This isn’t a shop you’d usually make specific effort to visit, but it always seems to come in handy. City Road is a bustling suburban highstreet, so you’d expect there to be more of these shops, but at the Newport Road end they are a rarity. This shops seems to have a bit of everything, and my boyfriend is always chuffed that they stock Lucky Strikes. As a mini-market type place I have seen couples from nearby doing their main shop, and making the most of their stock of ethnic and world foods. The staff are always friendly, although there does often seem to be a large group of confused looking male youths hanging out by the counter that aren’t really sure how to queue. Just be brave and step forward! Also, with so many bars up this end, there is a handy cash point outside that doesn’t charge. Again, the large groups hanging around do put me off, but I’ve never seen any trouble.

Shop Right is like a slogan of suggestion to get customers through the doors. A local store, that has a similar shopping stock to Coop and Spar. This store is not quite like other store along city road, having a similar layout and stock as a newsagents. As with most newsagents they have all the standard magazines, newspapers, sweets, drinks and convenience food you would expect to find. On the outside of the shop front is a much need ATM especially if you’re drinking in the Ernest Willow. There’s a second ATM inside for those who are in a rush. As a local shop serving the community it stocks exotic foods as well to appeal to the roath community.

Shop Right is one of those locally owned mini-supermarkets that caters to everyone with a particular department of stock for a certain subset of the population. Like an Indian Happy Shopper, almost. It serves its purpose as the local all-purpose mini market, for anything you forgot to buy at the supermarket, as well as stocking a large selection of non-British foods for the local community. It’s a great little shop for getting in sandwiches or snacks if you’re in a bit of a hurry, and it’s one of the only places on City Road to stock 7-Up Cherry, which instantly gets it its four stars here. It also serves as one of the only two cash points on City Road, which is invariably what most of the population use it for. I’m going to let you in on a little secret here though; there’s another cash point inside, just to the right of the door. It’s signposted, but even when the queue outside is seven or eight people deep, no one will be using the indoors one. But don’t tell anyone, otherwise everyone will start using it…
