I’m so glad that Jose and Pizarro restaurants on Bermondsey street finally combined and is one restaurant in Broadgate. I was very fortunate to try it out last night and was definitely impressed. The restaurant combines parts of the Jose and Pizarro menus from the two separate restaurants, which is nice because Jose has your typical tapas and Pizarro has more inventive dishes. The pan con tomate is amazing and the prawn fritters are quite good with a spicy kick to them! I did wish they had h and cheese croquetas and patatas bravas like at the SE1 location. However, the mains were delicious: the board of cured meats, venison and leg of duck. The staff is Spanish from all over the country and it makes you feel like you’re actually eating in Spain! A wonderful restaurant!

Oh my José Christ! Finally a decent Spanish restaurant in my area. If you haven’t been here, you are really, really missing out. For those of you who don’t know, Jose is a professional cooker who has worked at some of London’s most prestigious Spanish restaurants. He has been awarded Restaurant of the Year a couple of times, and is also the face of Tapas Fantasticas. Meat lovers will love it here, since the Spanish cuisine has special care with the meat dishes. I honestly haven’t ate such a pleasing meal from a long time. The combination of flavours is different and impressing, definitely worth trying . What to get: Slow cooked pork ribs which come with roasted tomatoes and pepper salad. What else: Tortillita de ‘camarones’ and seaweed; Jamón Ibérico and well, it is hard to go wrong with anything on the menu, so don’t be afraid to try something you’ve never heard. Now, the ribs where the most enjoying thing that happened to be in my mouth. Cooked to perfection, delicious, mouthwatering ribs that made me feel nostalgic about my trips to Spain. I miss those days in Barcelona drinking cold beer and eating tapas. I know I’ll be getting back here for another dose of calories after work, and so should you. Also: If you’re coming for breakfast, ask for the full Spanish. Thank me later.

José Pizarro at Broadgate Circle is a tasty new addition to the area with a well-curated selection of wines by the glass and a range of delicious small plates of food. Just a few weeks after José Pizarro launched a new restaurant around Liverpool Street station, I was for an event in the area at Boxpark Shoreditch and decided to have a small dinner at this new place. I had never managed to visit one of the other two ventures of José Pizarro, so I was excited to check out this recent opening. The first thing I noticed was the good wine selection. As far as I can tell, they only offer Spanish wines — but a wide range of Spanish wines, so it is not really a limitation. The restaurant is beautiful, dominated by an interesting mix of wood and concrete, metal tables and leather seats. Overall, the combination of colours is pleasing the eye, making it a enjoyable to spend time here. To be honest, I did not really like the fishy smell in the air, but I am sure many people will probably like this place even more just because of that. My meal started — well, it all came kind of at the same time anyway — with croquetas caseras. I must admit, I thought they were a little bit disappointing, lacking flavour or seasoning. The Ibérico pork meatballs on the other hand were tasty, especially the slightly spicy tomato and orange sauce. I never had that combination of spicy tomato and orange and it worked very well for me. Next up was pan con tomate, a simple classic. I am often not a big fan of tomato, for example on burgers, but here with the olive oil, everything came together beautifully. The lovely meatball sauce also helped spicing up the croquetas caseras, which actually tasted very nice with the sauce. While browsing through the wine list, I was happy to see that you can get quite a few of the wines by the glass. One option sounded particularly interesting, the TerraPrima Blanco from the Can Ràfols Del Caus estate. I decided to give it a try, because I’ve never before heard of a Riesling from Spain. This wine is 85% Xarel·lo, I grape variety I didn’t know, and 15% Riesling. The wine was truly brilliant with a bold freshness and distinctive mineral notes. After reading a little bit about this wine, I learned that the chalky soil surely contributed to this characteristic flavour. A surprising find and a very interesting take on Riesling. When it was time for a dessert, I quickly selected the chocolate with olive oil & salt, on toast. It sounded intriguing, but I did not quite know what to expect. The plate was dressed beautifully when it arrived and the dish tasted great. Thin, crispy slices of toasted bread added the needed crunch to complement the strong chocolate. The olive oil also blended nicely with the other ingredients. For a dessert, it was pretty salty, but that probably also made it more interesting. My wine proved to be a good choice not only for my other dishes, but also in combination with the rich flavours of the dessert. The service at José Pizarro was friendly and very attentive from start to end. Definitely a great place for dinner, small bites or just a glass of wine.

When Shoryu Ramen turned us away at 9:30 pm(insert angry face here), the staff recommended that we try Jose Pizarro. I was a little nervous about trying such a new restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised. Between the two of us, we shared the bread with olive oil, empanada with spinach. I had the sea bass and my company had bacalao a la riojana. I really enjoyed my delicate sea bass, which was buttery with the a slight citrus glaze. I think you can really go wrong with cooking fish skin because you need to get rid of that fishy smell but also not fry to bacon-level. Nonetheless, Jose Pizarro did it well and deliciously. It was also served with Morcilla Ibérica, which I have never tried before. It’s cured pork and tasted like smoked jerky but with a chorizo consistency. I strongly recommend this dish. My friend really enjoyed his cod even though he hates eating all other preparations of fish, so I think that is a good testament to the quality of the dish. We shared the crema catalana, which I found out to be a Spanish version of crème brûlée! It had a beautiful caramelized top with a light lemon and plum custard. Service was quite slow, but I can expect that from such a new restaurant.

We went here on the soft opening and the experience was really good. We had buñuelos de gambas, mushroom croquettes, octopus(the quality of this one was amazing, the best octopus i have eaten in UK), asparragus with egg and romesco sauce, a whole turbot(which included bread with tomate and salad as a side) and presa iberica(this one was pretty high quality as well, juicy and full of flavour meat). As a dessert we had a couple of gin tonics(served in a proper glass) and almond cake. I have to say that the quality overall was pretty good, plus the environment and the service was above average. The reason of the 4 stars is because we had to ask for our dessert a couple of times until it came(although they didn´t charge it at the end), and the prices were had been a little bit high if it wasn´t for the 50% off food promotion due to the soft launch.
