Stepping down into this cave-​like boutique is like stepping back in time to my childhood. Everything has been so carefully selected and it evokes Kiwiana circa 70s so incredibly well; you just walk around going «I remember that!» at every second object.
Tin lunch boxes, the Game of Life, helmet hairdryers and more. The furniture and homewares are my favourite things down here but there’s a lot of cool clothes too.
Last time I visited I scored myself a couple of cool retro pieces of art for my walls and if you want a specific item of memorabilia, there’s a chance you just might find it here. The prices are great although they know their stuff and you pay more for the rare items.
Check it out and relive your youth, or if you’re too young to remember come and get a small taste of what New Zealand was like before disposable imports took over.

I had been living on, and walking down K’Rd for two Uni semesters and I had no idea that this place even existed. Seriously, put a sign on the roadside of your shop. Cool fun to browse around. Most of their stuff is probably to groovy for me to wear on a day to day basis, but full respect to people who are still rocking full hippy Monday to Friday. Yea, I’m probably to much of a square to come here other than if I was on my way to a costume dress party, but there are some totally ligit hippies shopping here.

Fuzzy Vibes is one of the many second hand clothing boutiques nestled amongst the filth and the fury of Karangahape road. Once you manage to negotiate your way down the extravagantly steep set of stair that mark the entrance, you’ll find yourself in a kind of throwback utopia, loaded with vintage artifacts and items of clothing. They’ve chosen to specialise in fare from the 1960s and 70s, so expect to be bedazzled by their range of patterned shirts, flared trousers, retro sporting aparel, and brogues galore. The main problem I had with the place is that the pricing is a little extravagant, given a lot of the items present could just as easily be picked out of your grandpa’s closet. I like to look at Fuzzy Vibes, but don’t really ever consider buying something.

I sometimes wonder how Fuzzy Vibes stays afloat — despite its cute look and huge range of clothing, it has pretty much no road frontage on a street where not having a street presence is the kiss of death. And yet, Fuzzy Vibes has remained open for a number of years, selling top quality vintage and retro clothes and homewares to Auckland’s masses. (I suspect this place has remained afloat thanks to selling a huge array of men’s printed shirts that I see on hipsters all over Auckland.) I still have some of the vintage containers I bought at Fuzzy a number of years ago — they were in such good nick that they’ll be good for years yet, too.

You need to be an independent shopper to get the most out of Fuzzy Vibes Junction. For a start, you have to be onto it enough to spot the entrance (it’s easy to walk past!), although it helps that what there is of it is psychedelic. Then, once you venture down the stairs to the lair that is Fuzzy Vibes, you won’t get any assistance from the staff. Can be a great thing or a terrible thing, depending on the kind of shopper you are and the kind of day you’re having.
But don’t let me put you off, Fuzzy Vibes has a solid range of 1960s and 1970s gear, including shoes, bags, and wigs, and if it’s something really groovy you’re after (read: fancy dress) the range here is second to none in central Auckland.
