I hate to post negative reviews but given how many people rave about this bland machine I feel some balance is needed It’s an utter mystery to me why Ox & Finch is held as the poster child of Glasgow dining. It’s not even the best restaurant in a 2 minute radius. It would struggle to make the top 20 in that area. For me it has two major flaws Food — occasionally competent but overall mediocre and utterly unmemorable. Apart from the awful dishes which I’ve bleached from my memory. Experience — essentially the Manhattan model of fill every table and turn them multiple times per night. But taken to uncomfortable extremes. Maybe I visited at the wrong time. Maybe it was the horrendous boorish«look at me eating in the latest hot spot» crowd at the next table. Or the fact we were so tightly packed that it felt like I was invading their space. Can I give it Half a star? The view out the window reminded me their are much better options a short walk away

Updated review and still 5stars! Phew! You know that thing where something is so perfect first time around, you are almost scared to go back in case it isn’t as good the second time? Needn’t have worried! I took my mum and dad here as a thank you for all the help they gave me when I moved cities and changed jobs. Above and beyond, as always, my maw and paw. As before, the staff were lovely and relaxed and took the time to chat about what prompted our special occasion, swapped notes on how brilliant Glasgow is, and filled us in on some of the more unusual sounding ingredients in the menu. Every dish we ordered was met with ‘ooohs’ and ‘aaahs’ from maw and paw for pretty plates full of flavour. My favourite is still the crab with pomelo, and my dad genuinely hasn’t stopped talking about the prawns and morcilla. My maw and paw are well travelled Bön viveurs so believe me it is high praise indeed that they have declared it their favourite meal of all time, apart from that street food market in Singapore that time(NB: They talk about that blimmin’ meal at that blimmin’ market so much, I now have a kind of sibling rivalry thing going with a street food market in Singapore. I have to remind them that they love me more). I’m delighted that ox & finch is still top of my pops too — for the amazing food, and the wonderful warm service, and for impressing my maw and paw, and for enabling me to treat them to a memorably wonderful meal plus desserts plus wine plus coffees for around 100 quid. I’d also like to give my parents a 5star review for being the absolute best, but they don’t seem to be on Unilocal

As soon as we arrived(5PM) we were seated and reminded that our table need to be flipped at 6:30PM. Cool, not really an issue since it’s not a coursed meal place. The restaurant was completely full and people really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Jordan and I ordered beers and then checked out the menu. Once our server came back to the table we ordered: *Smoked Ham Hock & Cheddar Croquettes — similar to mozzarella sticks except that they were little balls filled with ham and cheddar. They didn’t come with a dipping sauce but they honestly didn’t need one because the cheese was still runny inside. I enjoyed them a little more than Jordan did, but we both liked them! *Duck Fat Chips with Roasted Garlic Aioli — Wow! I wanted to ask if they could give me some of the garlic aioli to take home with us — it was THAT good. The fries were standard UK fries, more like American steak fries, but the aioli is what made them. It was the perfect amount of garlic. I love garlic. *Spiced Scallops with Chana Del, Pickled Cucumber, and Yoghurt — I’m not sure how Jordan has managed to make me fall in love with scallops but he has. These were cooked perfectly, not too soggy, and not overcooked, and the chana del(chickpeas or lentils that are pureed) was a great combination with the pickled cucumber and yoghurt. All of the flavors came together beautifully and the textures were fabulous! *Buffalo Mozzarella, Fig, Mint, Prosciutto and 8 Year Aged Balsamic — Hands down, this was our favorite item we ordered. It was a slight fight to see which one of us ate the last bite. Jordan’s a gentleman and let me have it. We’re both suckers for buffalo mozzarella, and then to combine it with fresh figs, mint, prosciutto, and balsamic. It really doesn’t get any better than that! We contemplated ordering another plate of this because it was THAT good! *Gin and Beetroot Cured Salmon, Celeriac Remoulade and Wasabi — Jordan ate the majority of this dish. I had a bite initially but wasn’t 100% sold on the gin taste of it. It seemed to be their version of sashimi. It was good but we both agreed we probably wouldn’t try it again so we could have something else instead. *Pineapple Carpaccio, Coconut Ice Cream, Tarragon & Lime — This was our first dessert of the evening. Being a lover of pineapples I couldn’t wait to try this one out. The presentation of the food was stunning; we almost didn’t want to eat it. Don’t worry, we did! :) The coconut ice cream was my favorite part of it surprisingly. Surprisingly there wasn’t a ton of pineapple in the dish which was a tad disappointing. Next time we go I’m trying the peanut butter dessert! By the time we finished dessert and our beers it was 6:15PM so we paid the bill and were on our way. I plan to take my Mom there when she visits. Some of the food might freak her out but it’s all fresh, prepared to the highest standards, and presented beautifully. She’ll love it!

