Alexander Thomson Hotel

All and all not too bad and will stay again depending on options. Was considering giving it two stars because: Some TV Channels (Mostly news channels I am interested in) did not work properly losing signal continuously and though it was reported it was not resolved. The shower just stopped working on one of the days and the only way to get it going was to set it to COLD. The residents bar is cash only and offers only canned and bottled drinks. In spite of this the staff is generally friendly and helpful. The lounge and breakfast area are pretty impressively decorated.

We paid £50/​night in June 2010 for three nights and I have mixed feelings about this hotel. Overall it’s a great value for the location, but after staying 3 nights i’m not sure it’s even that important to be right in this area since it’s mostly all businesses and pubs.
If this really is the area of town you want to stay it’s probably going to be the best bang for your buck. There is a very nice RadissonBLU right across the street that i would recommend you look at first to see if they have and deals since you will get a much nicer room.

What a strange little hotel this is. Whilst its situated in an excellent location (right slap bang next to Central Station and Buchanan Street), walking through its doors is like walking into a timewarp. Granted, I was a bit put off when myself and my boyfriend walked in on a Friday night to see two of the desk staff making prank calls to a hotel down the road!
Whilst our room was clean, it was shabby. The door didn’t lock properly, the toilet seat was broken, and the television was still hooked up to analogue (which meant we were only able to watch ITV and Channel 5). There was only one lift for six floors, and this was rickety and extremely slow.
The only saving grace of the Alexander Thomson is its dining room. Obviously a fair amount of money has been spent on this section of the hotel, with its opulent (almost OTT) dining room and waiting area. Whilst the breakfast wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, it did serve damn fine potato scones (which counts for a lot in my book). I could have done without the piped in muzak though, which really isn’t the kind of thing you want to face when you’re criminally, achingly hungover.
All in all, the Alexander Thomson is cheap and cheerful. It’s a place to stay if you’re going to Glasgow for a flying visit and don’t intend to stay in your room for very long. However, if you’re looking to use it for a dirty weekend, I’ll strongly recommend that you turn your attentions elsewhere!

Do NOT stay here. Unless you know what to expect from a two star hotel in Europe. I booked on their website about three months in advance. Their website promotes them as a luxury hotel. They are anything but.
The lobby is shabby, to put it nicely. The first room they gave us did not have a telephone, or hot water in the shower. The shower head also came out of the wall while trying to adjust the water.
We went downstairs and asked for a new room, they said they were booked. We went a day without a shower, because they didn’t move us. We had a day trip planned for the next morning, and missed it because there was no phone in the room to receive a wake up call, and our American cell phones did not work.
Our experience here was a huge back and forth hassle, and their management staff is unapologetic about their rooms and misleading website at best.
The manager finally got how bad the whole situation made him look, and gave us a new room. There were roses on the bed (no vase to put them in), bottles of water and goodies that weren’t in the other room, and a complimentary bottle of wine waiting for us at the bar. The bar, by the by, is also a dump.
Now, they’re in the process of remodeling their rooms. Which is why the receptionist said they were booked full. She tried to put us in one of the non-​remodeled room, and I swear to God, it was the nastiest hotel room I’ve ever seen in my life.
The manager told us that we would not be able to find a decent hotel for the rice we paid at theirs, 55p, but the rooms at the Radisson next door, when booked in advance, are only 65p. Certainly worth the extra 10p.
We wanted to switch hotels, but it was their national holiday and every room in town was booked. We were stuck. We made the best of it, and had a blast in Glasgow. I will be back, but I will never stay in an RNG Hotel again in my life. Someone should contact the tourist board and report them for calling themselves a three star hotel.
Oh, and to top it all off, we did not receive a discount for our first night, even though we had no hot water to shower in.

Excellent location, minutes from the railway station and shopping areas. That’s where the good bits stop. The staff were pleasant but the rooms were quite poor. Everything had an air of neglect. From the peeling ceiling to the cracked sink, broken window, shutter that would not close, all in all it gave an air of decay. As purely a place to crash it was fine but I would not travel there with a loved one for a weekend away. They do not charge items to the room as it is against policy. The wine by the glass is £4 for 175ml and tastes awful. Buy your own and take it to your room. Encouragingly we were allowed to take brought in take-​away food to consume in the residents bar.
The breakfast was not good at all. Eggs swimming in oil, underdone sausages, stuck together bacon, tinned mushrooms, rubber potato pancakes. Terrible coffee. Horrible. Would stay again but bring my own alcohol and eat breakfast out.

This hotel is one of the better 3 star hotels i have stayed in. It has quite recently been decorated so it is still fresh and nice. It is near loads of stuff such as the kelvingrove art gallery, the burrel collection and the museum of transport. Check in is from 2 and they get through chck in quickly. Better than some hotels in the area where you can not check in until after 3 or 4 pm. Check out is 10.30 which i think is a bit early compared to others but they let u check in early. They take a variety of payments including american express. Worth a stay and the prices aint bad.
