Distinctly average Indian, we went there on the recommendation of a few people, and although ok, it certainly was not great. The lamb spinach dish off the specials was pretty good, but the Balti was not, nor were the Bhajis, which had no flavour. If you want a hot curry, this is not your place. Cute little booths though.

This is an perfectly acceptable and around average Indian as UK-style Indian restaurants go. I was a little taken aback as to how quickly I was served, with my starter coming when I’d barely had one of my two poppadoms(and I do kinda chomp through them pretty quickly). I seemed to be served by at least three different staff to make sure I got all my courses in such quick succession. Maybe they though being there by myself meant I was keen not to stay long? I ordered a vegetable vindaloo. It was not on the hotter end of vindaloos, but okay. The veg were similarly rateable as okay, and seemed to be a mix of obviously frozen mixed veg and some that could have at least passed as fresh(and perhaps even were fresh) The Indian beers only come in bottles, and I didn’t try the deserts, which looked like a standard kind of ice cream range. I’d not baulk if a group suggested we go here to dine, and may even choose to go back, but not before I try to find out if Liverpool has better Indian restaurants. It surely must.

You’ll want to visit this place for the seating layout. Covering almost half of the restaurant are personal«booths» which can hold up to four people. Ideal if you’re looking for a touch of privacy for your evening meal. Personal drawback for me was the price; I would say this establishment is 15−20% more expensive than larger restaurants in the South — something I wasnt expecting! With that being said, the food was excellent, arrived quickly and the service was superb. Shame there was no Punky Penguin on the dessert menu!

Uni Indian Restaurant has been called the best balti in Liverpool and although I wouldn’t quite go that far it does deserve its’ good reputation because quite simply the food is excellent. The fare here is well presented, quickly arrives and is tasty as hell. It caters for large parties and the fact that it has been around for a long time means it is brilliantly professional and experienced in what it does. People who go to this restaurant always seem to return and there must be a good reason behind this. The staff are great they are friendly, chatty and make you feel really at home when inside meaning the place has an excellent community atmosphere something which other restaurants lack. I can only suggest this place to you, for you to gain the full measure of its’ excellence you will have to try it firsthand.

I love the Uni but I’m never sure how to pronounce it, is it u-n-i or unee — either way its a Liverpool Institution! You will get a real lesson in cookery here! It’s a… ooh, tough crowd. The food here is brilliant and its very cheap. The one thing people will mention about the Uni are the cute little booths here with curtains that allow you to have your own little private space — something of a novelty in an Indian, although I imagine it’s to get away from the rowdy late night beer n curry crowd as I can’t really imagine anyone becoming too romantic over a Rogan Josh and Garlic Naan?! The staff here are very nice, and not just in the polite manner you are accustomed to from an Indian, they do seem genuinely interested in your experience and will get you settled and ordered with speed.

I agree, the best Indian in Liverpool! I just love the quirkyness of the place, the cubicles are an excellent idea even just for a little privacy in the busy restaurant. If you’re not really into the privacy, the gimmick is enough, especially considering you have a button to call the waiter. FAB. Onto the food, the portions are really generous, especially considering the price. I would recommend the King Prawn Special and the samosa’s. Delicious. The staff are really friendly and accommodating, although that can start to slip once you’ve pressed the button for the waiter twenty times before your starters have even arrived!

THE best curry house in the city, as far as I’m concerned. In a prime location for students(just down the hill from Liverpool and JMU guilds) and with bloody decent prices, you can’t complain! Ok, when you get inside it may look a little dicey, as the décor hasn’t been touched up for quite a while and it’s mainly filled with booths with the curtains drawn across. But that adds to its charm once you get used to it, and is especially handy if you’re on a date. Once you’re sat at your table(there are also some banquet tables for larger groups), you’re given a fairly standard Indian menu, with the usual ‘foreign’ beer choices like Cobra etc. Don’t do what my friend did, and say that because he was starving he wanted 10 poppadoms with all the trimmings before the mains arrived. We struggled to get through them, and then he insisted that they bring the curries out straight away, as he didn’t want them to go cold or be sat on a hot plate. This of course meant that I couldn’t finish half of my curry and could barely look at the beautiful peshwari naan. I’ve never had a dessert in an Indian restaurant, because the food just fills me up so much. I remember another time in the UnI when I was in a fairly bad state due to alcohol consumption and actually had a debate with myself as to whether I should go and make myself sick so I could eat the food that I hadn’t touched, due to aforementioned alcohol. I know most people say a curry is a curry, but these are damn good and worth being sick for! Another time my idiot friends decided to order fahls, which are apparently the hottest curries in the world. Being a strict korma fan, I watched in amazement as they sweated their way through. I mean, what is the point? Surely they couldn’t taste anything beyond their tastebuds shrivelling and dying? Anyway, I digress. The UnI is fab fab FAB for curry and is affordable and quite quirky. I wished I remembered to go there more often, instead of always ending up in Shiraz!

A quirky Indian restuarant. This quaint little establishment offers great indian cusine set in an authentic atmosphere. The service is professional and friendly. Added to the great food is the option to be seated in one of their many secluded booths each having curtains and a light dimmer to set the mood. This is a good idea and makes the experience much more personal; instead of eating with 10 other couples!
