I have had this place bookmarked on Unilocal since moving here. I was so thrilled when my boyfriend reserved us a table for a Sunday picnic afternoon tea. It is located on the 4th floor of Selfridges with only a few tables overlooking the Bull Ring. We were sat immediately in a crowded section of tiny tables. I assumed since we booked the afternoon tea we would be sat at a one of the many empty nice large tables along the balcony. Maybe you need to request it? So we wedged into our tiny table and waited… It was about ten minutes until we were waited on. There definitely was not a heavy focus on customer service here. After our order was placed, the table next to us had to call over our server just to take their order. I wouldn’t expect that from an upscale brasserie like the Balcony. The cocktails here were so tasty. I cannot remember my drink name(Mexican bird maybe) but it had tequila and elderflower. It was served in an unusual glass that reminded me of a reed diffuser jar. I really liked it. The afternoon tea was so cute. It literally was served on a mini picnic table. It was the main reason I wanted to come… that is how cute the picnic table is. The sandwich selection consisted of tuna, cheese and tomato, and coronation chicken. Each was served on a little bun. Desserts were two macarons and a red velvet cupcake. And lastly, two scones with cream and jam finished off the selection. I absolutely loved it! We were each served a surprisingly large pot of loose leaf tea. I think we each made 4 cups out of it! Just be careful not to burn yourself as the teapots are metal and lids don’t latch on. I really did enjoy the afternoon tea at the Balcony. Both the food and drinks were fantastic. I do think the service we experienced was sub par for this type of establishment, which is why I’m giving it a 3. I expected a lot more from Selfridges. But I think I would give it another shot. The fish and chips sure looked great.

This is a lovely English brasserie and champagne bar located on the top floor of Selfridges. As the name implies, it is a balcony that overlooks the Bullring shopping centre. Lovely and clean environment, comfy chairs and brilliant service. The menu is not too fussy, with a lot of popular favourites on offer. I went with the ‘Lake District cheese & bacon burger with fries’(£14) and my friend ‘halloumi, red pepper, avocado, sweet chilli burger with polenta chips’(£12.50). Both were very enjoyable, well presented, and well seasoned. I then tried their americano coffee, a lovely bean, a good job with the extraction, and they even included warm milk to not ruin the delicate tastes. Price isn’t too bad, three courses you can have for £30−40 per head excluding drinks.

After a few hours of shopping and wanting to have a drink in classy surroundings I decided this bar fitted the bill perfectly. The balcony bar and brassiere is situated within Selfridges inside the Bull Ring shopping centre and I decided that a seat on a high stool close to the edge of the bar would be a good position so I could take in the atmosphere. The bar staff were friendly and attentive with our waitress originally from France. At this point my partner(who lived in France for a little while) spoke to her about the delights of the country. I ordered a mojito and let’s just say it was the best mojito I have tasted. Superb! My partner agreed and was slightly envious that he had ordered draught beer instead. The surroundings of the bar and the décor are lovely, and although I didn’t look at the menu this time I saw lots of lovely food go past me like mini burgers and fries. I will be looking to return so I can sample the food on offer.

I came here for an event with a friend which had annoyingly been cancelled(through lack of interest!), but we decided to stay anyway. They have happy hour cocktails from 5−7pm at £5 each-very nice passion fruit Bellini! Other cocktails and much more pricey but probably worth it for a special treat/occasion. The food menu doesn’t have a wide range, but there is probably something for everyone. I chose the avocado and chilli burger with polenta fries which was pretty tasty. There are sharing platters on the menu, starters and desserts, all ranging from £4−13. The setting at the top of selfridges, overlooking the shops of the bullring was veery relaxing. The seating was comfortable and there was a quiet hum of people around. The staff were attentive and gave us 20% off for our disappointment of the event cancellation. I would definitely go back again!

Always being on the look out for hot new businesses located in Birmingham, I came across«The Balcony» recently. I had been to Searcy’s Rep venue for afternoon tea, but was dying to try out this place once I had heard about it. A champagne bar with a posh brunch menu situated in one of the most iconic buildings in Birmingham? What’s not to love! Hearing that Birmingham Elite Erica G. was coming to the end of her exams provided the perfect excuse to give this a go as a «School’s Out» celebration. I was pleased to find a voucher on Livingsocial for Brunch at a very reasonable price, so I jumped on this and negotiated a time with Miss G to go down and give it a try! First thing to note… Their phone systems are a nightmare. I rang about 3 or 4 times and left a message for someone to get back to me. I then got a call back(and missed it), so tried again several times before getting a call back and booking it in. I would recommend the booking system on their website rather than calling(just to save hassle). The lady I ended up talking to was friendly and helpful and gave me the time and date I asked for without any problems at all. On Friday morning I met Erica rather hungry(I had obviously skipped breakfast) and we went in hunt of the venue. Now, it’s not hard to find(it’s on level 4 of Selfridges — so a level up from where you would enter from New Street Level), but if you’re not familiar with the layout of the department store, give yourself an extra couple of minutes to locate the venue. Saying that, we were about 5 minutes late and this wasn’t a problem. The venue has a definite air of opulence about it. Being inside the Bullring, but above the majority of shops you can sit and enjoy the ambient level of noise radiating from the rest of the shopping centre(without it being too noisy). Once we were seated, we were presented with the Brunch menu(as pictured). All of our servers were efficient, polite and helpful throughout. Unlike some voucher experiences, we weren’t treated any differently from the other clientele in the venue at the time. Once we had perused the menu, it was clear that a breakfast with fried chicken was a must! We were also asked our choice of hot drink to accompany our brunch and offered a bottle of water for the table. The drinks were bought out promptly and were pleasing, if not the best coffee I have ever had. The real star of the show was the food. We had both gone for the poached egg, waffle and friend chicken option and were not disappointed. Everything had obviously been cooked fresh and was hot and delicious. The whole experience was relaxing, opulent and what I had hoped it would be. The service was friendly and prompt and the food was fantastic. For what I paid for the voucher(around £11), it was well worth the money. I didn’t check out what it would cost without a deal; but if you’re looking for a brunch treat(or a celebratory glass of champagne in a great venue) — give it a go!