We went to Ox & Finch last night for a friend’s birthday meal and it was excellent. Every single thing I tried was delicious! Friendly staff, too. Yep, a top notch experience last night!

Have waited a while to visit here and it was worth the wait! Packed full at lunchtime on a Saturday, we had the Thai red duck, mushrooms on sour dough, crayfish and crab, goats cheese and fennel, halloumi, mozzarella and figs, and a portion of the sourdough. Along with a few soft drinks this came to under £50. Highlight for me was the duck which was melt in the mouth!

Went here yesterday with friends from work for lunch after hearing numerous good things. Safe to say I wasn’t dissapointed, an amazing lunch! Having been told it’s popular, I booked ahead(and I’d reccomend it, it got very busy!) The restaurant itself isn’t on the large side, but there is still quite a few tables. Kitchen is open planned so you can see the food being prepared. The food is served tapas style, which is great as you can try a lot of different dishes, and there’s so many fantastic dishes it’s reccomended. We were a group of 5 so had 2 of the snacks to start then 8 of the tapas dishes. I won’t list all of them but I’ll pay special mention to a couple. The braised ox cheek was absolutely incredible, very tender, served with creamed celeriac and red cabbage. The Chinese cabbage with sausage was also incredible, best cabbage dish I’ve had by miles. Desserts weren’t shared, but everyone had their own! The peanut butter and spiced apple mille feuile was incredible, very large portion for the price as well. They do have a great drinks selection on offer too, as it was lunch I only opted for the 2⁄3 pint of the organic lager. It was very nice though, would have again. Service was excellent as well, server was great at advising us on how to order with a few reccomendations. Very quick at serving us too for a busy lunch. One thing to note is the dishes come out as they are made, which isn’t a problem if you’re sharing like we did, as everyone as trying dishes as they come. Overall this was one of the best lunches I’ve had in Glasgow and will be back very soon.

Can’t go wrong with Ox and Finch! There are so many good reviews for a reason, it really is just brilliant. We’ve not been since it opened(must have been Spring 2014 if my memory serves me correctly… but was our first trip with baby in tow so booked ahead for a late lunch. A(really cool) high chair was already attached to our table and all settled in within minutes, which is unusual when out with a baby as there is normally something you have to ask for or furniture to be rearranged but no so at Ox and Finch. Our server was really friendly and talked us through the menu and the specials. We ordered some bread with sobrasada(Spanish sausage paste) and the nicest olives to start before picking 5 dishes to share(it’s tapas style but bigger portions than your average tapas place) alongside some drinks from the excellent drinks list… I had the champagne raspberry float which looked amazing, champagne and raspberry sorbet, in a garnished glass and extra champagne in a wee old fashioned milk bottle to top it up. EVERYTHING we had was divine! Crab and crayfish cocktail was served in a crab shell which was cool, the Ox cheek just melted in the mouth, the pork belly with smoked polenta was out of this world, even the carrots with dukha were immense, and the prawn and squid was served with the most delicate yet tasty chorizo. I even ordered the peanut butter Mille-feuille as everything else was so spot on, pudding must be good too. The food is far better than I remember. Must have improved with age. It’s not the cheapest place but money well spent as you will be satisfied. Our bill, for 3 starters, 5 plates, pudding, 2 drinks and 2 coffees came to £68. The service is spot on, the toilets immaculate, overall a great experience. Will not leave it so long next time… any excuse ;)

