These boots were modo for walkin… Modo el Mundo… Mo Dough Mo problems… Enough a modo about nothing… ok ok enough modoing and onto the business of telling you«Mo» about this joint. kissssss ma bad self chamon. Ok where to start… well, how about Modo themselves in their own words…(if you believe them)… Modo since it opened about 13 years ago when I was ickle boy has apparently become«a legendary force on the Liverpool scene». Hmmmm ya whatever… not so sure about that my Modo Dudos but what I am sure about my fellow homo sapiens is that if il fait du soleil… thenthank you please comings for a cocktail or two here definitelymundo as they have an offer on for 2−4−1 silvous plait commencez allez… Viva las Modos… As well as the day light hours its also good for a night out. As my fellow Unilocaleep Rebecca kindly points out it has also gained decent reputation for nocturnal activities. Although the crowd is not as good as it used to be, however it still ranks higher than surrounding humble abodes. Now I recognise that concert square is not the best of places to be hanging around in. However to someone visiting the Pool for the first time it is an absolute spectacle. I vividly remember my first experience, I was rather merry. I found it highly amusing all that jazz. Police every where it was like a carnival to me, and it was absolutely exhilarating experience. Nothing has ever happened to me here which is probably because every time I’ve been here I’ve been shielded somewhat by a dozen or so friends. Even then don’t think it’s as bad as some of the other reviews suggest. Someone mentioned Beirut… yah okkkk then… talk about imaginative geographies… Modo is good fun at night and during the day. If you decide to check it out at night though make sure you are alert and wake up when you gogo!

Three important(possibly life-saving) questions: 1.Has darkness fallen? 2.Are there fights breaking out? 3.Are there leery gross drunkards of all kinds, mainly of the scally/student persuasion lurking? If so, then you need to get yourself outta concert square. Wedged between Holy Joes and Walkabout opposite The Office is Modo. Filth from all four sides. But Modo does cut a slightly better figure than the others, its close proximity tarnishes it and drags it down into the abyss, yep, abyss which is concert square in the evening. In the day however, it’s a slightly more amicable surrounding, with chairs set out where you can park yourself with a cocktail or a beer and check out their BBQ which is really decently priced and good for a stomach liner before the drunken zombies attack.

If you type ‘Concert Square’ into the search bar and set the filter to ‘bile’ the chances are the results given will be my reviews. I’m not a fan of the place at all. However, in a way I’m happy it exists, for the sole reason that it clusters most of town’s unlikeables into one handy-to-avoid area. It’s just a shame I have to walk through it on nights out. If you were going to twist my arm and push a Kalashnikov to my temple, I’d admit that Modo is one of the better places, although that’s not saying much. On a sunny afternoon, it can be satisfying to recline outside on the curvy, orange chairs and sip at a cocktail of lurid colour. Inside, the bar doesn’t appeal. Well, except the hidden tunnel of mirrors. You can pretend you’re drinking with loads of people who all look like you. My idea of paradise.

Modo is quite a classy establishment and it may surprise you that I think it would benefit from not being right in the heart of concert square. My reasoning for this is that concert square can become a scene of unruly and yobbish behaviour during peak times of drinking and Modo is not a place which is suited to this type of behaviour. The bar itself is a nice establishment, the décor is classy and modern and it has two long bars which are both well staffed and quick to be served at. The outdoor seating area can be pleasant when it is not overcrowded and it can be nice to simply sit and enjoy a drink from Modo in this area whilst elsewhere the mayhem unfolds. Infact due to the crowd which concert square can attract it can often be better to simply sit and observe in the outdoor area rather than get in the thick of it inside the club. The real selling point for Modo is their cocktails they have a great selection all of which are expertly made and before 8pm on Friday and Saturdays there is a 2 for 1 offer on these cocktails which is exceptional value for such a prime club. There are also certain bottles at £1.50 but again these are not on offer after 8 on Friday and Saturday evenings. They recently relaunched in spectacular fashion with annie mac DJing and burlesque performers present which says everything about the calibre of the place. During the summer they like a good BBQ and this is something well worth checking out also. I really enjoy Modo I just wish it wasn’t located where it is.

Modo has changed a bit since it’s heyday over a decade ago. Once the bar was a very cool hang-out you could find hidden away, down a narrow staircase and between the bars of Concert Square and now it IS Concert Square. Once the place expanded and developed a new floor the rot set in, which is pretty easy amidst this collection of bars. The square encourages the worst elements of Liverpool’s nightlife which people visiting find at once fascintaing and appalling — it can look like an episode of Banged Up Abroad on a Saturday night! Modo has lost its quirky, boho identity and blended various styles and musical tastes to suit a broader customer base which has meant that its original laid-back, shabby chic outlook has been overtaken by a beer and shots mentality.

While the bar itself seems to exude a level of elegant cool all too often it becomes the site of random shouting and vomiting. The drinks here are fine, with a selection of cocktails as good as any your likely to find in Liverpool outside of Santa Chupito’s, and the food is of a consistently good quality(during the hot summer months they go Barbecue crazy offering flame grilled burgers, steaks and seasoned kebab skewers, which along with a pint or glass of your favourite is a great way to spend an early evening). They even have some interesting ideas for distinctive and different nights out — a recent Friday night catwalk competition with prizes for the best dressed seemed to fit perfectly with the glamorous tone the bar is trying to achieve. The problem here is positioning. A largely outdoor bar in the middle of the busy Concert Square means that inevitably the crowds are going to be big and occasionally confrontational. It really is a shame though because this is a great looking place.

I used to be a big fan of this place, but it seems to have changed direction a few times since I last dubbed myself a regular, and it’s now moving towards a much more clubby feel. Once somewhere cool and laid back, Modo went through a phase of being the place were people wanted to be seen all dolled up, and now is kind of at an intermediate stage. Once the bar of choice for Hollyoaks actors, break dancers and glamour pusses, it was a cool hang out, especially after the refurb that gave us ‘hidden’ booths in the ground floor bar and toilets that no one could work out which was meant to be male or female. Home to a few resident DJs, the music was eclectic and funky, and the drinks flowed like water. Probably one of, if not the first cocktail bar in the area, Modo has been popular through the years for giving us things like a Raspberry Ripple, which you wouldn’t believe was alcoholic unless you saw it being made, and due to the outdoor seating in Concert Square is ridiculously busy in the summer and those random warm days you get throughout the year. It has experimented with various food menus over the years, and although the kitchen is smallish they can turf out some tasty snacks. Unfortunately, in the evening it seems to have become one of those places that only hen do’s go to, and has since lost some of its original charm and appeal. Watch this space though as another refurb and style overhaul is imminent…
