Decent lunch spot. Kind staff and cozy atmosphere. We enjoyed our food. Fish and chips were pretty good, as was the veggie pie. This was my first pie, so I cannot compare, but I enjoyed it. He has had both better and worse fish and chips. Prices were pretty good too. And of course we enjoyed the beer.

An unplanned social with a group of friends and one suggested Nicholson’s Freehouse. We ended up upstairs in the quite restaurant that only had 2 other tables occupied. The barman was friendly and was very professional. After I had ordered but before I had paid a drunk customer came up and interrupted me to talk to the barman. It was obvious that he wouldn’t let me carry on. The barman apologised and informed me I could pay later when he had dealt with the other customer. He then came up afterwards to apologies once more. All my friends ordered different things, from just pints to 2 course meal to my order of brownies. Each order was devoured with out complaints. We would definitely go back there again.

The pub has a bar area downstairs and small restaurant space upstairs. It was one of those places you kind of just stumble upon while you are exploring the area. The waitress was friendly and the menu had plenty of good options, but I did the touristy thing and ordered the fish and chips with the mushy peas. I wasn’t disappointed. It was simple, fresh, and exactly what I was looking for at the time.

Can’t go wrong with the fish and chips. Served piping hot. Simple. Crispy and very fresh, just what you’d expect. Great service too.

Just arriving to London earlier this week, I wanted my first meal to be «traditional» fare. My friend and I stumbled upon this pub after wandering and searching for a restaurant in the area that didn’t require a long wait as we were also headed to a show. We sat upstairs in a cozy traditional very small pub setting. I don’t typically indulge in a meal of all fried food… but«when in London»… The service was extremely friendly and I enjoyed my first meal in London of traditional fish and chips served with mushy peas!

Nice vibe, and Hubby’s Sausage & Mash looked appetizing. But I ordered the Cheese & Chutney Sandwich. Um, yuck. I expected a gooey, bubbly chunk of cheese melting with sweet chutney. But, nope. Shredded cold cheddar. Gross. I stopped eating & bought a street pasty instead. Mmm…

Lunch special £9 with drink was decent, but I am really not a fan of pub fare, unless we’re talking gastro pub like The Narrow. Friendly pub service. Well located in Alwych, close to The Waldorf, theatres and Covent Garden Market.