I’m not sure why I didn’t review Ox and Finch after my first visit but I’m not going to let the praise rain down after my second visit. It is rare to find a restaurant in Glasgow that lives up to the hype but Ox and Finch does not disappoint. Not only is the food amazing, but the service is outstanding. I really wanted to take my husband after my first visit; they do have highchairs, but we found a babysitter so we could actually enjoy our meal without worrying about little diners. We’d both been to the original Street Food Cartel event that the people behind Ox and Finch helped originate so we were excited to dine with them again. The menu at Ox and Finch is seasonal and changes throughout the year so while I would have ordered pretty much everything I ate on my first visit that wasn’t an option and that’s okay because it meant I got to try things I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. We ordered the Smoked Ham Hock & Cheddar croquettes, Crab & Crayfish cocktail with Avocado, Thai Yellow Curry Duck, Confit Hogget Shoulder with Israeli Cous Cous and Heritage Carrots with Barrel Aged Feta. All your plates come up as they are ready, tapas style. The croquettes came out first and were so tasty – they weren’t heavy or greasy and while we kept saying we weren’t going to eat them all for fear of filling up we totally did. Next came the Crayfish and Crab cocktail – I was really excited for this as it seemed to be a reinterpretation of my favourite dish from my first visit. It did not disappoint. My husband isn’t a fan of shellfish and even he dug in! There was a sort of crunchy, crumbled prawn cracker dust under the cocktail that was a really nice addition of texture and salt. I wasn’t that amped for the Hogget, lamb isn’t my thing but my husband all but licked the plate. That said for me the Israeli Cous Cous, pomegranate and tahini yogurt was an absolutely delicious combination. I know if my husband were to return and it was still on the menu he’d order this in a heartbeat. The duck curry again was not something I’d traditionally go for but it was the most amazing coconut-curry flavour and the duck skin was super crispy. I’d never seen rice formed in to a rectangle and fried before but it paired really nicely with the sweet curry sauce. At this point I should point out how AMAZING our waitress was. I’d asked if there was coriander in curry as I’m allergic. I said it’s no big deal if it was I just wouldn’t eat the curry. She came back to let us know that there was coriander as a garnish so they’d leave it off. When our heritage carrots came out she let us know she’d asked for the walnut dukkah on the side because it has coriander seed in it and she wasn’t sure if I was allergic to the seed as well as the leaf(I am). I never would have thought there might be coriander in that dish so it is fantastic to me that she thought laterally and went to the extra effort to make sure I was okay. Thank goodness she did because OMG that feta – I could eat it every day. I know that sounds bizarre but I love feta and I don’t know where they source it from but it is AMAZING. We were playing with the idea of dessert but in all honesty we probably ordered one dish too many already so we skipped it in the end. The value for money in my opinion is outstanding when you consider the quality of the food, unique dishes and fantastic service. I don’t know when I’ll be back in Glasgow again(sadface) but I will be stopping at Ox and Finch the next time I am!

Ate here recently with friends. The dishes come as and when ready, tapas style. The food was on the whole, delicious. The service was good, with the staff being happy to make recommendations. They were friendly and attentive. My personal preference though is for full-size dishes rather than tapas, so I’d rather have had a massive bowl of the duck and yellow curry sauce to myself — it is to. die. for. Would definitely return for another go, really enjoyed it.

I’ve visited here several times and always left really happy. The service, food and atmosphere is all top notch. Definitely one of the best restaurants in a Scotland and good value at that. The menu changes often and is always exciting, squid and blood orange anyone? It also relaxed enough that I’d be comfortable taking anyone for whatever occasion. Stop wasting time reading reviews and get it booked!

A five star experience from start to finish! I had been so excited to try ox and finch, and it did not disappoint. The service was impeccable throughout the meal; water was topped up and never allowed to be empty, their chat was great and they were just generally super efficient. Go team! Now, the food… Wow. Between 3 of us we chose 8 dishes, which was a feast. I particularly enjoyed the moreish hazelnut kale(not chewy at all!), the sweet potato fries(portion to myself next time…), and the confit duck, which fell off the bone into a lovely curry sauce. There were some great unique flavours and foods on the menu, like the tamarind and lime pulled pork nuggets and the fried lotus root crisps that came with the duck. That being said, it was also a really accessible menu and had something for everyone on it. I will definitely be back — and this time leave room for dessert and cocktails!

