If you’re after a deliciously thin and crispy pizza topped with mouthwatering ingredients, go to Deli Mamma, Pizza Parlour or the Little Pizza Company. If it’s stupid-o-clock however and great quality mozzarella, fresh basil and olive oil would be completely wasted on you, go to Hardman Pizza Co. Their pizzas are warm and edible, their prices are cheap as chips and they’re open til the wee hours. Most importantly, the other customers will probably be just as legless and hungry as you!

Situated handily by a fair few of Liverpool’s popular night-time venues(Hannah’s, Baa Bars, Bumper, Magnet et al), this pizza place is packed to the rafters during the small hours of the morning. For ludicrously low prices you can get any take-out of your desire, from chicken burgers to seafood or super meat-y pizzas. I’m not a fan of 3am food but sneakily stole a slice of my friend’s cheese and tomato number and was unimpressed with its quality. The base was kind of cardboard-esque and I like a healthy cheese/tomato ratio, whereas this was mostly cheese. As a picky calorie-consumer I could recommend far better takeaways nearby and closer to the centre of Liverpool’s night-life hotspots. Hardman has a less interesting atmosphere, so if you want a quiet munch of takeaway cuisine(i.e, if you’re sitting in there for any length of time) then this is probably your best bet. But I personally enjoy a spot of 3am take-out banter which is why Carlitos will always be my number one.

Hardman Pizza is another city centre takeaway whose interior seems to alter every time I pass. The appearance and disappearance of furniture, coupled with the inexplicable movement back and forth of the counter make it seem like they’re doing it to baffle me personally. This place is like the proto-Shiraz, a takeaway I’d visit for burgery goodness back in the dim and distant past, before that other place further up the road came along and made sense out of my life. Here, the staff are friendly and the food is delectable(when you’re drunk at 3am, obviously) but it falls down when you consider the small fact that it just isn’t Shiraz.

Somewhat confusingly, not only is this the second Hardman Pizza in Liverpool but it is also not even on Hardman Street itself. Whether this shop is connected to the excellent Hardman Pizza on Hardman Street(keep up!) is anyone’s guess but judging on the quality of the food they probably aren’t. It’s not that the food on offer is terrible — the chicken fillet burger is particularly thick and juicy — it’s just that there are better takeaways in Liverpool and even on that particular street. Some items can be quite expensive but this is to be expected with a takeaway a stone’s throw from Concert Square, perhaps another reason to avoid it.

Again, another contender for the Shiraz title, but I’m not budging I’m afraid. Some people have no loyalty though, and if you’re one of these people, Hardman Pizza is for you. When I was working in an Italian which isn’t there any more, and people ordered pizza, we didn’t actually have the capability to cook pizza in our kitchen. But of course, you have to have pizza on the menu for an Italian Bistro, so on the odd occasion one got ordered, it was my job to slip out the back and run down to Hardman Pizza and have them make it instead. We never had a dissatisfied customer. Strange but true! By the way, the name refers to the street where it’s based, not the fact that you would have to be a hard man to eat there.
