The quaintest purveyor of newspapers this side of Hobbiton, Hope Street News is a world all unto itself. Sitting on a Georgian corner opposite the majestic might of the Anglican Cathedral, I will often go out of my way to buy a bag of crisps from here, rather than step into the usual sort of nearby tobacconists, the ones that all look like they’ve got guns under the counter. The jolly old soul I’ve spotted working here on occasion really is an oddity. With his round glasses, colourful waistcoat and Ben Franklin hair, he looks too imagined to be real. I tried swatting him once to see if my hand passed through him, but all I did was knock over the Trebor Extra Strong. Possibly the nicest newsagents in the city.

Here’s an excellent little newsagent’s with some superb prices, specifically for the Guardian, Observer, Independent and Times. What looks like a little townhouse on Hope Street is home to a great range of confectionary, snacks and cold drinks and just happens to be handily located on the corner of Canning and Hope Street, close to a great deal of nearby restaurants, the two cathedrals and a lot of apartments. Yes, I look at those original features and I covet those apartments. Dang. It’s the archetypal corner shop, stocking all your essentials alongside a great range of papers and magazines, and you can get some groceries here too, all at reasonable prices. Amazingly convenient in terms of location and content, if you’re in the area I’d recommend popping in for your necessaries.