I expected big things from Ox & Finch given it’s current 4.5 star average and raving Unilocal reviews. Unfortunately it just didn’t live up to it’s hype, for me. We booked our dinner here several weeks in advance as, rumour has it, it’s the place to be. And at our booking time of 5.30pm on a Sunday it was mobbed. At 6pm, half full; and at 7pm, only a few tables occupied. The menu says all dishes are sharing platters and your order comes in no particular order. Yup, NO particular order! But the dishes are all small — far too small to be considered sufficient to share, unless you only want a bite of each. Myself and the Mr decided we’d share sweet potato fries, barbacoa beef, pork belly & italian sausage gnochi. The fries were really crispy and came with a chilli aoili which was really mild and complimented the fries. The pork belly was nice, but not something I’d order again. The gnochi was perfectly cooked with yellow and red peppers. The sausage was actually just wee crumbly bits of sausage meat dotted around the gnochi. For me, the barbacoaa beef dish was by far the best. It was shredded barbecued beef accompanied with some fresh nachos, and lettuce leaves filled with a mix of beans and sour cream/guacamole. Basically this is exactly what I would want if I ordered chilli nachos in a fancy restaurant. In fact, had the portion been 3 times the size it was, I’d quite happily have had just this for a main. Desert was panna cotta with coconut ice cream and a mango sauce. And. Was. AWESOME! Seriously, I could eat it every day! Our part of the bill(including a couple of beers) came to £45. Completely not worth it(in my opinion) for what was basically, just a few nice starters. I understand why people like this place, but when the food comes in a randomised fashion, you literally could be sat without anything while the rest of your party gets stuck in. I think passing this style of dining off as sharing tapas is a big olé West End slap in the face to Glasgows many other restaurants which do tapas well. If I could give this a 2.5 I would: 1 for the desert; 1 for the rest of the food; and 0.5 for the staff(who were just nice in a ‘I don’t have an opinion on them’ kind of way. But, I can’t do that so I’ll mark up to 3 with another 0.5 for the beer(a reasonably priced Joker IPA). I’m glad I tried it, but I won’t be rushing back.

I came here with my boyfriend for a celebratory dinner and now I know what all the fuss is about! This place books up fast– we called the day before and only managed to get a table at 9:15 on a Wednesday! But that didn’t bother us as we are late eaters anyway. I loved the ambiance and we were given the perfect corner table, ideal for a couple on a romantic night out. It seems like the perfect date place, with sharing dishes, dim lighting and smooth music. The service was pretty good, and they advised us to order 5 – 6 dishes to share as the portions are small but perfectly crafted. We got the confit duck with ‘crispy rice’ and green curry sauce, which has to be one of the best things I’ve eaten this year! Melt in the mouth duck which somehow paired perfectly with a sweet, lightly spiced curry and a fried rectangle of rice– which is a lot tastier than it sounds! The combination of the perfectly cooked meat, the crunchy rice, and the sweet sauce was heavenly! We also got the scallops with roe and samphire, another insanely tasty dish. Instead of putting lemon juice on the fish dishes, they made a lemony gel dotted around the plate. I thought this was such a clever and unique way of seasoning, making sure the lemon flavor was fresh and distinct with each bite! We also got a portion of the ham hock, rabbit and fois gras terrine with pear and gingerbread, and let me tell you– when you taste that fois gras… It’s like a little explosion of joy with each bite! We ordered the nectarine, proscuitto and mozarella salad which came with heaps of creamy, delectable buffalo mozarella, a big portion of proscuitto and refreshing slices of nectarine. Another winner! The tamarind panko pork came out next, which consisted of little fried balls of tangy pork– this dish was lovely but would have been even nicer with a bit of extra sauce on the side for dipping. Next, it was on to dessert, and as we couldn’t decide we went for the lavender honey and strawberry eton mess, and the lemon and earl grey baked alaska. I couldn’t really taste the earl grey in the baked alaska but I really enjoyed both dishes and found them the perfect end to our meal. We had a wee espresso after that and then got the bill. It came to £75 pounds which I don’t think is unreasonable considering we had a £25 bottle of wine(the malbec is delicious!) and were absolutely stuffed. It’s not an everyday meal price, no, but for a special occasion it’s really top notch. I can’t wait ’til the next excuse to eat at Ox and Finch!

