Clyde Arc Bridge

I really like the squinty bridge as it is an iconic structure across the Clyde, a very useful north south link.
I’ve crossed the bridge in many ways, and was even able to walk across it before the traffic was officially allowed; the Doors Open Day in 2006 had a «pre opening» event where you could walk or cycle across before it opened.
There have been many changes to the Squinty bridge over the years, and traffic is currently 2 way on one side and buses only on the other. The pedestrian spaces are quite wide and it is a pleasant cycle route (but occasionally not that well maintained, hence 4 not 5 stars). If you drive, the one way system before and after the bridge has changed a few times, don’t trust your satnav, be wary of the bus only and taxi/​cycle only areas on the South exit!
On a sunny day you can see along the Clyde and at night it has pretty lights. The pedestrian outlook areas remind me of the scene on the Titanic where they both sit at the front of the ship where the mast is. you can feel like you are out in the Clyde and take great photos from these little platforms.

I feel like these days the Squinty Bridge (yeah, ok, «The Clyde Arc») is an iconic piece of the Clyde skyline in Glasgow. For that alone it’s worth a mention.
Quite aside from being a great photo oportunity (it’s lit up by night, if you get the chance) it’s also kind of a cool piece of civil engineering. Justification for that statement: Prior to the Clyde Arc, which opened in 2006, the last bridge that had opened to allow traffic to cross the Clyde was the Kindston Bridge in 1969. Thirty-​seven years before they decided they needed another bridge!
It’s a beautiful suspension bridge and it’s impressive to see those cables suspending these four lanes of traffic, especially given the bridge weighs an easy 800 tonnes before any traffic gets onto it. It’s a bit awkward for pedestrian traffic at both ends, but it’s still handy for accessing the SECC, Hydro and Science Centre. Plus, watch out for the little platforms half way across on each side that allow for further photo opportunities up and down the Clyde.

The Clyde Arc is the connective bridge for the Hydro/​SECC part of Finnieston, and the Glasgow Science Centre in Govan.
Completed in 2006, it had to close less than 18 months later when one of the steel suspension support ropes snapped — thankfully this happened in the middle of the night so no-​one was hurt.
It reopened at the end of 2008 and was officially renamed the Clyde Arc — although it’s locally known as the Squinty Bridge, thanks to the odd angle it takes crossing the Clyde.
I love the big, curvy design of this bridge, and especially like it at night when it’s lit up. You get a great view of Glasgow centre from it.
Throughout the year, the bridge is regularly closed to motor vehicles for various charity events, such as runs and cycle races.
The Squinty Bridge was Glasgows first contemporary designed bridge — now complimented by the Tradeston Bridge (AKA the Squiggly Bridge).

Ahhhh the squinty bridge… Brings back memories from when I was just a boy… Well ok not quite as it ain’t been around that long. It’s always sad to see a landmark with no reviews so it’s my duty to stick up a posting for this iconic Glasgow river crossing. (Iconic may be a slight stretch)
What can I say about it? The Squinty bridge is a bridge that is squint. It has some strange long metal connectors and allows the citizens of Glasgow to cross from one side of the river to the other. A vital role that in no way should be undermined. It is also good for the odd photograph when wandering along the Clyde.
Probably the most important thing I can say in this review is to to let tourists visiting Glasgow know that this is site that you should not rush to or in fact even walk slowly to. It’s just a bridge… that now has a review about it.

I like this Bridge it gets me to the Gym nice and quickly.
I love the look of it and it adds a certain glamor to the Clyde
