Very nice, very very nice– a pleasantly buzzy atmosphere, good quality«modern British» cuisine, in reality meaning borrowing Mediterranean and a few Asian and North African motifs. The claim that all produce is from Cornwall stretches credulity somewhat– I doubt the olives that are relentlessly upsold hail from Kernow– but there’s so much else to enjoy. It’s tough to beat the set menu price(£11.95 for three courses, 12 – 7 pm), but the menu boasts lots of good, seasonal produce — lots of fish and lamb in July. Sea bream and pork belly were both good, the latter featuring a very fash broad bean purée and watermelon salsa. The wine list is a bit odd– and, perhaps uncharitably, I wonder if it’s a bit overpriced, but boasts some interesting Lebanese and Portugese oddities. Not a good range of spirits, tho’ — I’d suggest more gins, but that’s just me.

Despite being a smallish location trying to cope with our large group they managed very well. To begin with they explained how many of each dish they had available to ensure hopes were not raised and dashed. The food was very nice along with a good selection of beers I hadn’t tried. I would check the menu before you go as whilst tasty some may find some of the dishes acquired tastes or have ingredients which may not be to everyone’s liking. In all though great food and a pleasurable experiance.

Good food but a la carte pricing which i find a terrible new practice. Would you like bread? — Sure… well they’re not that great because they’re still trying out recipes but that will cost you 3.50 for our experimental bread. No bueno. Would you like olives? — Sure. Its olives and onions in a vinegar dealy… again, it felt like it wasn’t a polished starter that customers have to pay for even if its not entirely perfected because they’re still trying things out. I had the chicken which was of nice portion and it came with some greens. If you want a complete meal as in a starch, a veg and a protein then you’ll need to order another item. I just find this so annoying. Just give me a meal. A solid meal without having to pick and choose everything and then to tally up all the items after if you’re splitting the bill. The food was good, the pricing was annoying, and the ambiance was nice and the staff was great.