Last night was my second visit and I loved every minute of the experience and every forkful of food that I ate. It was a lovely sunny evening and we sat at the window. We arrived a few minutes early so enjoyed a glass of Prosecco at the bar. This gave us the chance to take in more of the kitchen and bar workings than I’d previously seen. There are some very cool design touches that don’t feel over worked or forced. I ordered a very reasonably priced Viognier for £22 and we enjoyed an assortment of small plates, that happened to arrive as fish courses(as if for starters) then meet and sides(though this was by chance as, like most tapas style, plates arrive when they are ready in no particular order. The staff, as before, are very attentive, friendly, knowledgeable about what they are serving, but not stuffy or fussy. Six savoury plates, two desserts, one bottle of wine and two drinks at the bar came to £78, which I felt was more than worth it given the quality of the food and the very enjoyable atmosphere and surroundings. I feel that there is a great deal of thought and effort put into every single dish and I can only look forward to coming back again soon. PS I’ll include pic & descriptions of what we ate.

Having waited for the hype to die down around the Ox and Finch, I eagerly awaited a visit. Trying to get a table on a day when we were both off was proving difficult, but today we finally managed to make a trip… and boy was it worth the wait. Smaller than I expected, and absolutely mobbed, the restaurant is what I would describe as shabby chic. Recycled wood tables, exposed brick and original features, the décor is cool and contemporary yet rustic. The open kitchen is a nice touch and the chefs all seem so calm and relaxed considering the amount of covers they are doing per day. I could easily have ordered every dish on the menu. I really did have to reign myself in. The dishes come in no particular order and its described as ‘relaxed sharing dining’. Between 2 of us we ordered 6 dishes, and left feeling satisfied without being sickeningly full(like we normally are!!). The first dish to arrive was the Scallops with Tandoori Spiced Roe, Samphire and Lime. The scallops were perfectly cooked, as soft as butter with a caramelised edge. The sweetness teamed perfectly with the light spice of the roe, the sour lime and the salty samphire. We both wished we had ordered a plate each as we fought over the last scallop! The next dish we were presented with was Summer Truffle Polenta with Rocket and Parmesan. Having never tried Polenta before we were eager to try this. This is a bit of an acquired taste, the truffles were almost perfumey in flavour and the polenta had a thick semolina-like texture. We weren’t the hugest fans, but that didn’t stop me taking down most of it! The next dish was my favourite by a mile. Prawns, Squid, Chorizo and Morcillo with Smoked Paprika on Sourdough. WOW. The flavours in this dish were incredible. The sourdough went almost soggy but deliciously flavoured with all the taste from the mixed seafood and the oil from the chorizo. My first experience with Morcillo, which is like a Spanish take on Black Pudding and it paired with the other flavours perfectly. Absolutely divine. Martyn’s choice was next, Chicken and Tarragon Pie with Braised Baby Gem Lettuce. The chicken in the pie was soft and tender, and it wasn’t overly flavoured with Tarragon — which can be quite aniseedy. The braised lettuce had a strong, almost burnt flavour, that went well with the mild, creamy sauce in the pie. The puff pastry was crispy and flaky and mopped up the sauce beautifully. We hadn’t planned on ordering this dish, but we seen the table next to us order it and couldn’t resist. Lamb Rump with Baba Ganoush and Fatoosh Salad. Flavours reminiscent of the poshest kebab your ever likely to try. The salad was filled with flavours of mint and parsley, while the lamb was sprinkled with what I think was Sumac. The lamb was meltingly tender and was just delicious with the earthy Baba Ganoush. Finally, we ended with the Confit Duck Leg on Thai Yellow Curry with Cripsy Rice and Lotus Root Crisps. The duck had beautifully crispy skin yet was fall apart tender. The flavours in the Thai Yellow Curry were so delicate and you could pick out every ingredient. The Crispy rice was interesting and such a change in texture and taste from bog-standard basmati. We weren’t mad on the lotus root crisps as they had a strong, almost bitter aftertaste. |ts been a long time since we had a meal with such a vast array of flavours and textures and we really enjoyed the relaxed, sharing style. It really was some of the best food we’ve ever had the pleasure to eat. With 2 Coke, a lovely fresh Rose wine and some water we paid a paltry £53. Worth it for the dining experience alone… highly recommended!

