A tiny pub with a great big name, THEGLOBE is one of those snug cubbyholes you wish were more present in your city. There’s always a couple but there could be more. Saying that though, I haven’t looked under my bed or behind the kettle so maybe that’s why I’ve missed them. They’re like pixies. The Globe itself acts as a soothing antidote to Cooper’s, next door but one. Just like the latter, the former is alive with Scouse accents but they’re not as painful to listen to or be around. Also, the smell here is one of pure nostalgia, evoking memories you suspect overlap your own lifetime by a few decades.

The Globe is a pub which firmly sticks to its old traditions despite the city of Liverpool being dragged firmly to the forefront of the modern age in the last few years or so. Liverpool is a former capital of culture and the kind of city which attracts thousands of tourists and has something for people of all ages yet somehow this old pub still manages to be a beautiful gem. This place is small and attracts an older crowd but there is nowhere in Liverpool where the atmosphere is livelier or indeed friendlier. It doesn’t matter here whether you are a regular or a newcomer as you will be treated exactly the same either way. The staff have a smile ready and although service can be slow this shouldn’t deter you from visiting. This is the kind of place that you go to for a traditional pint in traditional surroundings and you cannot beat it.

The Globe is a particularly expansive name for a pub which wouldn’t be big enough to swing a bag of pork scratching in. There is hardly a seat in the place and you often will find yourself propping up the bar or more usually walls here. Still, what with the pub’s «famous sloping floor» even if you found a table there’s no guarantee your pint would stay in your glass once you set it down. Still table space aside(I don’t want you to get the impression I’m obsessed by the idea of tables in pubs. I’m not. Well, maybe a bit) what The Globe does very, very well is real ale. With a rotating selection of guest ales and a range of consistent winners-including local flavourite Cain’s Bitter –you will not find a better selection in the City Centre. If it was good enough for the first Liverpool CAMRA meeting then it’s definitely good enough for me. My tip for the ale drinkers is O’Hanlons Yellowhammer, which with a honey and elderflower taste to it is the perfect summer tipple. A few of them should straighten out that sloping floor.

Ah the Globe — often overlooked by karaōke-crazy me in favour of Coopers next door. However, I prefer these little pubs far greater than the commercial chain pubs you see popping up here there and everywhere. Once you’ve found a decent standing/sitting space in the Globe, don’t give it up for love nor money — its a tiny pub and any space you can make your own you need to keep a hold of. Not the sort of place you will find many students or out-of-towners, this is a traditional scouse pub and you can tell a mile off. Still, it’s either an opportunity to make friends with a bunch of strangers or be scared half to death — the choice is yours.

This is a great little pub, with an old fashioned look which really stands out amongst the new and modern pubs etc. in the area. It also stands out as it’s a bit random in the middle of Liverpool’s shopping district. The pub has a very local flavour as the sound bouncing off the walls is often a thick scouse accent, but that’s what makes this pub. The walls are decorated with the usual Liverpool-mania stuff, adding to the local feel again. In terms of the drink — the big brand names dominate the real age, and of course Cains stands proud as the brewery is only around the corner. The pub is quite small and you’ll struggle to find a spot in the small bar area, however there is another small cosy room at the back.
