Tatty’s Designer Recycle

I like a good rummage through Tattys, I just really like the idea of recycled clothing .
Although I felt like sizing could be a hit and miss at this store, but recycled clothing stores are like a lucky dip you just don’t know what you’re going to get .
Awesome selection of bags and scarves. I spotted some cool shoes .
Always worth a look I think.

Went to Tatty’s recently and walked out with a olive green knit for less than $ 10! Most of the price tags were high, however there was also a considerable amount that had been reduced… maybe I hit a sale?! I liked the layout, including a large section for men out the back all to themselves. Second hand mens wear is not so easy to come by, and especially cool, unique, well made classics. The prices at Tatty’s are higher than your average second hand store because the majority of the clothes on offer are designer gear. Another second hand clothing store just a skip and jump nearby had the same prices but with less quality on offer, this was confirmed by my visit to both stores on the same day last week.

You won’t be able to afford this, you won’t enjoy the staff or music, or even sometimes the clothes as they take any good brand from any bad season.
On the plus side, there is sometimes a cute dog wondering around, so that’s good I suppose.

Tatty’s is a very ‘Auckland’ op shop. By that I mean that it is expensive, even though people have worn these clothes before. The thing is, there are heaps of cool things here, things that would have had huuuggeee price tags just a couple of wears ago.
Situated on Ponsonby Road, it is surrounded by designer stores, but all credit to Tatty’s — it definitely stands it’s ground. If you’ve ever visited New Zealand designer stores and felt angry at your bank account because it doesn’t quite visit Tatty’s and you might find what you’re looking for.
There are dresses, pants, skirts, shirts, t shirts, shoes and more. The store is laid out in a very chic eclectic way which perfectly matches the mishmash of stuff you’ll find there.
The girls that work there are all very friendly and have that boho chic look down to a fine art.
A cool place, but I still find it hard to get my head around paying quite a bit for something second hand.

Tatty’s is on the expensive end of secondhand clothing stores. It is in Ponsonby so I guess that’s what you expect, also, a lot of the stuff is designer so there’s that. The range is pretty good — it’s high end secondhand, if that makes sense. You’re bound to find something you like, but I’m not sure if you’re bound to like the price.
On the other end, the selling process is pretty easy. You take in your things, they keep what they want and you pick up the rest (or leave it there to give to charity). A few weeks later you can check to see if anything you have is sold. NOTE: IF YOU LOSE YOUR GREEN SLIP YOU ARE SCREWED. YOU WILL NOT BE GETTING YOUR ITEMS OR YOUR MONEY BACK. AT ALL. Same if you don’t pick up the things that aren’t sold by the date on your green slip — they keep it and they’re strict on that rule so make sure you set five alarms for that closing date. They give you half minus gst, of what they sell your item for, which sometimes doesn’t seem like much, but for people who can’t be bothered deal with the hassle of TradeMe or people in general, it’s good.

Tatty’s is one of the better secondhand stores in the city, with two locations — one on High St and the other (original) store on Ponsonby Road. The Ponsonby Tatty’s is where it’s at; it has a great selection of women’s, men’s and kid’s fashion — and I love the window art!
Tatty’s doesn’t bother accepting any clothes that aren’t in good quality, so you never have to worry about wading through crappy ripped or stained garments. The reverse side of this however is that although secondhand, a lot of the clothes, accessories and shoes that Tatty’s stock is designer and it can therefore still be quite pricey.
The staff that work in both of the Tatty’s stores and young and funky — they all have great senses of style and encourage you to try outfits and accessories you may otherwise leave alone. I love this about my Tatty’s experiences — you never know what unique and eclectic pieces you’ll walk out with!
Tip: At the start of each season Tatty’s looks for new items to sell so get your A into G and take the funky clothes you no longer wear along to a Tatty’s store and you could make some serious money off them!

While the general idea of secondhand clothing doesn’t really appeal to me (just think about who has died in that ‘vintage’ blazer you are about to purchase) while the secondhand clothing shopping experience brings to mind the smell of mothballs and unwashed old people, it is a whole different experience at Tatty’s.
Whether your on the long road to your next payday or you are a second hand shopping freak of nature, this place will set your shopping nerves alight baby!
I am constantly finding little gems in this shop, why just the other day I found a Moochi turban for five buckaroos!
Granted the prices here are on the high side, it is called a secondhand ‘designer boutique’ people! what do you expect.
The stuff here is quality preloved gear that is getting a second chance at life.

Tatty’s was the first place I ever bought anything second hand, after cringing at the idea of wearing somebody else’s clothing I decided to get over myself and try it out. When I first stepped into Tatty’s I faced a crowd of fashionable women and giggled to myself thinking these are the women that walk around thinking they are top shit. This is where they shop.
Apart from that, the staff members were quite nice and friendly and let you get along with it. I browsed around the shop and was rather shocked at the price tags. I assumed that since it was second hand, it would be at a reasonable price but oh no you could find items up to $ 200.
I won’t lie although the price tag shocked me and I knew I could probably buy more things if I stepped into a retail shop. My best buy to date is a long black pleated skirt which I paid $ 36 for and that is only because it was brand new and still had at the tags. Apart from that I will happily browse at Tatty’s and only purchase items if they are new or if they form some kind of dollar rack.

So if you’ve been down at Karen Walker and sighed repeatedly at the gorgeousness that you can’t afford, you might try consoling yourself at Tatty’s.
It’s best not to think of Tatty’s as a secondhand clothing store, because you’ll get your hopes up as high as the prices! It’s certainly at the upper end of ‘preloved designer’, but still, everything is in extremely good nick and there’s lots of last-​season stock.
I think I prefer the other Tatty’s (on High Street) just because it doesn’t focus quite so much on the high-​end fashions, and therefore falls more within my price range.

Buying secondhand is a great way to save money, right? No. Not here it isn’t. I like looking at op shops because it satisfies the voyeuristic part of me as well as the super cheap part of me. Tattys doesn’t really satisfy either. Their clothes are very expensive (for secondhand clothes). At least to me they are. When I think of second hand clothes, I want to get my hands on something from the seventies that’d been tucked away in some old man’s chest of drawers for forty years. I don’t want to leaf through last seasons designer pieces. If that’s even what they are. I don’t know to be honest. That just seems like a really great and bitchy thing to say. I just don’t like Tattys very much. I did buy my girlfriend a duffel coat from there once, and she was pretty, pretty, pretty happy. So two stars for that.