Ox and finch prides itself on small plates to share. We ordered beetroot, goats cheese and candied fruit which was excellent alongside a plate of mozzarella, prosciutto and figs all bursting with flavour. The mushroom and talagio tart had a lovely taste albeit slightly over browned. The last plate was smoked haddock topped with an egg. Again very flavoursome although waitress forgot we had requested a hard cooked egg . We rounded up the lunch with coffee which arrived promptly and was most enjoyable. The restaurant itself was busy and atmospheric with discreet waiting staff. Would definitely return to try more of their interesting menu.

Visiting Ox and Finch is a little like stepping into another world, it’s like one of those amazing restaurant that you read about in glossy Sunday supplements. The rack of cookbooks by the kitchen hint at the depth of thought behind the menu, its influenced by a world of colours, flavours and textures Having tried numerous times to get a reservation/cheeky drop-in, we finally got a seat at 12 Monday lunchtime and were practically the first folk there. Looking into the open kitchen I could see some of the staff were still prepping for service. Thankfully that wasn’t to be some sort of omen, as we were quickly seated by one of the friendly staff who took a minute to explain the sharing plate philosophy of the service. Looking over the menu, I felt a slight tinge of panic as I wasn’t convinced there was a lot of veggie-friendly and appealing choices. The rest of my family ooh’d and ah’d over what was on offer whereas I took a second to peruse the drinks list, which offered a lot more choice apart from listing any soft drinks, so I ended up with the bottle of still water for the table. Thankfully, these short moments of trepidation were to be the last as we picked out an agreeable variety of dishes. I like that the food is served as and when it’s available, it provided a fun sense of rotation as peoples choices came out at different time & when they did they were fresh, not just pulled from under a heat lamp. Our order: Toasted Sourdough with beetroot and cumin Fig, mozzarella and prosciutto King prawn, harissa, feta and chickpeas Cauliflower cheese Chips with truffle salt and roasted garlic Aoli Venison pie Braised scallops with black pudding. I loved the beetroot and cumin dip, it was earthy with a hint of vinegar. The deep purple, slightly grainy texture worked so well on the sourdough. My brother really enjoyed the fig & mozzarella with prosciutto, so much so that his chat became a babbling stream of adjectives and superlatives. Trying the fig & mozzarella I could understand why, the mozzarella was almost buttery in taste, which contrasted with the sweetness of the figs. I didn’t try the king prawn dish, but it looked fantastic, lots of shredded greens sprinkled over the deep orange of the harissa. I was so happy with the cauliflower cheese(which was more of a cauliflower steak), served with lashings of deep, unctuous cheese sauce and a cheese crisp. The cauliflower had a slight char on one end which gave it a real punch of flavour. The chips were crispy & crunchy, but fluffy and light inside. The Aoli had a real smooth flavour which made the whole dish so moreish! My brother loved his scallops & venison dishes, my mum also complemented the flavour and texture of the scallops, saying they’d been cooked perfectly. The presentation of the venison pie dish was brilliant with the white of the silver skin onion & the colour of the carrot contrasting the deep, dark look of the pie. My brother loved the contrast of the richness of the venison, the sweetness of the carrot and the acidic onion. I love that the atmosphere isn’t pretentious, there were groups with kids, people on lunch dates and casual business lunches all enjoying the food. The décor is somewhat Mumford & sons trendy(yes that’s a thing) with stripped-back paint, bare ceilings and walls, you know they put effort into the boho-vintage décor. I like that they have an open kitchen, it really underpins the friendly, unpretentious service. I love ox and finch, I am so glad that Glasgow has another restaurant that doesn’t present itself as Michelin star hungry, pretentious or overly exclusive, but just gets on with cooking up flavour-packed food. Don’t think twice about it, whatever the occasion, come and try the food, you won’t be disappointed!

