Easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given. This place not only makes amazing, authentic Portuguese egg tarts(pasteis de nata), they also have an open kitchen where you can see the entire, beautiful baking process. Egg tarts are 1 Euro each, the crust perfectly crispy and the custard simply delicious. They told me they produce 4000 – 6000 egg tarts a day. That’s quality and efficiency at its finest. Egg tarts are good for 2 days, so take some back with you to share with friends, or just hoard for yourself ;)

You cannot go to Lisbon and not go to a café thAt does nothing but coffee and pastel de nata. Best decision I ever made was choosing a restaurant for dinner right near this place. Omg yum! Worth a trek. We went back for seconds. And only the knowledge we’d already had two each earlier in the day stopped us from getting a third!

Better than Belem in my opinion! The crust has a perfect crunch and does not get soggy once in my mouth! The quality control was also significantly better with all the tarts we ordered equal in every aspect!

Solid. Always fresh, quit turn around, plenty of counter space. € 1 /pastel de nata. As others have stated, these are a little sweeter and not quite as eggy as Pastéis de Belém. I think this comes down to personal preference. Manteigaria is certainly more centrally located.

I have never had an egg tart that was as good as this one, and may never have another as good as this one. You can’t come to Lisbon without getting a pastel de nata, and this place knows what they are doing. You can’t walk around Lisbon without seeing these egg tarts in every bakery window, but skip all of those and come here instead. When a place only makes one thing, you know it has to be done well, or they would soon be out of business. This place is open early at 8 am and until midnight, so there’s no excuse to not come here. Or even better, you can come here multiple times in a day: maybe for breakfast, an afternoon snack, dessert, or all of the above. They seem to continuously churn out egg tarts, and you can see them making the custard, filling the pastry dough with custard, and baking, behind the glass. There’s limited space to eat inside, but there is a long counter where you can sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon and powdered sugar(highly recommended to add both!) to your egg tart, and eat your pastries while watching the workers work their magic. The egg tart itself is heavenly — they are fresh and warm, and the crust is flaky and perfect, and the inside is custardy and soft. I tried to eat the one egg tart I had slowly, so that I could savor each bite, and then when I finished I wanted to eat 2 more. I should have ordered 2 of them for myself instead of just one, and didn’t have time to get another one since I had to go to the airport. For 1 Euro each, it’s worth every penny and every calorie. My only regret is not coming here earlier so that I could have eaten more than one on multiple occasions. I would definitely come back here again and again, and recommend it to everyone who comes to Lisbon. When we left, my boyfriend said, «I wish we had just eaten 10 of these for lunch». Amen.

When a place just makes one thing, you know it will have to be good. The egg custard tart here was amazing. The custard was more custard than solid like it is in the states. The crust is very flakey. Nice to wash it down here with an espresso.

Great place for an espresso and a treat! Their pasteis de natas is rich, creamy and delicious. Everything I could say has been captured in the other reviews so just get here!

Great custard tarts, they even let you watch the operation. Remember I don’t like sweet stuff. But this was amazing… So perfect on the texture and sweetness. And the staff was very friendly

They ring the bell when the fresh batches are ready — that’s the cue to queue! Best pasteis de nata ever! Flaky, buttery tart and warm, slightly cinnamony, runny custard — it’s pure perfection. Be sure to sprinkle a little powdered sugar and cinnamon, too. In comparison, Pasteis de Belem has a tougher, chewier, crispy(almost stale-like) tart and their custard is slightly thicker, less smooth, and not as sweet as Manteigaria. I much prefer Manteigaria, and their location is a huge bonus. These are also cheaper too — only a euro each! Save yourself a couple euros on transportation to Belem and buy a few more tarts here. Forewarning, these tarts don’t keep well, nothing against Manteigaria but just Portuguese tarts in general. Lisbon was my last stop on my 2 and a half month backpacking trip and thought these would be a nice treat for my family. They pack nicely in pairs or in groups of 6. We couldn’t figure out the«right» way to heat them back to life, so we ended up just tossing them — all 18 of them.):

This is the best portuguese tart that I have ever had. This is even better than any I’ve had in other parts of Lisbon, including Pastel de Belem. I don’t often give 5 stars or feel undoubtedly compelled to do so, but in this case, Manteigaria is worth it! These tarts are perfect in so many ways — the custard is great, the tart itself is perfectly cooked and has an incredible consistency, the temperature is great, etc. I don’t think there is any reason to try portuguese tarts at any restaurant besides this place. Also, I plan on spending my retirement living in this restaurant so that I can be guaranteed to eat these every single day of my life.

Better then belèm pastries in my opinion! Thats right I said it! I can’t tell you what the difference is, but I like the Manteigaria custard better, its was lighter and had hint of cinnamon. The pastry crust also tasted different, a bit flakey. Its hard to really break down the Nata world, but after eating like hundreds of them I know this place and Nata Lisbo are the best. Manteigaria is small but the nata’s come out hot and fresh right on the spot! I would just stay there forever and keep eating all day! haha.

the absolute BESTTTT portugese tarts u will get. HOT — FLAKY — CRISPY — melt in your mouth amazingnesss! the tart itself is just FANTASTICCCC and the middle — my. god. — it just oozes out and is the perfect texture, and sweet but not overly sweet. in comparison with pasteis de belem I have to say that the tart is better here but the filling is better there. both 5 stars though :) This location is much more central though. you will be ruined for life for all other portugese tarts. I think about them from time to time and I’m sure it doesn’t get any better than here. actually life changing when you compare it to other ones you’ve had!

