Cardiff Bay Railway Station

Most of the stars are for the train rather than the station. It’s a pretty functional station where anything that the train company doesn’t think needs to be there isn’t. There is a shelter, CCTV surveillance and a platform. You’ll need to buy a ticket on the train as Queen Street has barriers.
Service is frequent and when i visited, had an old diesel train similar to the ones I used to travel on when I was a kid. This added a bit of heritage interest to what could be a pretty boring short line.

its pathetic that cardiff tiger bay is left with only one railway track, especially when the place used to be covered in railway lines and sidings. check your timetables well, as you could quite easily find yourself marooned down there

In great need of refurbishment, this small station’s only saving grace is it’s link from Central Cardiff to the popular Bay area of town. At absolute best, the station could be described as rustic, but in truth, a more accurate description would be that it is decaying. With only a single platform, the station exists solely to offer people an alternative way of commuting to the Bay as apposed to bus or car.
The problem with such a poorly maintained and scruffy looking station is that it’s entirely out of character with the rest of Cardiff Bay. With massive redevelopment, a vast number of impressive new buildings and countless stylish restaurants, this shouldn’t be the first impression some people will unfortunately have of Cardiff Bay. It wouldn’t take much to transform this into the modern and well maintained station is desperately needs to become.

This is really not a station to write home about, it’s pretty basic. In fact when I think about it, maybe they should give it a revamp, after all, this is Cardiff Bay’s main station, somewhere visitors from all over will be traveling to.
It has a little shelter, that’s about it. It is the end of the line and purely used to transport people from Queen Street station to the bay. One platform. You know the more I write about this station, the more I realize now how ludicrous it is that I haven’t thought about how crap it is, seeing as so much money has been plowed into Mermaid key, in fact I’m changing my star rating to a one.
It’s a horrible little station, but it gets you to the Bay and I suppose that is what is most important. Trains normally go from Queen Street every 20 mins or so, but beware, the service ends pretty early at about 11pm, so you may find yourself walking back to the centre.

I think everything that could of been said about Cardiff Bay station has been said. Yes there is one platform in use and its pretty much just used to shuttle people from the Bay to the city centre and vice versa. It is very close to the Mermaid Quay, Millennium Centre and to the National Assembly for Wales so unless your planning on hiking or getting one of the regular buses to the Bay then you will probably end up at Cardiff Bay station at some point.
I was discussing with my friend the other day that although the station is in bad need of repair and is pretty much derelict something should be done to preserve it. The station itself sits on Lloyd George Avenue, named after our only Prime Minister who first language was Welsh and for some reason there is a real sense of history with this place that one could easily picture a few gentleman with top hats waiting for a steam locomotive to take them to their destination.

What can I say about this station that hasn’t already been said?
The poor place is in desperate need of a cleanup.
It is charming and old fashioned (which I love, don’t get me wrong), I just don’t get how the city can pump so much cash into Mermaid Quay while ignoring the main method of transport used to get there.
Keep everything the way it is, but I’d suggest just sprucing up the areas where it looks like a scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I like it because the station lacks the crowds of its Central and Queen Street sisters, but on certain occasions (like Armed Forces Day when Prince Charles made an appearance) I’ve had to wait for the next train because the one I was supposed to board was filled to the brim.
If I’m in the Bay and need to get anywhere near town, I normally just walk or take the Bay Car, which provides a number of stops instead of just one.

Cardiff Bay Railway Station shunts people to and fro between Cardiff Bay and Cardiff Queen Street station (near the end of one of the main pedestrianised shopping areas), providing a link between the two main commercial areas of the city. Services run every 12 minutes from 0630 – 2330 from Monday to Saturday, and from 1100 – 1630 on Sundays.
As it only serves this one route, the Bay’s station is predictably tiny and lacking in facilities, with just one platform in use — but it does hold a certain charm because it’s so old-​fashioned. In fact, for a combination of reasons (including the fact it was the origin of the first steam-​powered passenger train service in Wales), the station is actually a Grade II* listed building.
Once you get off the train at Cardiff Bay it’s not exactly right at the heart of the Bay action — but you’re within a short walking distance of the Wales Millennium Centre, and from there it’s not far to reach the restaurants and bars of Mermaid Quay.

Cardiff Bay Railway Station is like taking a step back in time. It’s so small and quaint that you can almost imagine yourself being bungled into a train with a suitcase and a brown label with your name around you neck as you’re sent away into the country before the bombs start falling.
Only one train goes back and forth from this station, between here and Cardiff Queen Street. Back and forth and back and forth all day long, every 12 minutes — 6 minutes there and 6 minutes back. The train itself is even old fashioned, with its doors that you have to lean out of the window to open form the outside. None of these fancy flashing button for this leg of the journey!
Although fun and something a little bit different (I’m assuming here that they’re going for a traditional system, not that the train is just old and dilapidated), this service is not really suitable for people with prams, luggage or for those in a wheelchair. Fortunately there’s a bus service that is just around the corner.
The station is also a little out of the main hub of the Bay; although it’s easy to find, yo do end up walking past a little bit of a ghost town to get there. Trees growing out of boarded up buildings and the like (although it would make a lovely photograph).

The success of Cardiff Bay as ‘the place to be’ (with the new opera house etc.) keeps this incongruous little branch line alive, albeit with just one old train that goes back and forth, back and forth.
If you’re travelling from outside Cardiff to Cardiff Bay, bear in mind that you’ll probably have to change at Cardiff Central– then at Cardiff Queen Street– before you can get off at Cardiff Bay. Depending on the train times when you’re arriving, it’s probably quicker to walk (takes 30 minutes)!

Cardiff Bay Station should be renamed ‘Cardiff Bay Platform’ because that’s all there is: one platform. The train comes down from Queen Street station, sits a while in the Bay, then goes back to Queen Street. The journey takes around five minutes and the train comprises of one old carriage with old fashioned doors that open using a handle (!) and have windows that slide down. It’s always nice and warm and the conductor must have the patience of a Saint to do that monotinous journey for hours and still be able to smile!
Mind you, you get off the train and your smack bang in the middle of the Bay. The last train to town goes quite late, if I remember right — something like 10.50pm — so i’t well handy.
