This is the second of Mr Suchard’s places, the first being 3 minutes walk away on Tooley Street. This used to be an old pub on the corner of the now very fashionable Bermondsey Street. Much in the vein of the now departed Jim Thompson’s chain, this is a pub that sells Thai food, only without the style, the beer, or possibly even, the food. The imperial platter was a bunch of different appetisers that you just know travelled from supermarket freezer, to restaurant freezer, to deep frier, to the table. The singapore fried noodles were bland and sweet, the yellow curry was quite spicy but sweet, the green curry was mehhhh and sweet. They really should stop putting sugar in everything, it just ruins it. If I’d wanted a sugar rush I’d have eaten Frosties with honey on them! The service was disinterested and mediocre, there is no real beer despite advertising itself as a free house, the interior is thoroughly uninspiring, not bad, but uninspiring, the lighting was reminiscent of a chip shop and I’ve had better food from take-aways at half the price. I don’t remember the first Suchard place being this bad, but really, if you have ventured 200m or so from Tooley Street to get here, keep walking and find somewhere else on über chic Bermondsey Street.
