The curiously named Paraffin Oil shop is situated on the corner of the busy Edge Lane and just round the corner from the centre of Old Swan. It is a large pub, with an extensive bar. The pub is a little bit dark during the day but it feels cosy and homely. The customers appear to mostly be regulars, probably spending most of their time in there. When you enter there is a brief silence as people work out if they know you, but then they go back to their quiet chunnering. The staff are friendly and serve you quickly. They are happy to suggest a drink if you cant decide what you want. There are a lot of options at the bar and the lager is perfect. There is nothing that really stands out about this pub. Everything is OK but there is nothing exceptional that really makes you want to go back again.

The most striking thing about this pub is it’s name as from the outside it’s quite nondescript, a plain frontage on a somewhat bleak corner. Things improve slightly on entering although it has seen better days and is in need of some tlc! Spacious rooms and a decent servery but a distinct lack of atmosphere as local industry has all but disappeared to be replaced by a Technology Park which is populated each morning by car occupants who leave each evening with barely a glimpse for this once thriving purveyor of good cheer. The stars are for what could be.
