The Red House is situated on the central crossroads of the busy Old swan shopping area. After a bit of a shopping spree I decided to give it a go. The thing that hits you right away is that the pub is very dark. Once your eyes adjust to this you notice the large bar and the friendly staff greeting you. The staff are eager to help and advise and do seem to go out of their way o give a good service whether you’re a regular, or just stepping in for the first time. There seems to be effort made to attract people into the pub, such as advertising nights like traffic light dating evenings, but it all seems a bit stuck in the early 90’s. The interior of the pub, although clean and tidy, is also a bit outdated and due for a good refurb.

The Red House is so central to Old Swan’s restless shopping nucleus that it can sometimes feel a bit in the way. To compensate, it has tried to be all things to all men. Does a pub really need a tanning salon? The outside seating area is a bit of a letdown too, little more than the delivery yard with barrels shifted and a few tables plonked down. The traffic thundering past and filling your lungs with exhaust does little to improve anything. There’s nothing wrong with the Red House, it’s just a bit too soulless for its own good and therefore, won’t stick in your memory very long afterwards.
