This place was a good find as we walked from our hotel towards Edinburgh castle, decided to eat here ., we were not disappointed. My friend had the seafood curry while I had pot of mussels with chips. The mussels were delicious and on par with mussel inn. I can no longer order mussels from café rouge as they are not the same ha ha. It was quite busy as it was lunchtime and lot of tables of four or more people but we weren’t squeezed into a corner but a nice table near the front area. Recommend this place if you are this side of the castle!!!

This place has been a firm favourite of mine for about 18 months now. It’s always been number one when I’m suggesting places to eat out to other people. The food is excellent and I love the location. The menu is fantastic and there’s something for everyone. With this in mind, I booked a table for myself and two friends who were visiting from England last night. Imagine my horror, when almost immediately, our waitress ruined the night. Her attitude was downright unpleasant; she spoke over my friend when taking drinks orders, then snapped at her to ”wait one moment” before flouncing off with an air of one who has a gigantic chip on their shoulder. I was more than a tad embarrassed that this is how visitors to our country were being spoken to in a supposed respectable establishment. We concluded that she must have been having a bad day and, while still unhappy with her lack of professionalism, we were willing to just let it go and get on with enjoying our evening. We had our starters and as always the food was brilliant; but then Ms Attitude was back to clear our table, knocking another waitress away in the process she took away the bread we’d ordered. My friend asked her to bring it back and when she came to our table with it she said ”would you like three plates for your one piece of bread?” In the most sarcastic and unnecessary tone I’ve ever heard(and I am the queen of sarcasm). At this point I asked the front of house to change our waitress because she was ruining our night and being downright rude. Now, we all know that people in the service industry and any kind of customer service face a multitude of awfulness from the general public, which is why decent people will generally tip them when they’ve done a good job. However, this girl is asking for all the shitstorms the people of Edinburgh could possibly dream up when dining in this place, so much so that I’ve not even bothered to talk about the food in this review — that’s how bad her service was. It completely overshadowed the food, wine and general atmosphere. So at the end of the meal(after spending a lot of money in there) when we were paying the bill, we asked the front of house waitress if Ms Attitude was always so unpleasant to customers. She told us that this girl had thought my friend was someone who was rude to her in a club once. Bear in mind that my friends have been in Edinburgh a sum total of twice and have never been in any of the clubs in the city. Now if this is to be believed(which is pushing it for me) and she honestly thought my friend was someone who’d been abusive to her previously, why did she not arrange for someone else to wait our table? I can’t express how disappointed I am with how our meal panned out last night. I can say that I won’t be back, despite the excellent food, I have no desire to pay to be treated like crap and then lied to about why, ever again.

Was our first trip to Scotland and Unilocal pointed us to this place. Our experience was absolutely divine. Came in from the rain and they took our wet coats to hang an sat us down. Started with a craft beer and some haggis soufflé! 1st time for that, and it wasn’t too bad. For dinner my wife got the 14oz ribeye and we also go the seafood special for 2. Absolutely AMAZING!!! Gr8 service from the staff and our server Gary was perfect. Extremely satisfied with our time at this fine establishment.

I went there for a casual lunch date with my SO. It is lovely. They have a pretty reasonable lunch and even dinner deal if you want to fine dine on a budget. I had the steak and it was great! So good and nicely flavored and cooked just right. The mussels are great! They have a Thai inspired flavor which is not bad if you want something different. I do recommend getting the French fries fries in beef jus. It’s good and so much better than their plain potatoes.

the food is so bad here. We had the seabass and it’s not fresh at all. The steak is dry and hard. The mussel is not fully cooked. The shrimp inside the mussel is frozen and dead for long time as the meat just melted.

Compared to the Outsider which has better steaks at the same price, this was disappointing. The steaks aren’t nearly as good nor is the ambience. I had the smoked salmon app which was good but the steak quality was inferior to our next meal at the Outsider.

Had a solo birthday meal here in September. I know, bad planning but whatever. Walked in without a reservation, got seated upstairs. Had an excellent meal of raw oysters, mixed seafood platter, and a sticky pudding & the best shot of single malt I’ve had in a while! It turned out to be a small batch produced, Talisker 5 yr. It was so good, I took the time to track the bottle down in a small shop(The Whiskey Shop on Victoria St) and bought 2 bottles to bring back home!

Our meal was stupendous! Got the surf and turf. Ribeye steak was juicy and cooked perfectly. The mussels were cooked in a whisky, bacon and cream sauce. OMG! Unbelievably delectable. Portion sizes were enormous. Smoked salmon duo for appetizer was just as good as the main course. Overall one of the best meals we had in Edinburgh.