So you are looking for good Pasteis de natas(egg tart pastry) and don’t want to trek it out to belem? This is your spot. They say the best place is Pasteis de Belem — I think Manteigaria is better, but only marginally so. Each pasteis costs 1 euro. Unlikely there is a line here and the place is open till midnight. What else can you ask for? There’s no tables here, go across the street to the plaza and enjoy outdoors. I would recommend ordering 2… but honestly, I could eat a dozen of these things, you were warned!

I grew up eating Chinese egg tarts. In the last decade or so, some Chinese bakeries in NYC even started selling Portuguese egg tarts, which are more custardy than the Chinese version. So when my travel journey brought me to Portugal, I KNEW I just HAD to eat some pastéis de nata! On the agenda: Pastéis de Belem(the original) and Manteigaria(based on the reviews alone). I stayed at the Sofitel on Avenida de Liberdade. Manteigaria is walking distance from Sofitel(about a 20 minute walk) so I ended up here twice. WOW. There was a short line when we arrived, but once we were up, a very friendly guy helped us right away. I ordered 8(2 for each of us) and was given 6 in one box and 2 in a small, totally adorable box. The total? 8 €!! Only 1 € each. The pastél de nata is smaller than its Chinese counterpart. But the crust is SO flaky and the filling SOCREAMY. Even though they were sitting on the counter when we ordered, they were still warm! We walked outside and ate them along the side of the store. I was so excited to eat them that I forgot about the cinnamon and powdered sugar. Oops. They were so good without the toppings though. The custard is like… melt-in-your-mouth, I-could-drink-this, life-changing goodness. SERIOUSLY. That night my friend Kim and I literally discussed HOW we were going to take some of these babies home with us. The next night we went to Pastéis de Belem and of the two, I prefer the natas from there, only because the custard was less sweet and tasted more similar to the ones I grew up eating. The ones at Manteigaria are still deserving of 5 stars though. Ended up at Manteigaria on our last night and brought back 5 ½ dozen!!! Totally worth lugging them in my carry on. Everyone I gave them to RAVED about them. P. S. they ring a bell when a new batch is available. But my preference is eating them when they’ve cooled off. :)

Is there a better place for pastel de natas? In my books, absolutely NOT! I ate a lot of those gooey egg pastries around Lisbon. But this place stole my heart. I was living 200m from this place and was there every single day. The place is small and that’s all they make all day everyday! And it’s opened till midnight which is so great. I had heard a lot about Belem but honestly this place took the cake, or in this case the pastry *wink* So if you’re in Lisbon and you want to try they best pastel de natas GOHERE! Also do try their cappuccinos so worth it! … Now I’m craving them … &*$#%^ UGH

I’m torn. I’m on the fence. 4 or 5 stars? I just had Pasteis de Belem yesterday. I tried these natas today and they were really good. Did I want to eat 4 like I did yesterday? No. I think these ones are slightly sweeter so as I write this, I’m giving these natas a solid 4 stars. Belem is kind of far too. To get a fresh natas fix in the city centre, eat these. Wait for the bell to ring to indicate a fresh batch!

«Give me a life time of promises and a world of dreams. Speak the language of love like you know what it means.» Simply the best! Make a point to get a Pastéis de Nata from Manteigaria… or two or three. We tried Pastéis de Natas from numerous places in Lisboa/Portugal and Manteigaria’s are in a class of their own. Manteigaria is not the oldest… it’s not the original… it’s not the royal version, but it is fundamentally proper and absolutely delicious! If you somehow aren’t familiar with Pastéis de Natas, but find yourself in Lisboa make a cultural point to eat this traditional item. Essentially you have a tart of crèm brûlée with a crust of layers of puff pastry baked with pounded butter in between them for a wonderfully buttery, crunchy crust. An absolute steal at one euro each!

This is a place that takes culture, service and quality and offers you something delicious. Concept is a bit take to go and there is a line. But don’t worry, the staff is not rushing you. You can take as much pasteis as you want and even coffee. They offer a place to sit by bar to eat and drink your coffee. The pasteis was the best I had in Lisbon. It seemed they really added the extra grams and they are very filling. It tastes so much better when it’s warm. The lady serving us was very friendly and guaranteed they are open till midnight if we want to come back for more. If you’re passing by just go in to grab 2 and a coffee. You will not be disappointed but perhaps become addicted and come back for more.

NONNONNON… CANON !!!

Yummy!!! My favorite place for pastel de nata in Lisbon! And soon to be yours :) Portuguese love their sweets, egg filled custardy sweets to be exact. And the most popular, the most addicted one of them all? Pasteias de Nata aka Pastel de nata aka the egg custard. Now don’t get it twisted. You can’t compare this so ANY other custards unless you’ve been to Portugal, or have tried the portugese version. It is flaky, fluffy, crispy, custardy! It is perfect in every way and you will know this as soon as it hit your lips. This place? This place in my opinion make the best one of them all in Lisbon. All the shops closed early for bakery/baked goods in this area. it’s the triangle that meets Principe Reale, Barrio Alto and all that. But not this shop. They open later than most other places on this strip. The décor is simple and oh so pretty. It’s bright, charming! You can see the bakers baking all them little goodies as you walk in through the glass. I guess they want to protect their custards from getting drooled on :) I don’t blame them. And the best part??! You can get 6 of these cuties for 5 euros! Comes in a pretty box. In my case, boxes. I bought 4 boxes total to bring back home to the states. Somehow only one made it through that treacherous plane right teeheee! Can’t blame a girl for chowing these down. You’d be doing the same. Oh and I’m really not into sweets. I hate sugary taste of most things. I don’t do cakes, desserts 90% of the time. These are semi sweet, crispy perfection. Now I just need to figure out how to get more of these babies into the states cause I ran out! Anyone? Anyone??? In short~ try it! Get addicted. Join the club! And perhaps bring me some too. Yes? It’s a win-win for all :)
