Popped into this pretty ice rink on Wednesday for a charity skate in aid of Richard House Children’s Hospice. The place is quite magical with a fairy light entrance pathway, and worker bees inside are very nice people indeed, and super helpful! We were on a later session but seeing the ice rink was quite empty asked if we could go in earlier and this was met with a resounding why not! Lockers are £1 non-refundable. Skate hire included. And there are penguins and seals for you to push around(or push other people around with), which are great for beginners! The ice rink is smaller than I am used to but just as fun! To note: If you need toilets, follow the snowflakes on the floor when you exit the skate hire section!

My Crazy Sports Club(aka Rabble) played a Broomball tournament here against Fire Hazard and the London Unspeakables. Don’t know what any of these words mean? Then you’re not truly enjoying London! Rabble is a group that plays kids’ playground games for exercise. We occasionally compete against Fire Hazard, who organize craziness and fun times, like treasure hunts. The London Unspeakables are an official Quidditch team. We all came together to play Broomball, a Canadian sport that’s a cross between ice hockey and curling. You don’t need to know how to skate, and Broadgate arranged the matches and refereed. They even have a medic on staff, which was useful as one game resulted in a broken nose. It’s fantastic to have a rink in the middle of the city, and the attached BBQ pop-up filled the area with delicious smells. The victors(us, of course) were treated to a bucket of beers afterward.

If the overcrowding and people wantonly flinging themselves across the ice usually puts you off skating, Broadgate may be the right place for you. Tucked away among the office blocks and only open in winter as it’s outdoor, on a rainy Sunday afternoon you may well find you have the ice all to yourself. Not too expensive compared to some of the other seasonal outdoor offerings, they also offer a student discount. It’s small and opening hours are a bit erratic because of the sport practice they hold there but the website is accurate and up to date.

An outdoor site which holds an impressive amount of events throughout the summer and winter months. Positioned just outside the back entrance of Liverpool Street Station, the area is dominated by city boys, oyster bars and expensive/crap clothes shops such as Reiss. From outdoor theatre, bowling and music events in the Summer, to ice skating and mulled wine nights in the winter, there is always something going on. There is an over-sized chess and droughts set available if you fancy a game.
