Well on a cold, icey visit to liverpool one saturday in search of a pub we’d heard a lot about we came across the big house has we we’re told by locals. This place is massive we entered the doors to what must of been the snug. The lovely Irish girl behind the bar was very polite and friendly and helpful giving us directions to the other pub we we’re looking for. We sat down next to a couple of nice Irish lads i think this part of liverpool must be popular with the Irish community cos most of the locals we’re irish. The beer was cheap enough and a good pint and the locals friendly. Would of loved to stay for a couple more but was in a hurry, definitely visiting this place next time.

It’s big and it’s brash. The Big House. If you take a quick look at the Vines neighbours you will see McHales Irish American bar renowned for its rowdiness and then a little closer you will notice X in the City a lapdancing parlour or lappies kid! To use the parlance of our times. Oh and then there are usually a bunch of tramps sitting in the unused doorway, but they can’t be seen as a permanent fixture — by the vary nature of tramps are they transient people. So having understood the vacinity it should be no surprise to you dear punter that The Vines will usually give you a fairly rockin Friday, Saturday and indeed Sunday evening provided what rocks you are karaōke and somebody’s grandmother pinching your arse. It is known — well the Grafton made its reputation on those themes alone, in fact it didn’t even need the karaōke!

Another Liverpool pub of ornate splendour, at least on the outside, the Vines is brought down slightly by the fact that buildings often have to have people in them or the very idea of their business dissipates into nothing. Buildings must hate us. With the ‘merrier’(i.e. rougher) end of the drunken spectrum being found here as well as the inevitable karaōke night that blights the Lime Street area, the Vines isn’t the kind of place you’d bring anybody you want to impress. However, as a scruffily downmarket, yet oddly elaborate boozer, it does a cracking job.

The Vines is a large establishment which dates back to 1906 and has a real history and character about it. The pub serves real ale and has a warmth to it which not many pubs in the city can match up too. The prices can be a little steep but this is understandable given the range of real ale available. The Vines is always busy so it can take quite a while to be served however it is worth the wait even if the place is a little crowded, there is enough space for you to find a little nook or cranny to sit back and take in the character of this establishment. If your after a real pub with a bit of history head to the Vines.

This is a top class traditional pub based right in the heart of Liverpool City Centre. It brings back so many good memories for me as this was where we went and sang karaōke every Monday night in our first year of University. What a friendly pub! Bear in mind there were often 6 of us, lairy students in their first year, some southerners, and some from Manchester. Our first night in this pub we were made so welcome for joining in with the regulars on Karaōke that they bought us two rounds of drinks. We went religiously every Monday night and really got to know the crowd in here, what a fantastic friendly pub. It’s not too pricey, its back room has fabulous old décor with really ornate ceilings and furniture. They have Beatles tribute bands playing occasionally which are fantastic! I couldn’t recommend this place any higher, a must for all locals, travellers and students! It’s places like this that give Liverpool her friendly reputation!

More commonly known as ‘The Big House’, this pub gets all walks of life in it due to its location. Being practically on top of the Adelphi Hotel, next to a strip club and a 2 minute walk from Lime Street Station, you can expect to see pretty much anyone here. Another pub that has karaōke frequently, it also hosts various union nights and has a large function room near the loos. The bar isn’t exactly the best stocked but the staff are nice and there are TVs and games machines dotted about the place. I’ve often found myself there at around 5pm as it has always seemed to be the handiest place to go for after-work drinks. It seems I’m not the only person to think that either. It can get quite rowdy of an evening and unfortunately you get to see the more stereotypical side of Liverpool as the night progresses. Lads in tracksuits lurk outside having a fag and more often than not a fight breaks out sooner or later. My best advice is to try it before 8pm if you want to enjoy it!

The Vines is an impressive looking building. Inside you can marvel at the carved ceilings and big red booths that are on the left hand side of the bar. It hosts a mixed crowd– mainly hardened drinkers and postmen celebrating the end of their shift! It’s pretty friendly and jovial and your bound to climb over someone worse for wear on the steps on the way out! Defo a long-standing, busy scouse pub.
