Tate Modern and made it completely worth joining. Not only does it permit exclusive access to members and their guests, but it faces St Paul’s Cathedral, quite possibly my favorite landmark in London. The service is excellent and there is an outdoor area, which will be fun in the summer. It was quite busy for a Sunday afternoon, but it wasn’t terribly difficult to get a table. Being able to sit there and witness the sun set over the river was just really pretty and unique. I cannot wait to come here again.

Overrun with breeders and their spawn. It’s basically a crèche. Terrible coffee too.

l don’t see what the big deal is really. when we arrived early Friday evening, the place was packed. There was no where to sit, the room was packed full of people and it just looked like a smaller café. In no way did going to the members lounge feel special or exclusive, as it’s supposed to be a great benefit of being a Member. We ended up leaving and sitting out on a step in the main museum to have a rest. Not particularly impressed in this instance.

Paying an annual membership to Tate Modern of course means you’ll want to make the most out of it. After checking out the galleries, pop up to the fifth floor and flash your card for access. Two terraces; one with a fab view of St. Pauls and the river, one with a view of the Shard and not much else. Food and drinks are cheaper then you would expect. £3.50 for a Camden Wheat beer served in an oversized glass. Cakes looked dry and salad bar was just leftovers so gave them a miss. Went on a Sunday loads of mums and buggies and a few posh folks settled in for the afternoon. I think to make this 5 star Tate should look at the food menu and display I’m sure members’ expect special treatment! Maybe restrict the age(or height of entrants with a measuring stick on the door!).

Hell. On. Earth. This has the potential to be a really nice place to hang out with a book, or work quietly on a laptop with a coffee, but instead it’s always a jamboree of screaming newborn babies and giant buggies. This is a total joke, we can’t stay here, remarked a friend of mine when we walked in the other Friday afternoon. I don’t know why new parents are so drawn to the Tate Modern for a day out Or why they let their offspring run riot in galleries often showing work that is meant to be profoundly contemplative when there are clearly defined child-friendly spaces in the building. But I digress If there was an adult’s only member’s space here, it would be a roaring success.

The Members Bar at Tate Modern must be the best member’s only bar in London. Even if you hate the Tate(who could?) or only visit London a few times a year, pay the annual membership fee, and get the best view in London, and a bottle of wine with a plate of olives for under £20.00. There is one minor downside the place becomes a crèche at the weekend.

Being members of the Tate, the members room does offer some retreat from the crowds and also has access(on clear days that aren’t windy) to outdoor space for a quick smoke. Down side is, it’s very bland in style. You’d think being the Tate Modern, the members room would be a bit more artistic, fun, funky. It basically looks like a canteen. Service is fine, but I give it such low marks because you’d expect a bit more from a members room. And way too many baby buggies in here. Just when you thought you’d escaped the crowds and tried getting your head around the exhibition art you’ve just absorbed, you’re bombarded with baby buggies.

Its a nice place to get a good view and cheap tea, try avoid the times when trust fund mums bring their kids and it transforms into a crèche ala its grim up North private eye

Didn’t eat here, nor did I drink(alcohol) here. Instead, I got a coffee, and sat with the member who brought me here by the window, attempting to sort my head out after a weekend of boozing. The view was fantastic, even though it was raining, and we got there a little too late in order to indulge ourselves for more than 40 minutes. Still, the view was fantastic, and I’m really glad I was brought there. It’s a perfect date place, for sure, and I’ll bet the sunny days are amazing here.

A while ago, I had a date here with a very dashing man. It was ill-advised, rather exciting and the entire relationship lasted no longer than 24 hours. I’ve not been back to the Tate Modern Members room since, because I’m not a member. But I did enjoy my date. Even if sitting out on the terrace was a bit shivery. A decent bottle of Vioniget was £15(yes, I chose the cheapest, Mr Wine Expert didn’t say a thing), but it’s not cheap here. That said, you come here for the view and not much else really. They can charge what they like as long as people want to sit on that terrace. And it’s fun, but the terrace is actually quite small. Not very cosy once everyone decides to pile onto your table(way to ruin a date), and if there’s a bit of a breeze, not nearly as fun as you’d imagine. But the wine is good, the view is pretty and if you’ve remembered to bring a jacket, you’ll stay here much longer than you should.

I loved coming here when I was a member — a very chilled place to be and if you are skinter than skint, no one will say a word if you only drink the complementary ice water while reading or daydreaming. The terrace on the St Paul’s side is usually quite full but the terrace on the other side, while the views are not so fab, is often empty and is a good place to soak up some afternoon sun. The member’s room gets busy during lunchtime and very full on weekends but if you want a nice place to chill during the week this is a good place to go.

The one distinct advantage the Tate Modern Members’ Room has over the other restaurants and bars at the museum is the view. A good view from the top of a tall building is hard to come by, so having a cup of tea out on the deck on a nice day is a real treat. Food and drinks aren’t very expensive either, but also aren’t anything very special or out of the ordinary. And of course, it’s completely packed on the weekends, so if you get in you’ll have to search for a table. But if you can snag one of the comfy sofas or nice slightly reclined seats, you only need a good book and a drink to pass the afternoon. If you don’t want to pay the fee for a membership, make friends with a member quick!
