Sugar Cane Bar

I’ve been here a few times and each time it’s been good.
They do these fishbowl/​boat things which are basically just massive cocktails with straws. Good for for your night out, not so good for germs/​your liver!
There is a downstairs which can get quite rammed and it’s a little small meaning it gets a little sauna-​y but I like the venue and when I was here last week and one of my friends passed out in the corner, the bouncer, though he threw us out, was relatively ok about it and didnt get too arsey which is good in my book!
Anyway, I imagine I shall be back here a few more times in the near future :)

First time I had been here as I had seen it before whilst driving past.
The decorum is very much that of a tiki bar, which is different. They have a good range of cocktails on their menu but what I really liked was the fact that I was able to ask for a cocktail which was not on the menu and they said they could do it no problem. How many times have you been to bars and asked for cocktails and they stare blankly at you well not in here I am pleased to say!
The bar seemed especially popular with groups of women who I assume were all coming in for after work drinks. The food menu is limited but they do a ‘meal deal’. Whereby you get a cocktail and either a burger or a chicken meal all for £9.50. Which in today’s climate is not bad at all. Alright the food is nothing spectacular but I think in terms of soaking up some alcohol the food most certainly does the job. I especially like the fact that you can go to the bar order your drinks and they will bring them over to you, although on a busy evening that must put some delay on getting your drinks but I guess it keeps the bar area clear.
The little booth areas they have look to be very intimate, if you can get one, and all the other seating areas are comfortable. Now whilst the music played was varied I’m not sure it went with the theme of the bar as it could flit between 80’s, 90’s and then the next song was bang up to date, each to their own I guess.
I will revisit the Sugar Cane Bar as it was a quirky place to find in Clapham Junction and sometimes we all need a little bit of quirky ;0)

I loved everything about this apart from the music. It seems weird making your tiki bar look awesome and serving amazing drinks, and then sticking on Shania Twain and Rihanna… yeah. could do with changing that. It seemed to get a bit studenty as it hit about 8pm. lots of loud obnoxious ‘lads’ about, which I usually seem to be able to get away from in tiki bars. but whatever! I still liked it.

Ah the Sugar Cane. Been here a couple of times, but whilst a cool tiki bar with excellent (and recently renovated) décor, I find it lacking in soul.
We stopped by for their Happy Hour, but beware: the sign says a generic ‘cocktails: two for one’, but we actually found out the hard way that there are only a select few cocktails that are actually 2-​for-​1. I got a little upset and said that they should make it a little more clear, but the bartender didn’t appear to be at all bothered.
The food is so-​so. Bar snacks and light nibbles.

came here with a group of friends on a saturday night. to be honest, the crowd and the music wasn’t really my thing — lots of 30^th birthday nights out and people in fancy dress dancing to commercial pop, but saying that, we still had fun so it’s all good. the cocktails were pretty tasty but fairly expensive for what they were. after drinking lots of rum and fruit based joy cocktails, having a mojito was boring!
the only other thing is that the woman in the bathroom (i hate bars that have these, totally do not agree with them in the slightest) was extremely rude to me. she gave me into trouble for putting the toilet seat down — actually full on shouted at me. shut up, lady, seriously. and it wasn’t a one off, she was obviously just a big grump as she also shouted at my friend (we didn’t go together so she didn’t know we were friends!) for flushing toilet paper down the toilet…
i know it sounds silly but experiences like that really put me off going back to a place. please work on your attitude lady in the bathroom!, i just want to pee, i do not want to be moaned at by you.

not a bad place to go for a quite drink during the day. Prices are ok, at night it gets a bit too cramped inside. Décor is nice and staff are friendly, would probably recommend it to a small group of mid 20s but probably no older or younger, wouldnt be your scene.

Great venue in terms of deco, you don’t feel in Clapham but rather in some beach in the Caribbean.
I organized my birthday there, and I have to say it’s one of the only places in town which did no ask for minimum spend or room rent.
The staff was also very helpful and flexible in letting us bring our own cakes and sweets and serving them.
The drinks are good, especially the «Sharing is Caring» ones, although they contain much more ice cubes than actual drinks.
The food is also good, and the sharing platters are good value for money, veggie and meat alike.
However, the music is slightly too monotonic and commercial, but this may change from night to night.
Overall a pretty good place to go to, even though it’s a long way…

It was heaving on a Saturday night. The cocktails were made to a good standard which is a minimum requirement when they are nearly 10 pounds each. We were in a large group for a birthday where the staff helped cater our cakes, so kudos for their help. The only food ordered were lamb skewers and I can vouch for that.
The reason for 3 stars is that downstairs they only managed a premixed CD and no DJ! This is a travesty… so not as many people were dancing as there should have been.

fun if you’re looking for a tiki-​riffic night out. good cocktails — big menu of them as well. a fun place to have a birthday or something (that’s what i was there for.) not super crowded. was able to get to the bar pretty easily. they had music but only a few people were dancing. would go back.