Spoiler: there’s a shocking confession at the end of this review. Read on! The restaurant only opened on Wednesday and we visited the following Monday for a 7pm booking. We arrived a little early so had a seat in the bar area for a drink. I ordered a large glass of pinot grigio(I was actually delivered a 250ml carafe which I didn’t realise until we got the bill) which was lovely and a little different from a normal pinot grigio. The restaurant space is beautiful — slightly rustic with lots of grey, a great feature display of the wines in copper baskets in a wall display. The kitchen is open so you can see right into it from the bar area(note: no swearing was detected during our visit) and the seating is split into booths and tables. The toilets are downstairs and there’s also a private dining space. We were seated at a booth for four which was handy as we needed all that extra table space for the food we ordered! The waitress offered to have the food staggered so we could fit it all in which was much appreciated. We tried: Smoked ham hock and cheddar croquettes £4.25 — these were amazeballs, literally. Wee balls of deliciousness. They are smaller than a standard croquette but there is probably 10 in the portion. Initial thoughts of it needing a dipping sauce were gone as soon as I bit into the croquette — creamy and an intense smoky ham flavour that really set these a world apart from other croquettes. These are some best croquettes I’ve ever eaten. The meal had started well! Charcuterie of the day(venison bresaola and pepper salami, I think) with tomato toast(pan catalan) — a generous portion of meat and perfectly soaked pan catalan. This also came with four giant green olives which I happily demolished. Crispy fried squid, chilli and orange salad with saffron aioli £6 — light, refreshing and with a lovely kick from the chunky-cut chilli. There could’ve been a few more orange segments but that’s me being really picky. Pea, broad bean, courgette and lemon orzo £3.50 — this dish looks pretty plain but just wait til you dive in, it is perfectly balanced with lemon and really lets the fresh flavours of the vegetables speak for themselves. Roast asparagus, poached egg and pancetta £5.50 — four stems of asparagus with a lot of pancetta and a perfectly poached egg. This pancetta is in a class of its own and any bacon lover with feel their heart swell(no heart attack jokes, please) when they try it. I’d normally prefer to be able to dip my egg into the poachy but that wasn’t really possible here — still, nothing to complain about. Braised ox cheek, cauliflower, thyme and bacon gremolata £7.50 — this is one of the more popular dishes and I can see why. It is the kind of dish you try and get instant«omg face»(perhaps that’s just us). The ox cheek was so tender and soft and the purée of cauliflower was the perfect balance to match the richness of the meat. The gremolata was a great addition to the dish to add some crunch. Confit chicken leg, peas, bacon and girolles £7 — another excellent dish with a good smattering of lightly cooked vegetables to balance the richness of the chicken leg. Seared scallops, lardo di colonnata and cauliflower purée £8.50 — proper plump scallops which were beautifully presented on a black plate. The same purée as with the ox cheek(that’s not a bad thing, the purée is delicious) and the scallops were so softly cooked(sous vide?) and then pan fried to add a crispness. For dessert, we opted to kind of share the dark chocolate cremeux, popcorn, peanuts and vanilla bean ice cream(the menu has it with banana ice cream but apparently it’s a popular option to switch it to vanilla). What I tried of this was delicious — decadent, sweet and a good portion size so you don’t get too weighed down. Our bill came in at around £70 which I think was pretty reasonable for the amount of food we ordered. The suggested amount is 2 – 3 plates per person and we had 4(and then dessert). Service was great and there was only one slight issue when I asked about whether one of the desserts had dairy in it — it took a few goes before I got someone to come back to tell me. That’s not something to grumble amount though as I’d rather that they double check with the kitchen to be sure, so that was good. This is definitely in the realm of «best meals I’ve eaten in Glasgow» … and that’s not something I say lightly.(That’s the shocking confession, in case you were wondering). I would happily order everything on the menu as all the dishes sound lovely, and the consistency across the dishes left me in awe of what they’re doing here already.
