Wonderful number of vinyl records of old. If you are looking for second hand records or just genuine classics, chances are you’ll find it here. The owner was readily available and helpful to find what you need. Although a dusty place, it adds to the atmosphere.

Hairy Records is situated at the top of Bold Street in the city centre. Its one of the few remaining vinyl specialist shops. Now I’m not a vinyl fan but this place is a godsend for those who still cling on to those plastic Frisbee shaped discs. These have a massive range of vinyl here by all sorts of bands and artists. They have everything from rap to prog rock and everything in between. The records are organised into genres and artists. The shop’s interior is in need of refurbishment as it looks a little run down and tatty, but who cares? It just adds to the retro feel of the place. The staff are very friendly and only too happy to help you find what you need. If they don’t stock something they will also try and find it from their stockists and then get back in touch with you. This is an awesome little shop. Please go visit and help keep it going!

I first noticed Hairy Records when there was a feature on BBC’S The One Show which discussed the charms of this quaint old record store and stated that this was the UK’s oldest record store! The store truly is a gem which proudly fits in as part of Liverpool’s phenomenal musical heritage. I cannot pretend to be a vinyl expert or even someone who is a great musical muse but Hairy Records not only captured my imagination but the true spirit of Liverpool’s music scene. The shop has clearly not been decorated in quite some time and if you have any dust allergies than I would advise wearing a mask, but this lack of a refurb is not a bad thing after all why fix it if its’ not broken ! For years and years Hairy Records has been selling musical legacy in the form of classic vinyls and there is no reason it should ever change. The prices have hiked up a bit recently but understandably so as vinyls are not heavily bought globally and there are limited numbers of most vinyl records. The fact that a purchase from Hairy Records is most likely going to be a limited edition piece makes your purchase and your visit all the more special. Vinyl shops such as Hairy Records are under threat for their very existence so please, please PLEASE! get down to Hairy Records peruse the classic products and buy something that you will treasure for ever.

Want Stax of vintage vinyl? Then come to Hairy Records. You’d have to be a complete Stiff not to be amazed by the range on offer here. Seriously, Parlophone your mum, your dad and your sister because there’s something here for everyone — if that sister of yours tries to take that last copy of Sticky Fingers though, be warned, I’ll Decca. I promise you, this is no Trojan horse — there are Def(initely) Jam great records here at prices that mean you won’t have to work a double shift at the Factory. Just wait and see, you may even have enough left over for an Apple. There are 2 Tones of people in this world, people who dig ditches and people who dig crates — you dig?

Ahh remember the days when the streets were lined with used record stores? These days have long gone since the introduction of places like HMV, but Hairy is a breath of fresh air… sort of. It’s one of the last independent record stores left in Liverpool, which as someone has pointed out is crazy considering our library of music greats is what keeps us afloat as a city. Hairy has hundreds and thousands of vinyls, quite literally. You could spend all day browsing through the collection which ranges from rock to funk, and covers at least 30 years of music history. All in all, nice to see a store thriving on selling vinyl in an age where it is so difficult to find.

Liverpool’s selection of independent record shops is so bad, considering the city’s monumental musical heritage, it’s almost laughable. Hairy is one of the few left and is probably the biggest and best known. Its collection of vinyl is tremendous with stacks and stacks from all genres and eras that you can happily spend days rooting through them all. But like all specialist shops — particularly record shops — there is always a catch. Remember High Fidelity? Remember the father innocently asking Jack Black if he had a copy of ‘I Just Called To Say I Love You’? Yep, just be careful.

One of the last remaining secondhand record shops in Liverpool is Hairy Records. Situated at the top of Bold Street, it’s a gloriously ramshackle shop that has literally dozens of racks of old vinyl. The window is a great indicator of what you’ll find inside with well thumbed copies of early Dylan, Neil Young and Van Morrison records alongside old classics by The Cure, The Smiths and The Specials. It’s not all rock and pop however, as inside there are literally hundreds of brilliant soul, funk, disco, motown, northern soul, girl groups, reggae and krautrock albums. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, ask the friendly owner and there’s a chance he might have a copy somewhere. I only chatted to him for five minutes and it was clear his passion and enthusiasm for music was infectious. In the week, Hairy Records is quite quiet so you’ll have time to look through everything without being disturbed. At weekends however, expect to be elbowed by local musicans like The Zutons and The Coral.
