Plaza Guavate is a small new cafeteria/take-out across from the Hotel Plaza de Armas Hotel in Old San Juan. Showcased in the window is its star attraction, a whole open fire-roasted suckling pig, Lechón Asado. We went to a number of Puerto Rican restaurants during our stay and this was the only one where we saw the whole pig. We were already heading to another lunch appointment but came back a few days later. The Lechón was as awesome as it looked! Moist and flavorful! The cafeteria doesn’t have a lot of entrée selections, but there were enough sides to make it difficult to choose two. Arroz con gandules, rice with pigeon peas, was very good. The boiled yuca was a typically heavy starch. Their homemade chili sauce was fiery HOT! With a can of soda, lunch came to less than $ 10. Plaza Guavate is open for breakfast and lunch, with friendly and helpful service. It’s an authentic, delicious taste of Puerto Rican cuisine that won’t break your wallet.