The food was very good! It is indeed very mussel and steak which was what we were looking for. The service was good but I would not recommend it for a romantic dinner. Would definitely come back though…

Right across the street from my hotel, the Apex, and couldn’t have been more perfect. I gorged myself on a bucket of the Scottish Blue Mussels, cooked in a chilli, ginger, lime sauce. Delicious. washed it down with a local ale and absorbed the conversations in 5 languages around me. Lots of Asians eating here, lots of Eastern Europeans, lots of Spaniards. It must be good then, right? Nice price, efficient service, great place. Recommended!

This is one of the first places in a long time that I don’t have a quirky story or silly anecdote about… and you know what? That’s ok. It makes total sense. If I could sum this spot up in one word, it would be: Consistent. It’s consistently good food. Period. Granted, each time i’ve come here, I’ve stuck with wine, oysters and mussels — so I haven’t strayed too far into the menu but really, I’ve never needed to. The mussels are delicious(I’m especially fond of the whisky/bacon combo). The wine list is good. The service is pleasant. The prices are reasonable. The mussels are great. Voila! Case closed.

I’d recommend any seafood lover to go to the Mussels and Steaks Bar. Excellent food, great service and located in a bustling part of town. The décor is basic but the great tasting fresh food and friendly service more then made up for it. All the food was fresh, vibrant and flavorful. Our group tried the seafood platter, the special lobster dish, curry mussels and the surf and turf combinations. No one had a complaint about any of the dishes. The best part was the double fried chips in drippings.

We ordered the big plate for 2 persons, which has a lot of mussels, clams, crab legs, prawns, and couple oysters. It was steamed well in white cream sauce. The seafood was cooked just right. The service was very swift and good. Highly recommended.

I went to The Mussel and Steak Bar after a date at the nearby BrewDog. The date was going well(oh la la) so he suggested stopping by this place for dinner. It was a Friday around 730 and we didn’t have reservations, but we were able to be seated for a table for two. The manager was cheeky and ribbed my date a little bit for pretending to look in the reservation book to pretend to be someone else, which was very amusing. We were able to sit upstairs and I thought the place had lovely ambience. We started with some fried goat cheese balls and garlic grilled mussels. Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of mussels but I thought«When in Rome!» and tried them. They were really tasty, but I’m not sure garlic was the best date choice! Anyway, for my main I had a special fried plaice with black pudding mash that was extremely tasty. My date had a steak that he enjoyed. Topped off with a nice glass of house white and I was a happy camper. I will definitely come back to The Mussel and Steak for another nice dinner in the future when I’m in the area, which of course I will be because I do love BrewDog…

Been coming here after Scotland Wales rugby games, for many years now. Top tip is to book ahead as it always seems busy. The service is good, the menu has a lot of choice and the wine very reasonable. The good is great. From pots of mussels, plates of cooked scallop and oyster served on ice for starters, through juicy well cooked steaks and chips cooked in dripping! If you have space left the desert menu is also decent! Well worth a visit if you are in town.

Disappointed. With a rating of 4 and half stars in Unilocal lured us to the cosy corner of Victoria Street around our hotel when we are visiting Edinburgh. One of the East European Looking waitresses was extremely rude when we asked if they still serve a Scallop dish(from a photo in Unilocal page for this restaurant), she replied with a cold expression on her face and told us it’s not on the menu, suggested us to read the menu carefully and walked away without even we could have replied or order anything from the menu. Later we were explained by another waiter some of the dishes are seasonal and the chef changes the special menu from time to time. The bizarreness of the rude and impatient behaviour by that waitress was lingering through the entire poorly prepared 2 courses meal which we waited a long time to receive. If it is cheap and rude, nothing helps. Any sensible people wouldn’t go there again.

I went here recently for a colleague’s leaving lunch. There were 8 of us in our group & it was quite busy. We ordered from the lunch menu — 1 course £7.95, 2 courses £9.95 or 3 courses £11.95. Most of the group ordered starters & the haggis dish was the most popular. I saved myself for the 6oz rump steak which was awesome. The chips were chunky & crispy, just how I like them & the mushrooms were earthy & full of flavour. My steak was perfectly cooked, moist & melt in the mouth. A colleague had the seafood curry. It was full of enormous mussels & other fishy delights. It smelled amazing & he said it was the best fish curry he’s had. The only problem being that it took so long to arrive he didn’t have time to finish it before having to get back to work. Unfortunately the service was slow and I we all had to skip dessert & coffee as we needed to get back to the office(despite being there over 90 mins). A lovely lunch with great food & company. It was a shame the slow service meant it was a wee bit stressful. The front of house staff were lovely maybe they just need another pair of hands in the kitchen.