Sugar Cane in Clapham was decorated by the masterminds behind Mahiki, but unlike Mahiki drinks are a quarter of the price. They certainly don’t hold back on the rum and for less than a fiver we were knocking back some serious rum-​filled concotions during happy hour. The place can get busy as you would expect for such a fantastic price and therefore you may need to book in advance.
The food is great value and seriously delicious, I recommend both the camembert and the pineapple kebab skewers which I could have eaten all night.
The décor in this venue is fantastic, think big Easter Island heads and the kind of wicker chairs that make you envision that you’re the head of an important Polynesian tribe — I can’t get enough of this place!

Incredibly incredibly rude door men. I was made feel stupid with my friends for seemingly no good reason. If i am to be treated with such unecessary vulgarity, i am happy myself and my friends never got past the door man

Sugar Cane do food and drink but I’d say this place is definitely recommended more for it’s cocktails. I used to live close by and have been in here a few times with friends and my boyfriend as I love cocktails and cocktail bars.
The Sugar Cane Punch and The Island Princess are both my favourite cocktails here. I really recommend them! There’s the Zombie two but seemingly you should only drink a maximum of two as they are pretty strong!
The prices are pretty high with you paying around £8-£9.50 for a cocktail, so you can imagine after 3 or 4, you’re left with little cash in your pocket!
It’s a really cool night out with the staff being pretty friendly too, a totally brilliant cocktail bar on Lavender Hill, it’s awesome.

When we finally made it to one of the newest tiki bars in town it was on a nice quiet Sunday afternoon. We eagerly devoured the bar with our eyes, making mental notes of the tiki statues and lean-​to style compartments in the seating area.
Cheekytiki, the renowned designer of the infamous celeb spot, Mahiki also designed the interiors of the Sugar Cane, and it’s a job well done!
Not too familiar with Clapham for going out in, I was a little surprised at it’s location, on a remote part of Lavender Hill, with just a few charity shops and a kebab place for company, and I wonder whether this is one of the reasons for it’s emptiness. The Australian barman, our host and friend for the evening told us that on Fridays and Saturdays it was rammed, and I can well believe him! Downstairs there is even a cloakroom, a little surprising for a venue of this small scale.
Unfortunately we didn’t get to sample the food as we were told the kitchen is closed on a Sundayone of the contributing factors to our raging hangovers the next morning!
The music when we visited wasn’t too bad, but it was the same compilation cd with a couple of AC/​DC and Guns n Roses tracks. When I asked the barman if he had anything else he said this was the only cdvery disappointing (although I do like that stuff). By the looks of the flyers, I would hate the music on a Friday and Saturday night, mainly RnB, Hip Hop and Urban sounds. This is NOT what I want to hear at a Tiki bar. Why do they always ruin it with the music?
Some well chosen Exotica and Rock N Roll, would turn this little gem into a cult haven, a bit of Link Wray would go down a treat with the real tiki crowd, not the wannabes who think a tiki bar is where they’re most likely to get pappedyeuch.
The Cocktails were beautiful. There is a happy hour from 6 – 8 Sun-​Thurs, and the Pina Coladas were 2 for 1.
Die hard Tiki fans will be disappointed at the lack of true tiki cocktails, but I feel that the cocktail menu is very creative and interesting. The MUU MUU, although very girly was a pleasant mix of rose and lychee and rum.
I’m sure my OH had a Suffering Bastard and a Zombie, but they aren’t on the internet cocktail list.
Whilst we were there, we bumped into an American who was on an 8 week tiki bar trip. He was over for the London Luau, which sadly had been cancelled after he’d booked his flight. We were very jealous as the barman gave him a tiki mug from the bar but it was the last one left!
I think there are a fair few things that I would do if I owned this bar
A rock n roll, exotica and lounge juke box for starters would be fantasticRnB and Hip Hop do not a tiki bar make.
Next I would commission Cheekytiki to make some special souvenir tiki mugs, which you would have to pay a deposit on (like what they do in the Statesyou pay the deposit, and keep the mug) I say this as the barman said how so many had been stolen.
I would add some true old style tiki cocktails onto the list and get a polynesian menu, as there is nothing extraordinary on the one they have at the moment, although I’m sure it’s very nice.
Ohand get some advertising! We thought this bar had only been open a few months, and it had in fact been open over a year! If the owner doesn’t up the ante, I fear that this lonely bar on Lavender Hill may disappear into obscurity for good.
